I was already interested in Cod after reading The Secret Life of Lobsters http://smile.amazon.com/The-Secret-Life-Lobsters-Scientists/dp/0060555599. From that I knew that the lobster population exploded thanks to aggressive fishing of Cod in the early 1900s. What I didn't realize was how Cod, and particularly Salt Cod, drove the exploration of North America, well before Columbus vacationed in the Bahamas. It's value was as easily transported protein, which unfortunately also made it a vital component to the slave trade.This book was written in 1999, so it's not completely up to date, but it really covers all the relevant history - right up to the crash of all the major fisheries in the 90's. After the fisheries crashed, there was some uncertainly that the fish could ever recover, but they apparently are slowly but surely coming back (up to 1/3 of historical levels in 2013). The history of the fish and the fisheries is interesting in and of itself, but what really makes this book so good are the geopolitical ramifications and history that was all an integral part of Cod fishing. A big thumbs up, and while you are there, check out The Secret Life of Lobsters.

While I am still not quite ready to eat fish for dinner anytime soon - despite great recipes - I must say that this is a truly fascinating read - author Mark Kurlasnsky does amazing research and I while I do not generally consider myself a fan of nonfiction - I hereby declare I will read everything Kurlansky writes! And furthermore, I suggest you do the same - I now know more about fishing than I ever expected to, but I am truly interested in the whole story of the fish this volume celebrates! I've learned more history and refreshed my grasp of geographywithin the pages of this little book than I have in years! I feel I could probably hold a conversation with an old salt fisherman on the merits of the quality of cod caught off of the Grand Banks! I really enjoyed this book and I am now reading Kurlansky's book "Dancing in the Streets" and next in line is his book about the Basque people! Oh and I heartily reccomend KUrlansky's book "Salt" it is astounding!

The title is self-explanatory, and accurate. This fascinating book describes how, over centuries, a single species of fish literally shaped the modern world, influencing politics, war and economies, the rise and fall of entire civilizations and the discovery and settlement or North America, among other things. The author provides considerable detail on history, politics and the capture, processing and preparing of this species. The book even ends with what the author describes as six centuries worth of recipes. The only knock, if you get the Penguin paperback version is the font size. It's tiny so anyone over the age of 40 will need some pretty strong reading glasses. But once you begin reading you'll barely notice it.

I really enjoy Kurlansky's books ! After reading the one on oysters end in October, the restaurant Legal Seafoods had their annual oyster festival and I could try different recipes for oysters. So fun ! This book on Cod had such a sad ending, we all know, about depletion of fish in our oceans, like destruction of the oyster industry, all because humans who could make a difference ignored the warning signs and those who warned them, and took action way too late.The mix of a focus on history of a food item (sometimes not food) and world history is wonderful. I had no idea one food item can have such an impact on human history. I only wish I had books like this when learning history way back when in school.I am now in the middle of Salt. And will buy Milk and other of his books.

A great book by Mark Kurlansky that explores the globalization of cod and shows its impact of history. This book taught me so much about this simple fishes influence on the past and current world. The book was as informative as it was entertaining. This book was by no means boring and I often found myself losing a few hours getting lost in the story of cod fishermen. Kurlansky writing is rich and full of an unexpected amount if emotion about his topics. The various recipes the use cod scattered around the book were a novelty touch and seem very interesting! I'm really considering trying one...only I find myself stopped by the knowledge provided by Kurlansky of how over fished cod are!

I can't recommend this book often enough. Kurlansky is a brilliant writer and does this sort-of "all the world's connected" kind of history extremely well. After reading, you think, "D'uh, I should've known that" when considering the centrality of food acquisition and production to the political-economy of the modern era, but Kurlansky is so gifted a writer that each discovery -- the reader's and those historical figures who are doing the discovering -- is an absolute delight. The book is also a splendid demonstration of just why the basics -- food and water -- are likely to be sources of conflict in coming decades.

I found this book very informational and a bit scary as an explanation of some of the oceans problems caused by man. I like how he takes a subject and really digs in to discover its history, present day, and possible future. His books have made me think and have an awareness about things that I never thought of before or just took for granted. I look forward to reading more of his works.

I loved this book--a desert rat who knows nothing about fishing. The story of how this fish influenced the discovery of the New World and the development of the US economy is breathtaking. My husband and I came to love bacaloa after a couple of trips to Portugal and Spain--wish I had known the cod story then.

At some point you realize the entire book is fluff. This guy might be good at learning languages, but he does a terrible job of communicating his method to others. I started skimming about 50% of the way through. Before this I read Fluent Forever based on reviews and that book blows this one completely out of the water. @Benny, if you are reading this: I found your website first and was stocked. I had bookmarked your premium service to buy, but after reading your book, I'm 100% confident I would be disappointed by that purchase too. I am no longer considering it nor is your website a resource for me any longer. As this review is so negative, I will state that I am not compensated by Fluent Forever, it's just a better book, hands down. I hope that I save some people time and money with this review.

This book really wasn't helpful at all. The gist of the book is that you immerse yourself in that language for 6 months by spending all your time around those who speak that language. First of all, what if there isn't a community near you that speaks the language? Second of all, is it really safe to go into that community as a stranger where you do not speak the language at all? I rated this a 2 star for his ability to make money from a catchy title. Don't waste your money. Fortunately I got mine through Kindle Unlimited as a free download.

Well, it's clear Benny is not a professional writer, but I knew that when purchasing the book. Most of the beginning chapters are all fluff-- talking about his personal history in language learning, dispelling language-learning myths, talking about how anyone can learn a language if you're just not lazy, blah blah blah. Nothing is backed up with science, and anyone that has studied language acquisition professionally will be able to call him out at a few points. (He once states that babies are at no cognitive advantage in language-learning to adults-- this is not true, their neural circuits are flexible at that age and stiffen over time, making it harder to get the brain to work that way again.) However, if you've ever tried to learn a language before, you know it really is just that you get what you put into it (in terms of studying and practicing), and when used as more of a motivational book instead of a methods book, I would actually recommend it. He is very passionate about what he does, and it's as obvious as it is infectious. Whenever I don't feel like studying, I'll read a chapter or two and it completely reignites my motivation.

If you’re interested in learning a language, this is a great introduction how to hack it faster than you think. I speak Spanish with my girlfriend and my spoken skills are way better than reading or writing but that’s the point. I can communicate. Read this book and stop believing false statements about learning a new language.

Benny's language learning philosophy is sound, IMO. While I haven't had a problem learning more than one language at a time (I just recently cut the number I was learning at once from 7 to, currently, 4), I can see his logic. You really don't have to be a genius to be a polyglot. But like Benny says, you have to be passionate about it and stick with it. If you're not determined, it's not likely that you'll get far. Thanks for your insight, Benny. Great stuff!

The theme of this book is speaking with others, which is good advice. Though the book has a good list of words to help with conversation and helpful grammar for many languages. If you have never studied languages before I do recommend. I was just expecting a little more.

The book is organized well, but the material is basically a repetition of the same stuff over and over, with plenty of examples of what he did. While the stuff could be new to those just starting out, to those already in the language learning game, it's not worth it

The over 100 projects with step-by-step instructions and color pictures make this book worth the price but what you are really buying is inspiration. The author has brought together every possible ribbon technique--bows, rosettes, tassels, jewelry, weaving, embroidery, knitting, and more! The colors, textures, and patterns make you want to begin a project immediately. This is a book you'll never put on the shelf because you'll want to try another project or another technique or make another gift like the beautiful hair accessories that any little girl would love. But the projects that excited me most were the ones to embellish clothing. I won't have to shop for gifts next year, I can find everything to make and give in this one book and wreaths to decorate all year round. Highly recommended!

I bought this book so that I could learn how to make hairbows for my daughter. I became an expert after the first 20 or so I made. I complied 80 bows for my daughter in different colors for different seasons in different varieties. I then started making package bows for Christmas gifts, I am really quite proud of myself. I suppose this book helped me to understand the basics of bow making however, after a while I had seemed to become not so fond of following the instructions precisly and went on my own judgement.

This is just what I was looking for. I ordered 3 books related to ribbon crafting on the same day. One arrived super fast but was so superficial as to be useless. One hasn't shipped yet. But this book is really all I need! I wanted a book that covered the use of bow making tools and this one provided that information as well as giving me ideas I hadn't even though of! I wanted to add really nice, professional looking bows to door wreaths, and this certainly covers that topic! I'm also interested in making bows to embellish hats...again, topic covered! Good purchase!

I am very pleased with this purchase. This book shows you more ways to use ribbon than I knew were possible.My uses for ribbon are mostly scrapbooking, cardmaking, and hairbows for little girls. This book touches on all of those subjects and many more. Additionally, the photographs showing the different types of projects are very beautiful and there are steps showing how to do the projects.I only wish it had more on making girls hairbows since this is a primary interest of mine.

I just received this book and I am completely impressed.This book covers everything you might want to do with ribbons; bowmaking, ribbon flowers, ribbon braiding, cardmaking embellishment, hair bows and headbands, curtains, gift bags and gift wrapping, decoratve pillows, lamps and mirrors, tassel making, jewelry, ribbon weaving, scarves kitchen towels, and even dog collars.Each of the written instructions are paired with color photographs, guaranteeing success in learning these new and innovative techniques. I am so thrilled with this book, and looking forward to really enhancing my ribbon skills. I have used this guide to get started on learning ribbon crafts, from making flowers to tying bows and decorating barrettes and headbands. There are lots of good ideas and instructions to go with them. With the current trend in baby accessories, this book can be a great help in learning how to make your own designs for your little ones!

So many ideas for use of ribbon in crafts. Good for beginners and experienced crafters. Also discusses the differences in ribbons, such as stamped ribbon vs the much more detailed trims that are available today. Whether you want to wrap a package for make flowers this book covers it all.

First, DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION. The Kindle version of this book is almost unreadable. It appears that a hard copy was scanned without any review or copy editing. Virtually every page includes one or more spelling or grammatical errors as a result which is quite distracting. The book itself would have benefited from an editor; the voice shifts randomly to second person from time to time and the story line while largely sequential in time has portions that are not linear. The history of the early Christians is interesting but the story is much too long and tortured.

You have to remember that this is a fiction, not the Bible. As a fiction, it carries well the message of the Bible. All the people in the book did not have the Bible and their knowledge of Jesus and His Kingdom were not deep. I thought it was amazing that they believed after just hearing about Jesus and His works from other people. I thought that sure had to be the work of the Holy Spirit. I can see that the first church would have been something like this. The book presents well the era and what living conditions might have been like at that time. A great book, especially if you are a Christian.

This book earns five stars from me because I didn’t want the story to end. How do you tell the story of Jesus from a fresh perspective? It would seem to be an impossible task but this story succeeds. Reading about how Jesus’ death and resurrection might have affected first century Romans, Jews and Greeks was both heartbreaking and exhilarating. I laughed, I cried and I felt so much more as I read this. The only disappointment was not knowing exactly what happened to Demetrius the slave who just happens to be my favorite character. A sequel perhaps? Demetrius travels to Greece with his mother’s ring, finds Theodosia and of course ‘The Big Fisherman’ should have a part as well as the Robe.

This was one of the most riveting and meaningful books I have ever read! If you've seen the movie and liked it ... you should LOVE the book. If you've seen the movie and hated it (and thought it fell so short of what the story actually is) ... you should LOVE the book! I hate to give books away, especially since part of my love for this book came in the fact that I had no idea what it was about and was surprised by the story line. I suppose I didn't read any of the back cover and had a book with no picture because I really had no preconceived idea of what the book would be about and it turned out to be the most amazing, engaging story ... of one I have actually known my whole life! It is definitely one of my top five books of all time!

When I reached chapter 12, I'd already submitted over 170 corrections to the e-Edition. The Robe is an enduring classic which I thankfully had found a paperback copy with corresponding pages to the E-edition. The story itself is again very different from the movie but has wonderful character development. The movie despite Richard Burton and Jean Simmons pales in comparison to this wonderfully written book. On to the kindle edition -- this book was clearly scanned and never edited. There were many common and easily rectified mistakes such as missing quotations marks. However, there were more blatant mistakes that included words that are not in the English language and most commonly the letter "l" in place of an exclamation mark. As I make my way through the e-edition I will continue to submit any errors that I notice in hopes that someone will edit this book. For now, if you are going to purchase it, by a paper copy (also available on Amazon). If I noticed that the errors I've submitted are fixed, I will most definitely edit this review. Until then, the paperback copy of this book is the way to go :)!

This is my favorite book! I've read it several times in print and this is my first time reading the e-version. Douglas connects so many stories within a man's journey to discover who Jesus was. He reveals a realism and lights up a journey of discovery and faith quite possible for early Christians to walk. I also enjoy Douglas's logical and reasoning mind as he looks at the experiences of Christ from a different perspective.One critique I have of the e-book: there are so many typos and misprints, to the point of distraction. It makes some passages difficult to read and understand. I hope the publisher fixes this soon. I was expecting better quality for the price of the e-book.

Shortly after beginning to read the Robe, I turned to the article about the author Lloyd C. Douglas, in Wikipedia, where I saw that after the making of the movie version of The Robe, Douglas had been unhappy and specified that there would be no movie of his later book The Big Fisherman. After reading The Robe, I think i understand. The novel is much richer and more complex than the movie. Hollywood as usual "improved" the novel in turning it into a movie. The movie was good, but read the book. Get a better understanding of why The Christian faith triumphed over the Roman Empire.

I still love this story--- but this kindle book needs serious editing. With so many spelling errors, I find it hard to read.

This book was awesome! It's packed with useful information. To be honest, when I got it and saw how many pages it had I thought it was going to be really dry and hard to get through, but he did a great job keeping it interesting.
