Amazon is attributing "The Quantum Theory of Fields" to the wrong writer. The author of this three-volume treatise, of course, is Steven Weinberg (no middle initial), who is also the author of "Cosmology" and "Gravitation and Cosmology." Steven Weinberg has no middle initial. I think Amazon should correct this.

This will certainly be a classic reference book. However, it focuses on the underlying formalism. So it is not going to be overly useful as an education tool, unless you are looking into the fundamentals which support the theory.

had a lot of good design, proper calculations for expansion tanks, piping sizes, general considerations and a lot for install. there are a lot of reference mistakes that makes it hard to check work. some of the knowledge questions were wrong. NO Troubleshooting! it's geared for installation only. however if you truly study this book you will learn symptoms and know why stuff is not working it is all there. just no troubleshooting/service module which is what i really wanted. if it was 100$ or less i'd say it would be worth 5 stars, i still want this in my library don't get me wrong, solar module was lacking. for reference i'm an 11yr hvac guy that has 95% experience in forced air. and it was worth it just really wanted some troubleshooting and service condensed in 1module like modern hvacr books do. i flip from chapter expansion tanks to chapter circulatory to chapter properties of water to consider issues. i want to give 3.5 stars but for over 150$ i say again i expected more. no troubleshooting examples etc.

I had wanted to purchase this book for quite a while, but the price kept me from buying it at first.Well, several new projects came across my desk, and I purchased it to design and bid the work.This book is well written and illustrated. I was not only impressed with the author's knowledge of thetopic, but how the information was presented and explained. You could save a small fortune by readingthis book before you design or install a hydronic heating system. I have used other resources for reference,but I have never seen all the information you would ever need, in one resource. This author put a lot of timeinto this book.

I am a contractor that has been looking for a greener approach of building. I had a friend that was interested in putting Hydronic floor heat in his shop floor, and I decided to invest the money and learn the ins and outs of the systems besides the basics you can find for free online.If you hire contractors, plumbers, or HVAC professionals to install hydronic heat be sure you ask to see previous work, or at least follow up with references. ALWAYS get a signed contract. This subject is very much an exact science to get the efficiency, and longevity you desire your system to have to begin with. I have seen several poorly designed systems that cost more money to operate, didn't work well enough, or even worse, didn't work at all. People think it is only a matter of running pex piping under concrete and plumbing it into a boiler - they could not be more incorrect.Personally I have several contacts of mine that have hired professionals to install under floor heating systems - and failed to do it correctly. The home owner is left with a negative opinion of hydro heating because they trust that the installer did the job correctly, but the heating system is just not what they expected it to be. Truth be told if the contractor had read this book it would work correctly.This book is a text book - full of information and proof of engineering. It is well worth the $170 paid for it. It is chocked with 700+ pages of information that even the season veteran plumbers will look to draw information on for the rest of their careers. If you are thinking about building and installing a Hydronic heating system , I highly encourage you to purchasing the first (nd most important) tool of that installation right here.

Took a boiler maintenance class, again... and instructor mentioned this book , it's loaded with information on boilers and hydronics.I would definitely recommend this book for students as well as homeowners.

After natural gas became available in our neighborhood I used this book to design a replacement for the 40 year oil oil-fired system we had. I found the book invaluable for this purpose and it didn't matter that it isn't the latest edition. The new edition covers topics that weren't relevant to my project anyway.

Siegenthaler is the guru of modern hydronic heating and this is the Bible. It's not for the faint of heart if you don't have a head for math and science, but if you can wade through it, the potential system performance is quite impressive. This was a crucial foundation that allowed me to design and install a hydronic heating system for my home.

Like most of the people who need a book like this, I work in the industry. In my case I design and specify the systems but have almost no prior background in heating systems. I've seen many of them in the field being put together and know most of the principles behind how they work. This book takes you all the way through from beginning to end and explains what every component does and what the reasoning is behind them. Having it on my desk has made my job immensely easier.

I can't say enough great things about this book. Ben Montgomery is one of the most talented journalists working today, and the LEPER SPY is some of his best work: in it, Montgomery deftly combines meticulous reporting with page-turning narrative. He's a skilled storyteller with a strong voice and an unparalleled ability to bring characters (and history) to life. Even more, the LEPER SPY asks important questions about contagious disease, the price of war, and the value of faith. I read this book in a single weekend and was very sorry to see it end.

Wonderful story and glad to see a book about a hero who would not otherwise be acknowledged. She not only assisted the allies at the risk of her life and suffered with leprosy (which worked to her advantage to cross enemy lines) but after the war worked to improve conditions in the leper colon of her native country. Later she was healed in the USA and continued her efforts with leprosy throughout the rest of her life.

Heard the author at a library event in Palm Harbor and ordered the book that night. It is a fascinating - mostly unknown - tale of the heroics undertaken by a young woman in the Philippines who contributed in a real way to the outcome of WW II. She ended up in Washington, DC. and lived out her life in anonymity, despite her remarkable past. Montgomery is a wonderful writer who takes the reader right into the heart of the story line. I would highy recommend this book.

I am sure there are hundreds if not thousands of unsung heroes of the world’s many wars. Most of them left no record. Joey left almost no record and we would never have known her story if she had not had a dreaded (at that time) disease. Ben Montgomery has done an outstanding job of uncovering the life of one of these many unsung heroes. He tells her story of helping to win a war, of helping fellow lepers, even of serving in the Peace Corp. I can’t imagine the research needed to uncover someone’s life in the Philippines during WWII. He paints a beautiful picture of a woman who did what was needed but who wanted no glory. She is a shining example for today’s me first culture.

What an extraordinary memoir, told in an engaging manner, about a truly remarkable woman who had a significant and positive impact on the American forces in the Philippines during World War II.

Love this author. He makes the story come alive for me with his craft! I cannot wait to add more of his books to my library! Get busy writing Ben!

As a NYC native, resident, and as a photographer, I really couldn't be more pleased with this book. The images contained throughout have a markedly classic feel to them. The scenes possess an intimate sense of wonder as opposed to an impersonal and caricatured feeling that is all too abundant when it comes to NYC photography. Whether it's a lone figure in the snow, or an empty street, there is an overwhelming sense of humanity on each page--something that may come as a shock to those who (incorrectly) perceive NYC as a cold, thoughtless place.Each visual vignette is immersive. Whether it's an alleyway in Chinatown or a wide open street in Times Square, there's a sense of scale that magnifies both the size and the congestion of the city. The overall palette looks modern, but feels nostalgic.All the lovely imagery on its own makes for a good experience, but Gucwa complements her photos with personal, but relatable statements about her connection to her home, as well as her craft. The content switches between reminiscent stories, tales of wonder, and poetic passages; they come together as a sort of diary, its pages steeped in love and adoration for a city with many suitors. The images pull you in, but the text holds your hand as a personal guide.If you're a photographer (or an aspiring one), flipping through the pages should give you some additional satisfaction, as the camera model and settings have been included alongside each photo. The cameras vary in ability and technical strength, but it's clear that the images-- and their creator--do not.New York is often romanticized, so it's hard to do so in a way that feels unique and genuine. NY Through the Lens manages to accomplish this feat without feeling hokey or contrived. It's a really fantastic collection of photography and a strong collection of writing. Pick it up.

i bought my copy on Amazon on the cheap. i have been watching this very talented young woman for many years. i captured the same scenes of New York City when i was in my 20's and 30's. my captures were created using black and white 35mm negative film using a Canon F-1 camera. she has become an artistic friend on FAA artists web site. my favorite image she has created was taken in Chinatown in the early morning. secondly i am moved by her Central Park images captured following snow storms. she is one amazing New York based photographer you must keep your eye on over the next forty years. she will continue too create some of the most important New York images ever created.

NY Through the Lens is a good book for New York City residents, those who once were and those who hope to be. It's an across-the-board compilation of excellent photos from both ground and bird's-eye level. (A little too much of the latter for me -- the roofs of most NYC buildings look much alike.) Ms. Gucwa nabs all the usual suspects -- Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Brooklyn Bridge, etc. -- but also features not-yet-gentrified neighborhoods (at least not obviously in the hands of the 1%); snowy streets, many at night (my favorite chapter); and street scenes reminiscent of a Scorsese film. She has a very good eye, and obviously spends a lot of time outside with her camera. Being a former harbor worker, I'd like to see more shots from the water, folks on the Staten Island Ferry, and so forth -- maybe she'll include them in her next book.Unlike many photo books, this one has coherent text, too, written in an almost confessional style that tells me more about Ms. Gucwa, a NYC native but from the far side of the East River (Queens). She is a good writer, adding just enough text to make the book more interesting, not so much you read half and move on. Her captions are mostly good, but many are repetitive if the pictures are similar -- in the vein of "Rooftops looking north from Empire State Building," "Rooftops looking south from Empire State Building," etc. But essentially it's a good read as well as a good look.Photographers take note: This isn't a photo how-to book, other than teaching by example. Ms. Gucwa includes info on camera, ISO and lens settings, but doesn't say what lens she used. In some cases it's not an issue -- she took many of the photos on her iPhone -- but when she used a pro level DSLR, I would have like to know what glass she shot through. Not that buying the same lens would make me as good a photographer....Despite its few minor slips, NY Through the Lens is a great book for folks who love the Big Apple. I'm glad I bought it, and I think you will be, too.

I am a born-and-bred Brooklynite with a tremendous sense of pride for my home. I also haven't lived in NYC since 2002. While I visit home about twice a year, I strongly identify with the big city in a lot ways. It defines who I am and how I act, even if I currently live in the laid back area of Portland, OR. I love reminiscing over my time back home and do often feel that tinge of regret about leaving.And then Vivienne Gucwa released her wonderful book, NY Through the Lens. The reason why this book is so special is not so much about what it is but rather about what it is not. I have a number of photography books dedicated to New York and the one thing that I noticed about them is their homogeneity. The pictures within these books seemed to blend together without conveying a sense of place or time.That's where Vivienne's book shines so brightly. The book is filled with purposeful photos that showcase a clear sense of place. They also exude with personal emotion, as illustrated by her wonderful writing and poetry that accompanies her imagery. I flip through this book not because I want to see what my home looks like but because I want to remember what it feels like. So thank you, Vivienne. You've done this New Yorker proud.Disclaimer: I am lucky to consider Vivienne a personal friend. Despite this, I preordered this book and paid in full just like so many of you. I first rented this book out on my kindle and I enjoyed it so much I bought a paperback copy. It has a bunch of recipes I want to try and nutritional charts I wanted to be able to easily reference. It is a book chalked full of useful information and in an easy to follow format!

This book on nutrition arrived at the right time as I was planning to start a course on nutrition at a private medical school. I found in the book everything I want to satisfy the needs of my students who are studying nutrition. The language of the book is very simple and understandable as I teach in a French dominated environment. My students can easily grasp the contents of the chapters and make good use of what they learn.
