I read this book for a class at the University of Minnesota. Charles Eastman was a Sioux Native American who became a medical doctor with degrees from Dartmouth College and Boston University. This book centers around his life as a young native. It preserves a first-person record of a lost way of life. Very interesting!

There is so much myth about "the American Indian," or "The Native American," that for many non-Native Americans there is no way to understand what life was like on this continent before Euro-Americans wiped out those who lived here first.This book, by Charles Alexander Eastman(Née Ohiyesa), offers a genuine first-hand story about what it was like growing up in the years before the massacre at Wounded Knee, when his tribe had to flee to Canada.Ohiyesa's father was captured and imprisoned by American soldiers when his son was a very young boy. But by the time he was a teenager, his father was released from jail, and he went to Canada to reclaim his son. The boy went to American jails and ultimately was graduated from Dartmouth College as a physician. He went through a period in his life in which he wrote a series of books about the Lakota way of life, in which he explains values, belief systems, and the lifestyle he experienced as a child. Today, unfortunately, due to government imposed boarding schools during the first part of the 20th Century, this became a lost way of life and thought.Ohiyesa's books are treasures for the soul. They are simple, spare, Spartan even, and beautiful. Above all, they are honest. And in their direct, one-to-one description of how humans lived so simply with nature, they are inspiring and spiritual.Ohiyesa's books should be required reading for students of literature, sociology, American history, philosophy, and psychology. They are not written to lament the plight of a people. But dignifying the elegant ways of a tribe -- simply by recording it as it was -- creates and understanding. And once you understand, you cannot help but mourn for the natural and simple ways that were.

I love biographic styles from 1850 era on up to the 1900,s This is one of the best I ever read.Not only will it hold your interest ,but you do feel like you are there .I think the American Plains Indian was treated very badly because of a lack of understanding their ways & values.We can all learn from this book (especially today) how wrong we can be .Anyone interested in opening up there mind to things we can do better should read this book.

I enjoyed this book because it provides information about my family. My great grandfather was an older brother to Charles Eastman. I like the fact that it tells the story of a different time by an actual Dakotah person rather than a negative portrayal by someone from another race.

Real, deeply honest, shows the life of an Indian boy with poignancy and beauty.

After viewing the film "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" (the story of Charles Eastman) I became interested in his writings. This book is an easy read and gave me insight into the life of a young Santee Souix boy. The writing style was a bit unusual and dated. It was evident to me that his wife (who was Anglo) edited the book in order to make it more acceptable to the white readers. Overall, I enjoyed the book very much.

This is a most impressive description of the live of a young Native American. We can learn so much from this book to understand the spirituality and integrity of these people. Contemporary Americans need to look closely at all of this. So elegantly written and informative.

excellent book, not a "scare tactic" but just full of great info on preparedness. Unlike the "go build a bunker" books..this one looks at the challenges folks endured in the Depression, and what we can do to prepare for a similar situation. Only a small part is food storage, the rest is all the other areas to plan for. If you (like me) are hesitant to buy a book you can't read first, then do the "send a sample" option on your kindle or computer first....that is what I did and after reading the long section it sends, I promptly ordered it. This is the best book I have read on the topic (and I have read a LOT) and I wish it came in print. As for the "lists" it contains, it is some great websites (to read other books free) or to dig further on different topics. I have bookmarked more pages on my kindle in this book alone, than all my other books combined! The reason I am giving it 4 instead of 5 stars...is that for over 2 years they have been "claiming" that a printed version is in the works....but it never happens. Realistically I either need to keep rereading it, or take a zillion notes or make a ton of bookmarks..to go back to the key points (there are SO MANY)....I WANT a hard copy so I can highlight things to find later. If you are confident you will have a way to access this book (if the grid was down) then by all means buy it...it is excellent...but I guarantee that you will then want a hard copy and be as frustrated as I am

Not so.There is a great deal of useful and well-organized information in here and even though I have been practising the "preparedness mindset" for many decades U did find some useful new perspectives here.(As my wife might tell you, I always have a Plan B and often a Plan C as well).My thanks to the Plan B Writers Alliance for a very worthwhile read, as well as a highly valued new resource for my digital library.Best of luck to all during the challenging times ahead!

I purchased this encyclopedia (didn't know that at the time) on a recommendation from a friend. The information presented is exhaustive, extensive, and will give you a foundation to build on for the future.It is well written and flows nicely. If you are well versed in some subjects you may find the information boring. For instance the section on reloading ammunition was of little help to me but the section on food was perfect.Get it. Read it. And most importantly do what it says.

I've studied these pivotal points in history and economics as a graduate student in international relations, but this book addresses these pivotal points in a way that allows the reader to understand how these apply and are meaningful to America at this critical juncture in history.One always wonders how Russians, Chinese and Germans allowed Bolshevism/Communism/Maoism and Nazism to mercilessly overtake their country - as if imposed from outside, but now this book 'Locust on the Horizon' allows us to understand this process very well. America underwent its 1st Depression (7 million deaths due, in large part, to starvation), how do we prepare ourselves for the soon coming 2nd Depression? Rules and laws are being passed to ensure maximum starvation, e.g., law/rules/regulations real and improvised regarding the movement/transportation, storage of food, housing, and 'security.' This Kindle e-book provides prototype basic logic for food project management during hazardous times.We daily live in an illusion until such a book awakens us and shows how vulnerable we are.The reader will certainly awake after reading this book, and think critically before going back to 'sleep'.

This e-book is a great example of getting your money’s worth. I would dare say that you get much more than your money’s worth. This book is literally a treasure trove of survival/prepper information. That in and of itself is impressive enough, but what I’m really impressed with is the authors’ no nonsense approach to survival information. They do not fall victim to paranoia or obsession with this or that worse- case scenario SHTF situation. Rather, you receive a plethora of no nonsense logical information that makes sense and runs the gambit of possible survival scenarios. It is obvious from reading the material that the authors are not arm chair survivalists living in their parents’ basements, but rather intelligent, well-adjusted adults who practice what they preach and approach survival as the logical and intelligent practice that is should be. In the survival industry, books like this are few and far between. A great work of common sense survival/prepper information. Highly recommended. The survival/prepper community needs more material like this.

I cant praise this book enough. The research was thoroughly done, the writing is smart but on a level anyone interested in learning can understand and follow. It is not boring, like some nonfiction tends to get. The only thing i didnt like about this book is that there isnt more of it. I found myself wanting to learn more about the times that werent covered in this book. But i learned so much, and this book made me excited to learn. I wanted to know about our real, unvarnished, gritty history and that is exactly what i got. Now i am faced with the task of helping my children learn more about history than is in their schoolbooks. And i think i am up to the task.

I read this book and came to the conclusion that we, as a nation, need to change the way we teach American history. How can we expect high school students, who will be voters in a very short time, understand policy issues if they haven't been encouraged to think and analyze actions taken by policy makers and decide if they are morally or ethically wise?

This book is great, especially for teachers or as a gift for any smart teenagers in your life. About 10% of it is examination of the reasons why traditional history textbooks are so dry, and about 90% of it is more dynamic, surprising, exciting, and politically controversial stories from American history than you would ever find in a textbook (though some of them might be familiar if you ever had an excellent history teacher who went beyond the mandated curriculum). An excellent display of the difference between history as a living, values-charged argument over our national story and history as a boring list of names, dates, and facts, this book offers American history as it should be: discussion-worthy and memorable.

I just started reading this book, so I can't comment on accuracy throughout all of the text. However, I have taken the time to cross reference the first couple of chapters for accuracy and they are spot on! The style of some history books make reading very difficult. Not so with this author. Also, it should be noted that he states he is a sociologist, so bare that in mind. If nothing else, this text encourages the reader to begin to question history in ways that may be different from how it was taught in high school. The text challenges the reader to look beyond the facts alone. History is always better when it is linked to world events and appreciated within the context of how those events influenced American History. Additionally, presenting the entire scope of an individual or event seems to be the way the author approaches the subject matter. I like anything that makes me question or ask myself how or why something unfolded the way it did. So far, this has been interesting and easy to read.

As a history teacher, this book really made me critically examine what I teach and how I teach it. There is lots of good and thought-provoking ideas in here as well as suggestions and recommendations for those who teach history. This text is a must-read for anyone teaching history to our teens today.

Like many who went through the public school system I used to find history in general to be very boring. That was many years ago though and while I don't often seek out history books to read for enjoyment. That does not mean I shy away from history and when I dive into histories I usually also go to the trouble to verify the information being given. When footnotes are given little or no place in a book about history I don't let that get in the way of my knowledge, I look into other sources and decide for myself how factual a book is. That is part of why I enjoyed this book; it gives plenty of opportunity for the reader to check up on what he is reading.I would highly recommended this book to anyone who feels institutionalized knowledge is suspect and should be verified.

The author spent so much time and effort on self congratulation that I gave up before even getting to the meat of the book.

This was truly an eye opener and I recommend it for those people seeking the truth. It is apparent that there are several people who hav tried to conceal our true history.
