This is one of the first banjo books that I bought years ago. It came with a record at that time. Records were pretty archaic then, but somehow I located a record player and I remember sitting and listening to banjo rolls, on the record, with amazement. It really helped to hear the syncopation played slowly.My old book fell apart years ago. The pages each fell out over time. So, I bought this one to look it over for old times sake, and to give to someone who comes along in the future wanting to play.YouTube is a great resource, but books like this still play an important part. If you want to learn, buy a few books. This one has simple and more complex versions of different songs. That's helpful.This would be one of the first books that I would recommend. Hohwald's "Banjo Primer" is another and Jack Hatfield's Banjo Method Book one is another.Bluegrass Banjo is an interesting book and has nice arrangements of familiar tunes.Banjo Primer has an excellent CD and DVD and breaks songs up into exercises. Hohwald's arrangements are simple but excellent. I learned many licks that I've used for years from his books.Hatfield's book highlights melody notes. That's awesome for a beginner. It has very simple tunes that sound good.The famous Earl Scruggs book is obviously recommended, but I would start with these three. You can make the songs from these three sound recognizable much faster.
Great book for those just beginning and intermediate players. Teaches you about posture and hand position, rolls and chords, how to write melody and fill in so that you will be improvising in no time. Easy to understand. Also includes tab for beginner, intermediate, and advanced players so that you don't "out grow" this book too soon. Recommended to me by my banjo teacher, who also used this book while learning. Wish I had known about it earlier.
An incredibly well written, well paced, and great beginner banjo book. Worth every penny. Actually much better than the Earl Scruggs beginning banjo book in its content and presentation. I have played the banjo for 34 years, and highly recommended this book. In all the books of Wernick and Trischka, you get clear, logical, and well paced banjo exercise and wisdom.
I have a couple of Pete's video courses, and have spent a good bit of time on his website. The man knows his stuff when it comes to banjo, and is a good teacher. This is a worthwhile book. One thing as mentioned by another reviewer is that the tabs are handwritten and the fret numbers are above the strings instead of on them as is now the custom. I bought my copy used for a few dollars and it did not have the cd or record with it which was not stated in the description. However, I mainly was buying it to add to my collection of banjo books as a reference so it was not a big deal.
One of the classic method books for bluegrass banjo, by one of it's classic players. Easy to follow progressive lessons, interspersed with plenty of tunes from the literature. This is one of the first banjo method books I used, and I had long since lost my original copy of it. I was pleased to be able to find a new copy for nearly the same price I paid originally.
This is a really detailed and thoughtfully put together book. I play guitar and just recently picked up the banjo. This has been very helpful. Appendices are really useful as well for banjo buying and setup.
Great book in great condition at a fraction of the price new.
This is the book I learned to play on. If you go through this book thoroughly and learn all of the techniques, you'll be a banjo picker! The CD is very helpful in hearing the rolls, and I'm not sure I could have learned with out it (was actually an acetate record in my first copy).
