I live in rural Arkansas and joined a CSA last spring. I wish I bought this book sooner! It is well written and the recipes I've tried so far have all worked well. Some recipes will take major planning since the ingredients are not readily available, Gruyere cheese, for example, is 40 miles away. Same goes for Kalamata olives. I am not from this area and my weekly bags of mystery greens would have between more easily handled if I'd bought this book earlier. I only wish this book had photos of the various greens because I spent a lot of time on Google!
I have been eating locally for two years and as a result, I have amassed several very good local-food cookbooks, including this one among Local Flavors, Southern Farmers Market Cookbook, and The Old Farmer's Garden-Fresh Cookbook Almanac. I keep returning to The New Southern Garden Cookbook because it's exceptionally easy to use; recipes are arranged by specific ingredient, unlike the other cookbooks in my collection. One must merely assess what produce she has and then flip to the ingredient sections to find appropriate recipes.Though this cookbook is rather sparse in photos and art compared to similar cookbooks (e.g. Local Flavors, especially), author Sheri Castle more than makes up for this deficiency with witty, humor-infused prose, as well as fascinating histories of the ingredients, which precede each section. The field peas introduction, for example, is quite compelling, outlining the history of field peas from Africa with colorful names like calico crowder, Sea Island Red, purple-hull, zipper, etc. Long story short: if you love local food, this cookbook belongs on your shelf, even if you don't live in the South.

I love this cookbook because it features VEGETABLES! And each vegetable is in it's own section. Sheri is a talented and prolific cookbook writer. She came to visit my Clemmons Cooking Club, and I've seen her byline in numerous magazine articles.
This book is a wealth of information and inspiration, the recipes both creative and straightforward. An example from the chapter on blackberries -- blackberry BBQ sauce, blackberry and buttermilk sherbet, blackberry and oatmeal breakfast brûlée ... Yes, please! The writing is terrific, too -- e.g., on the unsuitability of an ingredient: "...skim milk is puny, meager and inadequate." Very helpfully organized by ingredient, although right now I am reading cover to cover . One last note: Despite the title, almost all ingredients should be easily accessible almost anywhere in the U.S.
I am always looking for different ways to fix vegetables. This cookbook is a great addition to my collection. The recipes are just different enough that you don't feel like you've "been there,done that". Also, most are not difficult and are easy to put on the table quickly. I'm enjoying this immensely!
First, the recipes are wonderful and quite doable. The author uses fresh, seasonal ingredients in lots of different ways--always with great results. This is my first year participating in a CSA, and this book has helped me learn what to do with produce I was previously unfamiliar with. The real beauty of this book, however, lies in the anecdotes and descriptions included with virtually every recipe. This is a cookbook that reads more like a humorous Southern novel!
