Review

“This is a masterful collection of innovative yet accessible recipes that will get you eating a healing diet without even a second of missing out on flavor!”―Sarah Ballantyne, PhD, New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Approach and The Paleo Approach Cookbook“If you serve Rachael Bryant’s flavor-packed dishes to your family, no one will suspect that these autoimmune-friendly dishes are missing anything. In fact, I bet they’ll demand seconds and thirds!”―Michelle Tam, New York Times bestselling author of Nom Nom Paleo: Food For Humans“Rachael has created a suite of delicious, creative, healthful, gorgeously-photographed recipes that appeal to any palate.”―Liz Wolfe, NTP, author of Eat The Yolks“I wish I’d had this cookbook when I did my own 3-month AIP experiment. It would have made the experience entirely more delicious. Rachael’s creative recipes put tangy flavors (like BBQ Sauce) and creamy textures (hello, gravy!) back on the menu. This cookbook is a welcome treat for anyone following the AIP.”―Melissa Joulwan, author of Well Fed: Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat and Well Fed 2: More Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat

This is by far the best AIP cookbook we have tried. I'm 19, and my older sisters and I cook out of it nearly every day. The recipes are as flavorful, and sometimes even more interesting to cook, than regular paleo. Rachael Bryant did a fine job of making creative, gourmet, AIP friendly foods that I wouldn't hesitate to serve to non-paleo friends. Who would think that you could make a delicious chili without tomatoes, beans and the regular nightshade spices? Rachael Bryant did, and our whole family thinks it is the best chili we've ever had. This book is worth having, even if you don't eat AIP or paleo. It uses so many different spices and seasonings, that it will pleasantly vary the way you eat and you will never miss grains or nightshades or seed spices or eggs or dairy or nuts. Some of the spices can be a challenge to find, but it is well worth the effort to search for them. The BBQ Sauce is the best AIP version that we have tried. The Taco Spice Seasoning has enabled me to make the whole family plain old everyday meat tacos. These flavorings are long unsung, but we have all benefited from expanding our palates. The Rosemary Flatbread is also a hit. From the Mama, who is the reason we are eating AIP: Do treat yourself to a copy of this book. It is a creative and flavorful work of art. My children cook from it several times a week, and we have never yet been disappointed. We have our dinner foods at breakfast time, and it is a boon for the entire family that the children can open a paleo cookbook and simply follow the recipe, no substitutions required. My favorites: Cuban Picadillo, Chicken "Curry" (even better day old and cold), No-nightshade Salsa, Cod with Berry Salsa. One of the difficulties of autoimmune disease is a less than robust appetite. These recipes have tempted me back to the table, and now I can enjoy my meal instead of just enduring it for my health's sake. And I forgot to mention the Artichoke Dip....delicious as a pizza sauce. My younger teens also eat heartily from these recipes. Not quite as important as the quality of the recipes is the fact that the author is not overly chatty or too cute by half. The photos are accurate and helpful. My children have long been competent cooks; Nourish has made them downright inspired.I have been able to find the stranger ingredients on Amazon (dried shrimp), Mountain Rose Herbs online (mace, turmeric, and every other organic herb and spice and tea) and Thrive Market online (ume plum vinegar and fish sauce and coconut aminos).

I have now purchased several AIP based paleo cookbooks, including Mickey Trescott's, Sara Ballantyne's Healing Kitchen and now this one. This one is by far my favorite. The recipes are actually tasty while being AIP compliant which is a tough mix to find with all the restrictions. If you are a foodie you will appreciate this book. The first recipe I tried were the ribs and they were fantastic. I didn’t think it would be possible to replicate my favorite rib recipe without any seed or nightshade spices but it was! Everything I’ve made from the book so far has turned out great and tasted delicious which hasn’t been my experience with all the AIP cookbooks. If you are looking for an AIP cookbook this one should be your first stop. Rachael has a natural ability with recipes.Yes it does have a few 'weird' ingredients but if you are used to Paleo cookbooks then you should be used to sourcing 'weird' ingredients. I will be the first to admit it might be difficult if you live in a small town ((like me) with no Whole foods but hey that's what Amazon is for and you are already here!I love that each recipe has a well lit picture to go with it. Essential in a cookbook IMO and I also like the way the recipes are organized.

As a chef doing AIP due to Hashimoto's diagnosis (Autoimmune protocol) I was challenged, having to adapt my recipes with new ingredients. Rachel Bryant made the transition beyond easy! The recipes in the book are delicious. And, she has inspired me to substitute my "regular" ingredients, like cooking oils, heavy cream, eggs, etc., for ingredients suggested in the recipes, such as avocado and coconut oils, coconut milk and gelatin. The finished dishes are amazingly delicious, easy to prepare, even my husband is enjoying my new way of cooking. I am truly "Nourished", have never felt more healthful and energetic.

In my cookbook collection there are over 100 books. After my Hashimoto diagnosis I added a number of Paleo and AIP cookbooks. I was often disappointed to find that the authors used ingredients in many recipes that were not part of my diet such that it was necessary to go through and remove those not related to AIP especially. This cookbook stays true to the diet while offering a wide range of familiar, multicultural, and enticing recipes with often new and different ingredients . Of all my cookbooks I would consider this one #1. I appreciate the many photos in color, the easy to follow recipes and the health conscious discipline of the author. There is one suggestion I would offer. AIP does not include wine because it is made with sweetness of grapes and does not include liquor because most are made from grains or potatoes etc. However tequila is made from a plant. A modified Margarita can be made with tequila over ice, fresh lime juice and a small amount of orange juice. My toast to to Rachael Bryant.

You will LOVE this book. The recipes are easy to follow and include lots of pics of what the finished recipe looks like. It offers a variety of different recipes so if you feel like you are missing out on something by following an AIP you will find a great substitute here. I follow the author on Instagram and enjoy the recipes she posts there and enjoy supporting people I love--it's been a long time since I ordered a cook book but I am really glad I did. I have already shared some of the recipes that I have tried with friends to enjoy as well. The book itself is organized well and made of good quality.I would recommend this to anyone even if you are not AIP.

my wife had me order this book and loved it so much i read it also i`m not into skating like she is but i enjoyed it also

Thank you! It made me think of my forgotten dreams. Should remind them for myself.

I enjoyed this little book quite a bit.Hardy uses the gender roles we associate with figure skating and hockey to explore what it is to be brave when you are learning to be an adult. Who are your friends, and what does fitting it cost you? What is it like to fall in love with something you feel ashamed of?One of the strongest parts of the writing in this book is the love of skating that comes through. Ben is an awesome kid. He works hard for the things he wants to do, and he doesn't whine about the fact that it's work. So all the time he spends on the ice comes through clearly, and he seems like a great role model for other kids.I really appreciated the family dynamics that the story presents. The parents are supportive, but they also want respect and effort from the kids. For instance, the kids have to mow lawns or babysit to earn half the money for their camps and equipment. That's a nice balance of supportive with wanting the kid to have some skin in the game. And I'm glad his sister wanted to play hockey. That was a nice contrast.I chuckled pretty hard when Ben found out how much a pair of figure-skating boots costs. I have figure skaters of my own, and it's no joke. Also, in my head, Grandma teaches Ben to sew his own foofy costumes, and it's a nice bonding activity. But that may be my prejudice since I sewed all my kids' costumes. However, I think this book is pretty firmly in the mid-grade camp. Although Ben learns to explore his own prejudices about masculinity, gayness, and figure skating, it seemed like he had very little understanding of why the three of those are not necessarily in conflict. I thought the addition of questioning his sexuality actually distracted from the contemplation of masculinity, like it was too many axes to handle in the story. I wanted Ben to think about what it was that caused his peers and himself to recoil from things that challenged their assumptions. I thought that his definition of masculinity (and femininity didn't really move, just got a bit bigger to account for himself and his sister as exceptional.Still, I would recommend it as a nice starting place to talk about gender roles and also the value of hard work in sports.Read if: You love ice skating in any form. You were a student athlete. You wish you had gotten to play the "wrong" sport for your gender.Skip if: You are looking for a more advanced treatment of gender politics. Also read:Dairy Queen, a more nuanced and mature look at gender roles and sexuality and hard work. However, Dairy Queen is certainly for older readers than Crossovers.

Thirteen year old Ben Bradley loves to be on the ice. His whole family plays hockey - even his older sister and mom. He's a good hockey player too.But what he really wants to do is learn to jump and spin. He's been going to the ice arena early in the morning watching Shannon and taking lessons from Mr. B. Ben is careful to be finished by eight when the hockey practice starts. If the guys saw him figure skating, well, they'd make fun of him.As if life wasn't complicated enough for Ben, his sister wants to go to hockey camp. Hockey camp -with the guys! And she wants to try out for the varsity hockey team. The guys will never let him live that down. And his parents. How will he ever tell his hockey playing parents he wants to dance on the ice?Hardy has crafted a youth novel dealing with many of the issues facing young people today. Ben wants to be accepted by the guys but is it worth it to not follow his heart?Ben's sister wants to be on the hockey team. Should she try for it even though she is convinced she would have to be twice as good as a guy? Ben wants to support his sister but does that mean fighting the bullies who make fun of her? When Ben's bicycle is trashed, has his best friend betrayed him?Should Ben be nice to Norman Skagway? Skag is a nice kid but the guys call him a name that rhymes with his nickname. What will the guys think if Ben is seen with Skag?Is Ben lying to his parents when he does not tell them about his dreams or his early morning practices at the arena? Is lying just with words or do you do it with your actions too? This is a great novel for kids 10 to 13 years old. A good Discussion Guide helps readers discuss fears, peer pressure, lying, the roles girls and boys are expected to follow, being true to your faith and being accepted by your peers, and more. This would be a good novel for parents too. You will get a pretty good idea of what your kids are going through in middle school and early high school.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author for the purpose of this review.

What a fun little book! By "little" I simply mean short, weighing in at 134 pages. By "fun" I mean exactly that. Hardy has written this book for early to mid-teens and even though I've forgotten a great deal about being a teenager (I'm now 54), I felt she had captured their world quite well. Her description of emotions, mood swings, thoughts focus on peer pressure, joys & frustrations with parents: they're all here.I had to 'fight' my wife, Ann, over reading this book. I was in the middle of two other book review reads and she was out of something to read, so I handed her LeAnne's book and away she went. I think Ann was drawn more to Denise's character and I was obviously drawn to Ben.Hardy does a good job at incorporating faith into her storyline. I found it very believable, for with the exception of the most devout teens, Ben's faith was young, yet growing. Having grown up in rural Iowa and being very familiar with small town life, the author does a fabulous job of working that flavor into the fabric of the plot also. This is a book I can highly recommend. If parents of teens are wondering what to get their kids for Christmas, this would be a good starter. There are also a few discussion questions in the back which can be used to draw out a young reader's thoughts on the book.
