Review

“This is a masterful collection of innovative yet accessible recipes that will get you eating a healing diet without even a second of missing out on flavor!”―Sarah Ballantyne, PhD, New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Approach and The Paleo Approach Cookbook“If you serve Rachael Bryant’s flavor-packed dishes to your family, no one will suspect that these autoimmune-friendly dishes are missing anything. In fact, I bet they’ll demand seconds and thirds!”―Michelle Tam, New York Times bestselling author of Nom Nom Paleo: Food For Humans“Rachael has created a suite of delicious, creative, healthful, gorgeously-photographed recipes that appeal to any palate.”―Liz Wolfe, NTP, author of Eat The Yolks“I wish I’d had this cookbook when I did my own 3-month AIP experiment. It would have made the experience entirely more delicious. Rachael’s creative recipes put tangy flavors (like BBQ Sauce) and creamy textures (hello, gravy!) back on the menu. This cookbook is a welcome treat for anyone following the AIP.”―Melissa Joulwan, author of Well Fed: Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat and Well Fed 2: More Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat

This is by far the best AIP cookbook we have tried. I'm 19, and my older sisters and I cook out of it nearly every day. The recipes are as flavorful, and sometimes even more interesting to cook, than regular paleo. Rachael Bryant did a fine job of making creative, gourmet, AIP friendly foods that I wouldn't hesitate to serve to non-paleo friends. Who would think that you could make a delicious chili without tomatoes, beans and the regular nightshade spices? Rachael Bryant did, and our whole family thinks it is the best chili we've ever had. This book is worth having, even if you don't eat AIP or paleo. It uses so many different spices and seasonings, that it will pleasantly vary the way you eat and you will never miss grains or nightshades or seed spices or eggs or dairy or nuts. Some of the spices can be a challenge to find, but it is well worth the effort to search for them. The BBQ Sauce is the best AIP version that we have tried. The Taco Spice Seasoning has enabled me to make the whole family plain old everyday meat tacos. These flavorings are long unsung, but we have all benefited from expanding our palates. The Rosemary Flatbread is also a hit. From the Mama, who is the reason we are eating AIP: Do treat yourself to a copy of this book. It is a creative and flavorful work of art. My children cook from it several times a week, and we have never yet been disappointed. We have our dinner foods at breakfast time, and it is a boon for the entire family that the children can open a paleo cookbook and simply follow the recipe, no substitutions required. My favorites: Cuban Picadillo, Chicken "Curry" (even better day old and cold), No-nightshade Salsa, Cod with Berry Salsa. One of the difficulties of autoimmune disease is a less than robust appetite. These recipes have tempted me back to the table, and now I can enjoy my meal instead of just enduring it for my health's sake. And I forgot to mention the Artichoke Dip....delicious as a pizza sauce. My younger teens also eat heartily from these recipes. Not quite as important as the quality of the recipes is the fact that the author is not overly chatty or too cute by half. The photos are accurate and helpful. My children have long been competent cooks; Nourish has made them downright inspired.I have been able to find the stranger ingredients on Amazon (dried shrimp), Mountain Rose Herbs online (mace, turmeric, and every other organic herb and spice and tea) and Thrive Market online (ume plum vinegar and fish sauce and coconut aminos).

I have now purchased several AIP based paleo cookbooks, including Mickey Trescott's, Sara Ballantyne's Healing Kitchen and now this one. This one is by far my favorite. The recipes are actually tasty while being AIP compliant which is a tough mix to find with all the restrictions. If you are a foodie you will appreciate this book. The first recipe I tried were the ribs and they were fantastic. I didn’t think it would be possible to replicate my favorite rib recipe without any seed or nightshade spices but it was! Everything I’ve made from the book so far has turned out great and tasted delicious which hasn’t been my experience with all the AIP cookbooks. If you are looking for an AIP cookbook this one should be your first stop. Rachael has a natural ability with recipes.Yes it does have a few 'weird' ingredients but if you are used to Paleo cookbooks then you should be used to sourcing 'weird' ingredients. I will be the first to admit it might be difficult if you live in a small town ((like me) with no Whole foods but hey that's what Amazon is for and you are already here!I love that each recipe has a well lit picture to go with it. Essential in a cookbook IMO and I also like the way the recipes are organized.

As a chef doing AIP due to Hashimoto's diagnosis (Autoimmune protocol) I was challenged, having to adapt my recipes with new ingredients. Rachel Bryant made the transition beyond easy! The recipes in the book are delicious. And, she has inspired me to substitute my "regular" ingredients, like cooking oils, heavy cream, eggs, etc., for ingredients suggested in the recipes, such as avocado and coconut oils, coconut milk and gelatin. The finished dishes are amazingly delicious, easy to prepare, even my husband is enjoying my new way of cooking. I am truly "Nourished", have never felt more healthful and energetic.

In my cookbook collection there are over 100 books. After my Hashimoto diagnosis I added a number of Paleo and AIP cookbooks. I was often disappointed to find that the authors used ingredients in many recipes that were not part of my diet such that it was necessary to go through and remove those not related to AIP especially. This cookbook stays true to the diet while offering a wide range of familiar, multicultural, and enticing recipes with often new and different ingredients . Of all my cookbooks I would consider this one #1. I appreciate the many photos in color, the easy to follow recipes and the health conscious discipline of the author. There is one suggestion I would offer. AIP does not include wine because it is made with sweetness of grapes and does not include liquor because most are made from grains or potatoes etc. However tequila is made from a plant. A modified Margarita can be made with tequila over ice, fresh lime juice and a small amount of orange juice. My toast to to Rachael Bryant.

You will LOVE this book. The recipes are easy to follow and include lots of pics of what the finished recipe looks like. It offers a variety of different recipes so if you feel like you are missing out on something by following an AIP you will find a great substitute here. I follow the author on Instagram and enjoy the recipes she posts there and enjoy supporting people I love--it's been a long time since I ordered a cook book but I am really glad I did. I have already shared some of the recipes that I have tried with friends to enjoy as well. The book itself is organized well and made of good quality.I would recommend this to anyone even if you are not AIP.

my wife had me order this book and loved it so much i read it also i`m not into skating like she is but i enjoyed it also

Thank you! It made me think of my forgotten dreams. Should remind them for myself.

I enjoyed this little book quite a bit.Hardy uses the gender roles we associate with figure skating and hockey to explore what it is to be brave when you are learning to be an adult. Who are your friends, and what does fitting it cost you? What is it like to fall in love with something you feel ashamed of?One of the strongest parts of the writing in this book is the love of skating that comes through. Ben is an awesome kid. He works hard for the things he wants to do, and he doesn't whine about the fact that it's work. So all the time he spends on the ice comes through clearly, and he seems like a great role model for other kids.I really appreciated the family dynamics that the story presents. The parents are supportive, but they also want respect and effort from the kids. For instance, the kids have to mow lawns or babysit to earn half the money for their camps and equipment. That's a nice balance of supportive with wanting the kid to have some skin in the game. And I'm glad his sister wanted to play hockey. That was a nice contrast.I chuckled pretty hard when Ben found out how much a pair of figure-skating boots costs. I have figure skaters of my own, and it's no joke. Also, in my head, Grandma teaches Ben to sew his own foofy costumes, and it's a nice bonding activity. But that may be my prejudice since I sewed all my kids' costumes. However, I think this book is pretty firmly in the mid-grade camp. Although Ben learns to explore his own prejudices about masculinity, gayness, and figure skating, it seemed like he had very little understanding of why the three of those are not necessarily in conflict. I thought the addition of questioning his sexuality actually distracted from the contemplation of masculinity, like it was too many axes to handle in the story. I wanted Ben to think about what it was that caused his peers and himself to recoil from things that challenged their assumptions. I thought that his definition of masculinity (and femininity didn't really move, just got a bit bigger to account for himself and his sister as exceptional.Still, I would recommend it as a nice starting place to talk about gender roles and also the value of hard work in sports.Read if: You love ice skating in any form. You were a student athlete. You wish you had gotten to play the "wrong" sport for your gender.Skip if: You are looking for a more advanced treatment of gender politics. Also read:Dairy Queen, a more nuanced and mature look at gender roles and sexuality and hard work. However, Dairy Queen is certainly for older readers than Crossovers.

Thirteen year old Ben Bradley loves to be on the ice. His whole family plays hockey - even his older sister and mom. He's a good hockey player too.But what he really wants to do is learn to jump and spin. He's been going to the ice arena early in the morning watching Shannon and taking lessons from Mr. B. Ben is careful to be finished by eight when the hockey practice starts. If the guys saw him figure skating, well, they'd make fun of him.As if life wasn't complicated enough for Ben, his sister wants to go to hockey camp. Hockey camp -with the guys! And she wants to try out for the varsity hockey team. The guys will never let him live that down. And his parents. How will he ever tell his hockey playing parents he wants to dance on the ice?Hardy has crafted a youth novel dealing with many of the issues facing young people today. Ben wants to be accepted by the guys but is it worth it to not follow his heart?Ben's sister wants to be on the hockey team. Should she try for it even though she is convinced she would have to be twice as good as a guy? Ben wants to support his sister but does that mean fighting the bullies who make fun of her? When Ben's bicycle is trashed, has his best friend betrayed him?Should Ben be nice to Norman Skagway? Skag is a nice kid but the guys call him a name that rhymes with his nickname. What will the guys think if Ben is seen with Skag?Is Ben lying to his parents when he does not tell them about his dreams or his early morning practices at the arena? Is lying just with words or do you do it with your actions too? This is a great novel for kids 10 to 13 years old. A good Discussion Guide helps readers discuss fears, peer pressure, lying, the roles girls and boys are expected to follow, being true to your faith and being accepted by your peers, and more. This would be a good novel for parents too. You will get a pretty good idea of what your kids are going through in middle school and early high school.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author for the purpose of this review.

What a fun little book! By "little" I simply mean short, weighing in at 134 pages. By "fun" I mean exactly that. Hardy has written this book for early to mid-teens and even though I've forgotten a great deal about being a teenager (I'm now 54), I felt she had captured their world quite well. Her description of emotions, mood swings, thoughts focus on peer pressure, joys & frustrations with parents: they're all here.I had to 'fight' my wife, Ann, over reading this book. I was in the middle of two other book review reads and she was out of something to read, so I handed her LeAnne's book and away she went. I think Ann was drawn more to Denise's character and I was obviously drawn to Ben.Hardy does a good job at incorporating faith into her storyline. I found it very believable, for with the exception of the most devout teens, Ben's faith was young, yet growing. Having grown up in rural Iowa and being very familiar with small town life, the author does a fabulous job of working that flavor into the fabric of the plot also. This is a book I can highly recommend. If parents of teens are wondering what to get their kids for Christmas, this would be a good starter. There are also a few discussion questions in the back which can be used to draw out a young reader's thoughts on the book.

Double Luck: Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan

From Publishers Weekly

Currently the owner of a restaurant in California, Lu looks back on a life that reflects China's tumultuous recent history, from wars and famine to Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution. Orphaned at three, Chi Fa grows up amid hardships that will be scarcely imaginable to American readers. "Chi Fa, you are lucky. Good fortune will find you," his beloved Sister tells him when, yielding to her husband, she abandons him on another sibling's doorstep. The boy is shunted among his relatives, sold to strangers and eventually rescued from them by Sister; he is beaten, starved and forced to beg. At 12, he survives a dangerous trek to freedom in Hong Kong, where an elderly man to whom he gives food fuels his dreams of emigrating to America ("In America people eat three times a day. In America they are too full to swallow sorrow"), a dream he finally realizes at 20. The first-person narrative is pedestrian and even plodding in parts ("An important thing I forgot to mention is China's class system"), but readers who are not put off by the prose will be impressed by Chi Fa's perseverance, intelligence and goodness of heart. From School Library Journal

Grade 5-10-The power of positive thinking is amply demonstrated in this moving memoir. Born in the turmoil of the Sino-Japanese war in China's Jiangsu province and orphaned at age three, young Chi Fa ("new beginning") had more new beginnings than any child should have to face. He was passed from relative to relative and finally sold to a Communist village chief who treated him badly. Rescued by his sister 18 months later, he was returned to his unwelcoming relatives. At nine years old, he was the caretaker for a mute epileptic and then sent to Shanghai to join the brother and the family who had first sold him. In time, they ended up in Kowloon, where, for nearly three years, Chi Fa supported them by begging, until an aunt arranged for them all to migrate to Taiwan. For the first time in his life, at 13, he went to school, but after a year, he was pulled out to work. He contributed to that family until he was conscripted into the Taiwanese army. In 1969, he immigrated to the United States, following a dream he had had for 14 years. The strength of this book is in the clarity of Chi Fa's personal story, his optimism and determination in the face of incredible adversity. The grinding poverty of daily life in China is clear. Less trustworthy is his understanding of geography and politics of the world beyond his family. Such errors make this touching story somewhat less convincing.Kathleen Isaacs, Edmund Burke School, Washington, DC Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This was one of the most wonderful books I've ever read. I could hardly put it down. Your heart breaks as you read about a little boy who was so mistreated, but in the midst of all that, having a sister who did all she could to encourage him and to keep him hopeful for his future. Along the way there were those who brutalized him and then there were those who were sent from heaven to help him.Interwoven in the story is Chinese wisdom and ways of thinking that are so different from our western mindsets. I met this wonderful gentleman at his restaurant this past August and I recommend it to all. It is The Coffee Pot in Morro Bay, Ca.

I loved this book. It told of the courage and perseverance of a young boy in an impossible situation. Very uplifting, heart warming and positive. I would recommend this book to adults as well as children.

I met author on a trip to Asia and he told me the story. It is a good read.

Book was excellent. We were able to also meet the author, who owns a restaurant in Morro Bay, and signed the book for us

Great story for choosing your own attitude and resilience.

Great book! Great condition and got to meet the author himself at the college and got it signed. Wonderful experience and satisfied with the service.

One of the best books I have ever read

my mom recommended it and my whole family has read it. Very entertaining and a great reminder of things. tear jerker

Amazon.com Review

Aimed at Web developers with some previous Java experience, Java Servlet Programming, Second Edition, offers a solid introduction to the world of Java development with Servlets and related technologies. Thoroughly revised and newly updated with over a half-dozen new chapters, this title brings an already useful text up to speed with some leading-edge material. It excels particularly in explaining how to program dynamic Web content using Java Servlets, with a fine introduction to all the APIs, programming techniques, and tips you will need to be successful with this standard. Besides a useful guide to APIs, the book looks at a variety of techniques for saving session state, as well as showing how Servlets can work together to power Web sites. You will learn performance tips and ways to get Servlets to work together (like forwarding and redirection), plus the basics of database programming with JDBC, to build content with "live" data. A later chapter examines what's next for Servlets with the emerging Servlet 2.3 API standard. Importantly, the authors go over deploying and configuring Web applications by editing XML files, a must-have for successfully running Servlets in real applications. Since the first edition of this title, the choices for Java Web developers have grown much richer. Many of the new chapters in this edition look at options beyond Servlets. Short sections on application frameworks such as Tea, WebMacro, the Element Construction Set (ECS), XMLC, and JavaServer Pages (JSP) let you explore what's out there for Java developers today with a survey of some current tools that can speed up creating new Web applications. The text closes with reference sections on Servlet APIs (and other material) that will be useful for any working developer. Although Servlets are not the only game in town, they are still important tools for successful Web development. This updated edition shows you just how to do it with plenty of basic and advanced tips for taking full advantage of this powerful Java standard. --Richard Dragan Topics covered: Overview and history of Java Servlets Fundamentals of HTTP Web applications (including deployment and configuration using XML files) The Servlet lifecycle (initializing, processing requests, cleanup, and caching) Multimedia content (images and compressed content) WAP and WML for wireless content Servlet session tracking techniques (hidden form fields, cookies, and URL rewriting) Security issues with Servlets (including certificates and SSL) Tutorial for JDBC and Java database programming Using applets and Servlets together Servlet collaboration Quick introduction to Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) Internationalization issues Survey of third-party Servlet application frameworks and tools: Tea, WebMacro, the Element Contruction Set (ECS), XMLC, and JavaServer Pages (JSP) Miscellaneous tips for Servlets (including sending e-mail and using regular expressions) Description of the new Servlet 2.3 API spec Servlet API quick reference

We have a half dozen books on servlets lying around the office, and I've also read the online tutorial from Sun. Nothing compares in breadth, depth, or clarity to Hunter and Crawford's "Java Servlet Programming".Luckily, the second edition does not tinker with the tried and true formula of the first: brief overview, hello world servlet, a thorough overview of the HTTP protocol itself and the architecture of servlets, a discussion of thread and resource issues, and a standalone chapter on session management. Despite the 700+ pages of this book (are authors paid by the pound these days?), this core introduction remains only 200 pages and change. Each topic is presented with definitions and clear, yet realistic code examples. The authors not only provide advice on how to use servlets effectively, but also provide numerous suggestions on how to avoid common pitfalls and misconceptions. The remaining 500 pages cover topics such as security, internationalization, database connectivity and communicating with applets. Although these are not really servlet-specific issues, they are almost always present in some combination on web sites, and the authors indicate the peculiar way in which the standard Java approaches to these problems interact with the servlet architecture. Each is presented in its own clear chapter with several examples. The beauty of these chapters is that like good code, they're modular and can be read in any order. In what I think is a sensible organization, Java Server Pages (JSPs) and "application frameworks" are left for last. Both are well defined and illustrated. There's also 50 pages of reference, but frankly, I prefer the javadoc.

This is one of the best books for learning Java Servlets. Itprovides the reader with clear examples and throughout explanations ofthe Servlet API v2.0. The topics discussed in this book reflectsituations that might surface in the real world. The only problemthat arises with this book is that the Servlet API is now in version2.2 with version 2.3 really close to being available to the public. Therefore some of the methods and/or classes presented here aredeprecated and were replaced or eliminated in the latter versions. Anexample of this is class javax.servlet.http.HttpSessionContext Iread at the author's site...that he's releasing a new edition soonwith updated information. I throughly recommend this book even ifyou are using a newer version of the API, since the core servlettechnology hasn't changed much. If you want to learn servlets justfor acquiring the knowledge, you might want to wait for the secondedition. Otherwise get this book to get on the fast track into thisexciting technology.

that have been plaguing the online servlet interest group for months. In addition to covering all the topics of the first session, Jason (Will Crawford did not contribute to this edition) brings the content nearly up-to-date with all the dizzying array of developments in the servlet API, Tomcat , and the Web Applications Framework that have taken place since publication of the first edition (October 1998).In particular, he illuminates the dark recesses of XML deployment descriptors, Tomcat 3.2, J2EE, the Tea and WebMacro frameworks WAP, XMLC and the changes from JSDK 1.0 to 2.2. Every topic is accompanied by working code snippets and often the code builds on itself so the would-be servlet programmer can participate in the development of complex applications from simple beginnings. I say "nearly up-to-date" because Tomcat 4.0 beta, incorporating JSDK 2.3 has been released, but to Jason's credit, he devotes an entire chapter on 2.3! This is about as current as hardcopy gets these days!My copy of the first edition is falling apart from constant use as a reference and already my copy of the 2d Edition is showing signs of wear. I could not recommend this book highly enough. If more people bought and read it, my email from the servlet interest group would no doubt decrease by an order of magnitiude!April 25, 2001

Jason Hunter has an excellent writing style that really helped me understand what servlets are and how they work. The information is presented in a way that I can work with for developing solutions quickly. I especially like the say Jason Hunter de-mystifies this particular Web technology. Great job! Hope to see another way on EJB or XML soon!!

OK

I am presently reading Java Servlet Programming...It is very informative and fun to read...Mr. Hunter should probably update the book since it is over 10 years old....however all the examples seem to work.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in programming in Java...however updating the book will be very beneficialto the author (more people will buy the book) and to the Java coounity.Valent Vella

I never knew anything about servlet programming this book just jump started me to write server side programme. One of the best book in servlets. Good examples the authors are thorough in every aspect. Its my Bible for Servlet and JSP programming.

Chapter 4: Invent Options for Mutual Gain The case of Israel and Egypt negotiating over who should keep how much of the Sinai Peninsula illustrates both a major problem in negotiation and a key opportunity. the pie that leaves both parties satisfied. Often you are negotiating along a single dimension, such as the amount of territory, the price of a car, the length of a lease on an apartment, or the size of a commission on a sale. At other times you face what appears to be an either/or choice that is either markedly favorable to you or to the other side. In a divorce settlement, who gets the house? Who gets custody of the children? You may see the choice as one between winning and losing- and neither side will agree to lose. Even if you do win and get the car for $12,000, the lease for five years, or the house and kids, you have a sinking feeling that they will not let you forget it. Whatever the situation, your choices seem limited. option like a demilitarized Sinai can often make the difference between deadlock and agreement. One lawyer we know attributes his success directly to his ability to invent solutions advantageous to both his client and the other side. He expands the pie before dividing it. Skill at inventing options is one of the most useful assets a negotiator can have. Yet all too often negotiators end up like the proverbial children who quarreled over an orange. After they finally agreed to divide the orange in half, the first child took one half, ate the fruit, and threw away the peel, while the other threw away. the fruit and used the peel from the second half in baking a cake. All too often negotiators "leave money on the table" - they fail to reach agreement when they might have, or the agreement they do reach could have been better for each side. Too many negotiations end up with half an orange for each side instead of the whole fruit for one and the whole peel for the other. Why? DIAGNOSIS As valuable as it is to have many options, people involved in a negotiation rarely sense a need for them. In a dispute, people usually believe that they know the right answer - their view should prevail. In a contract negotiation they are equally likely to believe that their offer is reasonable and should be adopted, perhaps with some adjustment in the price. All available answers appear to lie along a straight line between their position and yours. Often the only creative thinking shown is to suggest splitting the difference. inventing of an abundance of options: (1) premature judgment; (2) searching for the single answer; (3) the assumption of a fixed pie; and (4) thinking that "solving their problem is their problem." In order to overcome these constraints, you need to understand them. Premature judgment Inventing options does not come naturally. Not inventing is the normal state of affairs, even when you are outside a stressful negotiation. If you were asked to name the one person in the world most deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize, any answer you might start to propose would immediately encounter your reservations and doubts. How could you be sure that that person was the most deserving? Your mind might well go blank, or you might throw out a few answers that would reflect conventional thinking: "Well, maybe the Pope, or the President." pounce on the drawbacks of any new idea. Judgment hinders imagination. sense is likely to be sharper. Practical negotiation appears to call for practical thinking, not wild ideas. on the other side. Suppose you are negotiating with your boss over your salary for the coming year. You have asked for a $4,000 raise; your boss has offered you $1,500, a figure that you have indicated is unsatisfactory. In a tense situation like this you are not likely to start inventing imaginative solutions. You may fear that if you suggest some bright half-baked idea like taking half the increase in a raise and half in additional benefits, you might look foolish. Your boss might say, "Be serious. You know better than that. It would upset company policy. I am surprised. that you even suggested it." If on the spur of the moment you invent a possible option of spreading out the raise over time, he may take it as an offer: "I'm prepared to start negotiating on that basis." Since he may take whatever you say as a commitment, you will think twice before saying anything. piece of information that will jeopardize your bargaining position. If you should suggest, for example, that the company help finance the house you are about to buy, your boss may conclude that you intend to stay and that you will in the end accept any raise in salary he is prepared to offer. Searching for the single answer In most people's minds, inventing simply is not part of the negotiating process. People see their job as narrowing the gap between positions, not broadening the options available. They tend to think, "We're having a hard enough time agreeing as it is. The last thing we need is a bunch of different ideas." Since the end product of negotiation is a single decision, they fear that freefloating discussion will only delay and confuse the process. the second is premature closure. By looking from the outset for the single best answer, you are likely to short-circuit a wiser decision-making process in which you select from a large number of possible answers. The assumption of a fixed pie A third explanation for why there may be so few good options on the table is that each side sees the situation as essentially either/or - either I get what is in dispute or you do. A negotiation often appears to be a "fixed-sum" game; $100 more for you on the price of a car means $100 less for me. Why bother to invent if all the options are obvious and I can satisfy you only at my own expense? Thinking that "solving their problem Is their problem" A final obstacle to inventing realistic options lies in each side's concern with only its own immediate interests. For a negotiator to reach an agreement that meets his own self-interest he needs to develop a solution which also appeals to the self-interest of the other. Yet emotional involvement on one side of an issue makes it difficult to achieve the detachment necessary to think up wise ways of meeting the interests of both sides: "We've got enough problems of our own; they can look after theirs." There also frequently exists a psychological reluctance to accord any legitimacy to the views of the other side; it seems disloyal to think up ways to satisfy them. Shortsighted self- concern thus leads a negotiator to develop only partisan positions, partisan arguments, and one-sided solutions....

Had to purchase this book for my negotiation class, while the information is quite technical and meticulous it provides great information and In depth information on how to reach your desired solution. While boring at times, generally provides interesting and well thought out examples. Highly worth the read for classes or for everyday life

The title of Fisher and Ury's book is Getting to Yes - Negotiating Agreement without Giving In. It's a case where the title clearly lays out what the book is about. In Getting to Yes the authors present, step by step, how to find your way to a win-win solution that helps meet your goals while at the same time preserving the relationship so that future negotiations also go smoothly. This book was the assigned textbook for a college course I took on negotiation, but it's one of those fairly rare cases where the material that's useful for a college course is also immensely useful for off-the-street people in a variety of situations. This book avoids complicated jargon and long, droning background chapters. Instead, it plunges into helpful information to assist people in negotiating for a new car, negotiating issues with their landlords, and all the many ways we all negotiate for our position throughout life.Negotiation isn't just for union leaders trying to avert a strike. All of us negotiate each day as we try to juggle our many roles. We negotiate with our co-workers over assignments. We negotiate with our family members over chores. In an ideal world all of those discussions would go quickly, smoothly, and with as little strife as possible.Getting to Yes provided numerous helpful examples which made their points more easy to understand. It is so true that people tend to remember stories where they might not remember dry text. When I think about this book I do remember several of the stories clearly, and those help to represent the points the authors were making. The stories help remind me to focus on the issues when negotiating and to look for objective standards to work with. The information presented is wonderful, and immediately useful in life.On the down side, this is a new version of older material. The authors chose to keep the initial book in its original form and then add on additional information at the end. I appreciate for historical reasons why they wanted to do that. However, from a fresh reader point of view, I feel they should present an integrated whole which most clearly presents the full information. The way the book is laid out currently, you have to go back and forth to find all information on a given topic. Also, the format is not laid out for easy reference. If they went more for a "dummies" style with an easy to scan layout, graphs and charts to quickly find and scan, and quick end-summaries, that would make this more useful as a reference book to keep on a shelf. Right now if I had an issue to handle it would be less than quick to grab the book and find the answer. I would have to wade through the book to figure out where to get the support I needed.Still, I do recommend that everyone read this book at least once, to build their skills in negotiation. It's something we all have to do!

I first read this in 1983, when my husband was in his first year of law school. I've remembered over the years and tried to apply some of the principles that i learned in my personal and professional life. I recently attended some professional (non-legal) training, and one of the facilitators was a lawyer who led a discussion about how to negotiate when there is disagreement. As he spoke, I recognized the principles as the same ones I'd read in Getting to Yes so long ago. At the end of his presentation, he referred to this book. I decided to buy a new copy and read it again. It has been updated, and the new material is a great addition. Still a very handy tool for personal or professional negotiation.

This book has been around for quite a while and is vaunted by many as THE book on negotiation. I, like many others, am unconvinced. If you have never negotiated anything in your life, this is the book for you. It's a great primer, but it's far from all-encompassing. The authors admit that it is not meant to cover everything, though. It teaches what's known as "principled negotiation," which is a non-adversarial style. It's particularly useful for business deals and personal conflicts, since it emphasizes mutual problem solving and de-emphasizes taking positions, thus allowing everyone to "win."On the other hand, anyone who has successfully negotiated even the most minor of deals (i.e. haggling), won't find this as useful. In order to be effective, you have to convince all parties to accept the premise of principled negotiation. If they don't the whole system falls apart. Furthermore, if you are in an adversarial proceeding (lawsuit, arbitration, etc.), this is fairly useless. In those proceedings, the other party either doesn't care whether you "win" or actively wants you to lose. If you come up against a manipulator, the practices in this book will prove to be more hindrance than help. I had to read this as part of a law school class. To put it mildly, other aspects of the class were far more useful than this book.Bottom Line: a good starting point. Just don't make it a stopping point.

The book has opened a world of opportunities that I could not see before. It is practical. Everyone can benefit by reading it. The method that the authors describe can be used for any negotiations, from small to big: settling differences in views with your colleagues, talking to your family members, not giving in when a client asks you for an unjustified discount, when your house contractor doesn't want to do the proper job, managing a hostage crisis and even negotiating a nuclear arms deal with another, perhaps narrow minded country. I wish I have read this book 20 years ago. I would have handled many critical situations differently. I highly recommend this book for everyone to read. Moreover, if you have children who are ready to fly out or recently left your nest- make them read this book because it may change their lives, in a good way.

A must read. It helps with every day negotiations. It will save you a lot of emotional grief. It will help your marriage. It will help your work relationships. It helps your remove a lot of conflict in your life and a great stepping stone to peace of mind. I wish I had read it earlier in my life.
