We bought this encyclopedia because my 6-year-old daughter wanted a textbook about animals. The pictures are vibrant and the factual information is presented in short sentences that don't make her bored or tired of having to read to learn. She loves it and we love reading along with her, too! We also bought DK Publishings' "Ocean: A visual encyclopedia" as well so she has her land animals and ocean animals covered.

Filled to the brim with educational, interesting and fun facts about nearly every type of creature your child would want to learn about. I read reviews on other similar books but see that this was most recommended. I see why. This is so worth buying!!!!!! My 6 year thanked me over and over again for this book!

Great animal book full of photos and info on many animals; our 6 year old grandchild thoroughly enjoys it as we read it together and find many we didn't know about; has nice summaries and quick-facts that make it a great book for her library, which is mainly animals. She has to read slowly and skip certain tougher reading, but great to grow on, identify many animals and have fun doing so. Pictures are great and portray many different varieties of most animals.

My husband and I got each of our nieces and nephews (ages 4-7) this book, and they absolutely love it! It is pretty far above their reading level, but they love the pictures and ask their parents to look things up for them.

Got this for my 10 year old as a simple reference to animals around the world. He spend two weeks looking uup new animals each day and called grampa to see what he knew about said animal.

My daughter received this for Christmas. I enjoy reading about the different animals and looking at the pictures with her. She is 3 and loves learning about the animals.

This book has been my 2-year-old's favorite for several months now, engrossing her for hours at a time. The pictures are fantastic, and the descriptions are fascinating, even for an adult. For example, we learned that apes don't have tails while most monkeys do. This will definitely grow with her!

I ordered 3 animal encyclopedias for our homeschool classroom as we are doing a couple years of Zoology curriculum. This was the one that I picked for our 8 year old daughter. The two things that I like best about this encyclopedia is the colored labels on the right side of the pages that designate "mammals", "birds", "reptiles", etc. Makes it easy for my daughter to find the animal she is looking for. I also like that every animal in the book has the scientific/Latin name underneath the name of the animal in English. The book is FULL of bright, crisp photographs and my daughters love looking through this book! My one complaint is that it is a soft back book and on the first day my daughter used it, the cover and biding pulled away from the pages :( I used some Tacky glue to reattach the spine and there have not been any problems since. It's just not as sturdy at a hard-back book.

Akerlof and Shiller are on the forefront of the behavioral economics movement and outline many key ideas of the movement in this book.They spend most of the book addressing the psychological motivations for the biggest economic crises in the US over the past century and give a refresher course in basic macroeconomics. Throughout their entire discussion, though, the most radical idea they introduce is near the end of the book. They suggest that in order to properly understand macroeconomics, it is essential to discuss the "special poverty among minorities." Or rather, that levels of inequality in a society influence the macroeconomy. This idea is illustrative of the authors' main point on the heavy influence of human psychology on the economy. They craft the argument that the conventional wisdom in economics is flawed because it does not take into account societal constraints and human behavior, which greatly influence the economy.The questions the reader is left with upon finishing the book are: 1. How can we properly include psychology in economic models? 2. To what extent is the government needed to establish the "rules of the game"? The authors emphasize the importance of these topics, but hardly provide prescriptive solutions.Overall, this is a well-written, well-argued book on the topic of behavioral economics and finance. Whether you agree or disagree with Keynesian economics, this text will definitely raise some interesting points.

This book provides an excellent insight in the various elements of human behaviour into the financial markets. It brings together elements of academic studies from both authors and they have proven their worth in the financial and real estate markets (any type of asset). The concepts have a clear pragmatic element and with this book Akerlof and Shiller succeed in popularising their models and academic research. Somehow the reader is left with a feeling that they tried to fit the different parts into one book leaving the reader a bit puzzled when moving from one chapter to another. The book has a bit of an awkward feeling but that does not take away the valuable lessons and insights. By now the elements and details of financial crises of the last decade are fading into the past. The lessons, rightfully, should not and that is the true value of this book.

Well written book that shed lights on the economical issues from a macroeconomic perspective, with the notion of 'animal spirit' and how it influences a person's thinking in common business activities. Wish to have read this book before actually pursuing my MBA degree, nevertheless it left unconventional thoughts that wouldn't be taught in a classroom.

What Keynes means by 'animal spirits' is made a lot clear by the authors. They identified five types of human mental states that constitute animal spirits in humans. The notion of animal spirits is particularly useful in explaining the boom-burst cycles in capitalism and rampant corruption in autocratic states. I really got a lot out of this book. For one thing, I learned the oddities of how economists look at the world due to how economics is taught these days. Wow! I was surprised at the major lack of common sense that seems to trouble the field. No wonder few economists forecasted the 2008 Recession. I also learned a lot more about economics and some of the key factors that drive the economy. I'd read quite a few books about economics before reading Animal Spirits; it's not the first book you should read about economics. But if you're pretty well oriented to economic terms and views, this book injects a lot of common sense into the field of economics. It's by world class economists, including one who won a Nobel Prize in economics. I hope that this will be a seminal book in directing the field of economics into more successful approaches.

For the price (even at Amazon's discount) I expected the photos to be a better quality, perhaps a little glossy too. The photos are beautiful but they actually look better on line when you view Amazon's peak inside. In the book the pictures look like the copies I get from an in-jet printer of my old family photos. Not as sharp and clear as the original. If you are looking for inspiration and excellent instructions on how to create an English Garden then I recommend Ursula's other book- "The Ultimate Garden Book For North America." This one is a great coffee table book. You and your guests will enjoy looking at it once in a while. There are phtotos on almost every page. However, I don't think it will be very useful if you want to update or create a new room in your garden.At the end of each chapter there is a list of gardens in England that you can visit for the particular theme.The Chapters are titled as follows:1. A larger coffee table-size book with beautiful, colorful photographs of a variety of English gardens, it has interesting, easily readable descriptions/details of each garden and its history. For all who love England, gardens, and inspiring ideas, it's the perfect book!

What can be more devastating for parents than to learn that their child is autistic? The severely debilitating neurological disorder, which affects social and language development, can be difficult to treat. When her son was diagnosed with autism at 19 months, Seroussi, a small-business owner and wife of a research chemist, determined to do everything in her power to help her child achieve normal functioning. PRO: The author writes extremely well and the narrative of her son's early diagnosis of autism and his eventual recovery through diet (GFCF) and therapy is a compelling read and offers hope for any parent with an autistic child. KS is a "warrior" mom who devoted her life to her son's recovery and the happy ending is well deserved.CON: The book is old (~10 years) and the science has moved on. Unfortunately, she refers to the infamous (now mostly debunked) vaccine-autism link. I'm no doctor/scientist but I read a lot about autism. It now seems there's 0 link between autism/celiac but there is likely some link between gluten-sensitivity and a subset of autism cases (it's likely there are several types of autism with different causes). So a GFCF diet may help some children (especially if they have GI issues) but most will probably not be helped. I'd recommend DR. Sears' "Autism Book" or Martha Herbert's "Autism Revolution" instead for a more up-to-date look at alternative treatments.Unfortunately, because much of the narrative is about her son's early development and her thoughts at the time- this book can't really be revised to update the science.

Hi I bought this as i have a daughter who is 3 with autism.I loved her tenacity in the book and admire her fight for her son.However it is mainly about diet.Other biomed is not discussed too much in the book.It is still a great story and very helpful info on diet.Also some great info about her experience with some of the great autism doctors and researchers.Overall it sorda reminded me of louder than words by Jenny McCarthy,but Jenny talks much more about all Biomed treatments.Im very happy her son recovered through diet and ABA but our journey has been a little tougher.We also implement the GFCF diet and low sugar but we also have done an array of other things all Moms on the biomed journey are familiar with.I know alot of people can be put off by her "parents who dont try GFCF are bad".It is a ch allege to say the least but the results are amazing.My daughter is much more with it.More in our world so to speak.I believe autism is some form of the immune system issue attacking itself.While autism can come from many ways.Yes vaccines are one of them.At least my babys was.Its very complex.Its just like a puzzle as they say.Your child may have a severe allergy that has taken them into autism.I find it helpful to look at your family history as she did.Its almost like detective work and last but not least DONT GIVE UP!!!!

I believe any parent with a child diagnosed with Autism, ASD, PDD, allergies and bowel disease should invest their time and money in reading this book. Reading this book validated what I had suspected with my child. Karyn Seroussi filled in the blanks. I feel empowered. Yes, it is difficult to accept her suggestions to a restricted diet for some. It is selfish to not at least try the diet because it is inconvenient.I have been preparing special meals for my daughter since she was able to eat solid foods because she has severe food allergies to milk, soy, all nuts and eggs. My pediatrician took it even further and tested for food sensitivities (IgG; Elisa testing) and discovered a list of food intolerances. Same ped checked her titers for MMR and discovered they were through the roof. My baby's system was overloaded with vaccines. I was fortunate to have an open-minded pediatrician on my daughter's side. She has been on a specialized diet removing the additional 23 harmful foods (IgG) for one year now and she has improved tremendously. Especially removing the apples and tomatoes from her diet. However, it wasn't until reading this book did I understand the reason for her improvement. I even took it further and removed the last phenol from her diet.....BANANAS. She no longer has hours of inconsolable crying. Her GI physician wanted to put her on Prevacid and all along it was bananas. Needless to say I didn't start her on Prevacid. She recently started Nystatin and after the initial die-off of yeast, the haze has lifted. For the first time since she was 3 months old, she's now 5 years old, she laughed when we tickled her. I didn't understand the effect of yeast until reading this book. At least I was already on the right path. MOM'S KNOW........This is a wonderfully written story of ups, downs and eventually ups. It will not be the answer to everyone's situation. Although I highly recommend reading the book if only to better understand and answer your own questions.~ From a parent of a non-Autistic child but instead with a child with diagnosed with PDD, LGS, asthma and severe food allergies.

I liked this book even more than book #1. I suppose that is due in part to the first book being largely background, along with the first parts of the grand adventure.I won't summarize the story, as it is described well already. All the characters are well thought out, but in book #2 I was pleased to witness them grow and mature.; particularly in Jordana's case, as her sense of adventure and self-proclaimed maturity (based on her age, 18) had been setting her up for hard learned lessons and unnecessary risks. In book 2, I became less annoyed with her haughty attitude, and she earned some respect.Kiernan, who previously irked me to no end, is forced to face reality...we can't kid ourselves anymore once we reach rock bottom, can we?Overall, if you like book one, you will like book #2 more. Where some characters seemed wishy-washy before, this installment includes forced learning from the school-of-hard-knocks. Since God can best see His reflection in us after the repeated heat of the designer's fire, so it is with these beloved characters. Enjoy.

In the “Ribbons West” trilogy is just as entertaining as the first volume. Jordana, Caitlyn and Brenton make their way to California, with a lengthy, harrowing stop in Omaha. Victoria and Kiernan move about in California and face life threatening/changing hardships. Once again, this is a stand alone novel that wraps up at the end. There is a 3rd book which I’m more than happy to read as I’ve really come to enjoy these characters and their exploits. I think you will too!

I would very much recommend this series and authors. I have started the 3rd book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading each book and have had difficulty in putting it down at times. The characters are very real, full of faith, love and encouragement. And of course I have loved learning more about the era that the transcontinental railroad was being built and how it affected the people living at that time.

You will want to read Judith Pella & Tracie Peterson's Ribbons of Steel Series first as it is of the parents and then Jordana and Victoria as children in Book 3, although Book 1 of Ribbons of Steel Series was a bit too filled with historical references for me at the time I read it ... I can appreciate it more looking back at it... and I positively loved the series!Please read my review under "Westward the Dream" entitled "An Excellent Series"! As I stated previously I love Tracie Peterson books and this series did NOT disappoint me. Where this is not a new series it is a fantastic series ... a wonderful mix of history and romance ... I would recommend it to anyone who loves Chritian reading, history and/or romance it is a delightful mix of all three ... I am fortunate as I absolutely love Christian reading and romance and I have to admit I truly enjoyed reading the all about the railroad history, although it truly did not interest me when I picked up this series! I think the only disappointment in this series is when I completed the final book!

You won't want to put this book down. The Civil War. A Brother, Sister & newly arrived Irish gal. They leave the east coast for California. A lot of action & complications, & love, but through their faith they kept going.

I Loved the biblical references, the sweet storyline and the reminders of God's presence in our life. The characters and the way they are developed is exquisite and very entertaining.

Second book in the series. I enjoy books about the settlement of the west, and this one was not a disappointment. By and large, a book full of optimism and faith. Great combination!

A believable plot enhanced by believable characters and of course excellent writing. And I am also enjoying learning about the start of the railroad across the nation. I am so glad I bought all three in this series!
