Review

"He more than anyone renovated the language of fiction and thus opened the way to a remarkable generation of Spanish-American novelists. Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes, José Donoso, and Mario Vargas Llosa have all acknowledged their debt to him." —J.M. Coetzee, The New York Review of Books"He has lifted fiction away from the flat earth where most of our novels and short stories still take place." —John Updike

One of the most widely acclaimed writers of our time, he published many collections of poems, essays and short stories, before his death in Geneva in June 1986. In 1961 Borges shared the International Publishers' Prize with Samuel Beckett. In a tribute to Borges, Mario Vargas Llosa wrote: "His is a world of clear, pure, and at the same time unusual ideas...expressed in words of great directness and restraint. [He] was a superb storyteller. One reads most of Borges' tales with the hypnotic interest usually reserved for reading detective fiction..."Andrew Hurley is a translator of numerous works of literature, criticism, history, and memoir. I bought it for the "Aleph" but, and, I also liked all the other stories. My first approach to Borges. Stimulating reading, well developed characters with some unexpected twists. I enjoyed it very much.

Redundant themes, and don't try to read Borges if you're tired. He takes a bit of work.

This is fantastic in more ways than one. It is not science fiction but more like Twilight Zone. It will make you stop and think a lot. The cover is a perfect one for what is inside.

A must read for short fiction fans !

This is my first Borges book, and I'm rather impressed. I don't read a lot of short fiction, but this is very good.

Excellent. Challenging stories which raised my juniors and seniors to the next level in Latin American lit and philosophy.

Great condition, loved it!

Keeps your interest.

This is a very good fundamental book on the basics of medical problems and their impact on aviators. As a flight surgeon in the Air Force, this book is a must have in my arsenal of knowledge. If you are a flight surgeon or in the field of aerospace medicine at all, this is a good book to have for reference. This book does not go into detail about diseases themselves, but rather the impact that they may have on individuals who fly on a regular basis. For a much more detailed, comprehensive approach to things I'd recommend The Fundamentals of Aerospace Medicine by Dehart.

The only complaint I have is that after purchasing this edition 3rd, I saw where there is already published a 4th more current edition which I did not see at the time of search and purchase. I would have liked to have bought the most recent edition. Otherwise the book I recieved was in good condition and arrived in a a timely fashion

I read just about everything on ballet there is. This was terrific and gave me an entirely different perspective on GB than I'd previously had. What a person!

a great follow up book to Balanchine and the Lost Muse. It picks up almost precisely where the other book ends, just as Balanchine is getting ready to launch his fabulous career.

Definitely of interest to any fan of the Balanchine choreography, and of the unique man himself. Enjoyable book, recommended to any balletomane.

As described and fast shipping.

Because it is a condensation of George's life, I find it dry, BUT will finish it!

Beautifully written with facts woven into a fascinating life story.A great introduction to the man George Balanchine and hisadmirable work.

Great history of a ballet king

Excellent work. Author is highly knowledgable and a skilled writer.

Review

“The lauded social critic and provocateur curates a diverse and unvarnished collection of personal essays reckoning with the experiences and systemic dysfunction that produced #MeToo.” (O: The Oprah Magazine)“From the author of Bad Feminist and Hunger (drop everything if you haven’t read this) comes a collection of first-person essays about rape, assault and sexual harassment. It couldn’t be more timely. Gay’s introduction moved me to tears, as did many of the pieces contributed by household names—Gabrielle Union, Ally Sheedy—but accounts from “regular” women moved me even more. Perhaps that’s the lesson we’re meant to take away from Not that Bad: we’re all “regular.” Shocking as they are, many of these stories will be familiar to us all—and we all deserve better.” (Elisabeth Egan, “The 17 Best Books to Read this Summer,” Glamour)“A profoundly personal anthology.” (Harper’s Bazaar)“Critical reading.” (Paste Magazine, “The Best Nonfiction Books of 2018”)“This is a devastating book, heartbreaking in how familiar and relatable each story is—yet there’s power and solidarity in it, too.” (Shondaland)“Not That Bad is essential reading.” (Refinery29)“A timely, necessary anthology.” (PureWow)“Timely. . . . It is a critical work that makes this much clear: The violations #MeToo rages against can and do damage people for a lifetime.” (The Globe and Mail)“It’s hard to imagine a more fitting editor for a collection like this… everyone should read it.” (Brooklyn Rail)

From the Back Cover

In this valuable and timely anthology, cultural critic and bestselling author Roxane Gay has collected original and previously published pieces that address what it means to live in a world where women have to measure the harassment, violence, and aggression they face, and where they are “routinely second-guessed, blown off, discredited, denigrated, besmirched, belittled, patronized, mocked, shamed, gaslit, insulted, and bullied” for speaking out. Highlighting the stories of well-known actors, writers, and experts, as well as new voices being published for the first time, Not That Bad covers a wide range of topics and experiences, from an exploration of the rape epidemic embedded in the refugee crisis to first-person accounts of child molestation and street harassment. Often deeply personal and always unflinchingly honest, this provocative collection both reflects the world we live in and offers a call to arms insisting that “not that bad” must no longer be good enough.

My 71-year-old, white, Christian, able-bodied, educated, successful, cishet father and I have been having a good ongoing conversation about the #metoo movement. He struggles with the idea that even a few innocent men will be maligned if we #believewomen. This book moved him to tears to learn how much worse the repercussions of rape culture are for me and his granddaughters than he thought possible.

I went on a bit of a journey through Opposite Land while reading this book. I love that this book exists. I hate that it has to.The title was what initially grabbed my attention: Not That Bad. How many times have I and countless others said that?! Was it because it wasn’t that bad? No. It was that bad but we still live in a world that, on the whole, doesn’t want to know about sexual assault. It doesn’t quite feel right to say I have a favourite anything where rape culture is concerned so instead I’ll say that the best definition of rape culture I’ve read to date is by Clem Ford: “A state of existence in which the impact and reality of sexual violence is minimised while the perpetrators of it are supported by a complex system built on flawed human beliefs, mythologies about gender, and good old fashioned misogyny."Usually I’d give each contributor in a book of essays an individual star rating and comment on their writing style or whether I connected with their story or not, but I won’t be doing that here. I’m so proud of everyone that contributed to this book and while some essays impacted me more than others, I’m not comfortable critiquing anyone’s experience of rape culture. My full review (too long to post here), including a quote from each contributor’s essay, can be found on my Goodreads profile.

This is an extremely intense book for anyone to read, but it’s well worth it. This book was able to put words to feelings I’ve never been able to articulate. It touched parts of me that have long since hidden in darkness. It gave me solidarity, it made me feel not alone and justified my anger. This allows me to feel, without guilt or shame, something that I’ve never felt before.I...Am...EVERY...PERSON ... IN... THIS... BOOKI can relate in some way to all of them.Thank you for this.

These essays are powerful and hard to read, but they gave me hope and courage too. We aren't alone and we have each other.

We shouldn’t have to need a book like this. But we do need a book like this.In the introduction, Roxane Gay explains that when she set out to assemble NOT THAT BAD, she intended to collect essays about rape culture, intermingling reportage with personal stories and writing that centered on the idea of “rape culture.” When she started receiving submissions, she realized that the book needed to be a place for people to give testimony, to come forth, to share just how deeply they have been marked. The result is this book, a collection of many voices. It spans age, race, body, class and gender. Most, but not all, of the voices are women’s, both trans and cis. Most, but not all, of their perpetrators are men, presenting the undeniable truth of systemic male violence while refusing to avoid the realities of queer trauma, of cissexism. The simple volume of voices is staggering --- it’s actually exhausting to realize just how many stories there are like these. When you realize what you’ve likely always known, what you might not want to think about, what you might not be able to avoid knowing: just how many stories there are like these. The accounts differ in experience, and in severity, but Gay emphasizes that each are “that bad.” There is a wide and important margin between rape and harassment, between language and action, but only in matter of degree --- and degree that cannot, in any real or purposeful way, be quantified. Some of these experiences have ruined a life, but all of them have altered lives. They are not the same, but they are rooted in the same issues, the same culture of rape, violence, misogyny and toxic masculinity. This is a book for everybody. It is a book that involves everybody, that affects everybody, because no one is immune from rape culture unless you consciously recognize its pervasiveness in our culture, and in yourself, and work to disentangle yourself from its poison.I will not call it timely. I will not call it provocative. To read this was, simply, agonizing. It was agonizing because it is the truth, because this is the raw truth of our world, at least our country. To know these experiences, to see yourself in some of them and to recognize how close you were, are, might be, could be, to so many of the others, is a terrifying, horrific thing. But it is the truth, and there is a vicious, important power in seeing it spelled out. It is not triumph. As AJ McKenna says in her piece, “Sixty-Three Days,” “And I thought This, this is the one that solves it, but it didn’t. Nothing ever does.”This is what rape culture looks like. This is what it sounds like. This is what it feels like. This country alone bears a million of these stories, maybe even an infinity, if you keep going back. Not a matter of if but when. Not a matter of if but of degree.Reading this book makes my face hot. It makes my head ache. It makes me angry. It wears me out. It is not a solution. But --- it is a reckoning. It does, in the clearest way, what survivors and victims have been asking for --- it gives them voice. This book gives voice, no qualifications. It is a validation. It believes you. It understands, all too well. It spells out what often goes unsaid, it lifts to the surface that which has been forcibly buried. It digs at scars because it uplifts the scarred and says yes, I see you, I see your hurt, and that should not have happened to you, and it did, and it changed you, and that matters, and you are not alone.I believe you. This was not your fault. You are not alone.By telling these stories, we see the degrees. We see the layers of behavior, from grooming to harassment to assault and rape, and we see how it manifests in masculinity, in misplaced power. Rape as an exhibition of power, as an exploitation of power, as an expectation, as a punishment, as a colonization. The more we listen to those who have endured rape culture, the more we can recognize how ingrained it is, the more we can combat it. The more we can say hey, this happened, this is happening. Hey, that’s not okay. Hey, that’s not funny. Hey, I said no. The more we can say, I believe you. This was not your fault. You are not alone. Some may find this book cathartic, others a resource, a reassurance, but ultimately it is fiercely necessary. Space these stories out. Take breaks, take care of yourself while you read it. Keep it with you. Refer to the contributor list and buy their books too, support them. I wish with all my heart that we did not need this book, but we do, and I am grateful for it with all that same heart.I believe you. This was not your fault. You are not alone.Reviewed by Maya Gittelma

One of the best anthologies I’ve read in forever. Roxane Gay complies amazing and eclectic essays that reach deep into the parts of us we tend to bury to avoid the emotions. The stories and observations also discuss the fear of myopic societies that refuse to examine the extraordinarily widespread problem of females lack of power, experience, confidence, and understanding of themselves since birth. Smile and nod, smile and nod.

Incredible and moving collection of essays and short stories. Thank you Roxane Gay for another incredible book!

If you relate to this topic at all (you do - whether you know it or not) you need to read this book. It was an honest, open, gut wrenching account of rape culture told through people of all color, age, gender, and economic status. It made me face issues in the past and let go of the guilt, pain, and self blame. I read aloud to my partner and used some of the stories as a talking point for issues we have been through because of the past. I wish I would have read this 15 years ago..

This book is actually pretty good for a beginner. The patterns are easy to follow and the images are clear. I bought this for a young relative and she grasped the idea of the Peyote stitch well thanks to this book. It may be too basic for those who are more advanced with the technique; but for those who are not, it's a nice start.

Love this book and fast peyote which I only just recently learned. Am working on the butterfly pattern in the book and it moves quickly with this awesome technique. Am hopeful that this author will release another fast peyote pattern book soon since once you begin using that technique, you want more patterns to chose from. Haven't figured out how to (or if I can) adapt fast peyote to regular peyote patterns. If anyone knows how, that would be great to know. Meanwhile, this is a great book, fairly priced. A magnification bar to help read the small print on the pattern rows is also helpful when doing the projects. I also print out the pattern so I don't break the spine of the book while I am working the pattern. Please write another book--this one is great!

The more I look through this book the more excited I get about making one of these bracelets/cuffs. The pictures are clear. The instructions are easy to read. It's the perfect book for a beginner, like me.

I love this book. I've made 4 bracelets already and can't wait to create more. For the best results use top quality seed beads such as TOHO or MIYUKI.

Love this book. Graphs are easy to read---easy to follow directions. Alot of atteactive patterns to make!

Good Directions

lots of patterns, but the instructions are very difficult to understand if you are just beginning to learn weaving beaqds.

Love the patterns in the book. Tried a couple of them wonderful...

This was a wonderful heartfelt book with very factual accounting of the events that occurred. I remember this when it happened and this book presents so clearly what it felt like to have been a part of this terrible event in our history. I would recommend this to anyone to read.

I wish I could place a copy of it into the hands of everyone I know. While Carolyn Maull was growing up in "black" Birmingham, I was spending every long summer of my school years visiting my grandparents in "white" Birmingham. While her father was waiting on tables at the Birmingham Country Club, I was receiving gracious engraved invitations from my grandparents' friends to enjoy swimming there during my summer visits. I wonder how many times I was entertained at Sunday after-church dinner in that sunlit, high-ceilinged dining room.I wonder how many times I was driven past the imposing structure of the 16th Street Baptist Church. It's as familiar to me as any other Birmingham landmark. But where I might have seen it in passing, Carolyn Maull was there every Sunday morning of her life. It was her church, her Sunday School, her four young friends whose lives were destroyed by hatred. For as ignorant as I was (and I was pretty ignorant), I carried one searing lesson away from that terrible September day when four young girls had their lives snatched away. I was the same age as they were--twelve years old in 1963. I've been able to move freely through my life's story--through school and college, marriage, family, and career, and into the sorrows of widowhood and the joys of being a grandmother. I've been able to do all of that, but their lives were stopped in an instant. They were robbed of their futures by a monstrous hatred, shored up by an unbelievable indifference.Read this book and Carolyn Maull will tell you what it was like to grow up as an African-American child in the most segregated, most racially violent city in America. You'll learn about how anxious parents tried to shelter their children, hedging them about with rules and restrictions designed to protect them from the worst of the violence. You'll understand just a little better about the baffling restrictions on everything from water fountains to lunch counters to highway restrooms. You'll feel some of the confusion and hurt that she felt when reaction to this bombing, and all the others, was muted and stifled--swept under the rug so that some semblance of normal life could go on. You'll feel at least some of the fear and pain of a little girl who, upon hearing of the murder of Medgar Evers in Mississippi could only think, "Is that going to happen to my Daddy, too? Is somebody going to shoot him in front of our house?"The author has paid a terrible personal price for the events of that long-ago Sunday morning. She has shared her struggle with us in all frankness, and we can rejoice with her that she has forgiven, she has prevailed, and she has grown stronger. I believe this book is vital to the chronicles of those terrible times, and that it contains lessons we can apply now and in the future. I'd like to see it on best-seller lists all over the country. Please avail yourself of this story and give it a thoughtful, careful reading.

This book is an intensely personal recollection of the events that the author experienced in her childhood in Birmingham and how those events helped shape her as a person as well as direct her work later in life. Being white and having been born in 1976, I had only heard of some of the things that were said to have happened. I had seen some appalling photos too, yet I had always imagined that it was a brief struggle to "get the bad guys" and set things straight during the Civil Rights Movement. It seemed so foreign and distant that it may as well have been ancient history. Reading this book has helped me enter into the Southern black experience and realize that equal rights were not quickly or easily brought off paper and into reality. It has also helped me better understand the history and trauma behind the way many in black communities still think and what they, I believe justly, fear. If you'd like to let the history of black people in America touch your heart and lead you towards understanding and reconciliation not just between white and black people but all people, read While the World Watched by Carolyn Maull McKinstry.

I have read quite a bit about the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing and visited the church when I was in Birmingham many years ago. But Mrs. McKinstry's account of the event reminds the reader that that event is not ancient history. Those who lost cherished friends or family members that day are still with us and bear those scars. Moreover, our current political climate seems to be intent on resurrecting some of the most heinous attitudes and behaviors from that recent past. Thank you, Mrs. McKinstry for your courage, your bravery, and, above all, your incredible resilience. Readers, buy this book and don't put it down until you've finished reading it. It is a timely reminder of the importance of standing up and speaking out for justice.
