I admit I’m a bibliophile as well as an Aviation Geek. Also I am a Combat Vet who owes his life to Naval Aviators....twice. My favorite genre is a young man joining the Navy / Marine Corps and learning of their early indoctrination into commissioning and finally the nitty gritty of their flight training. The creme’ de la creme is when they become Fleet Aviators and go to War putting warheads on for heads.When I first viewed Top Gun ( first of dozens ) I was finishing up my mandated one year in a Naval Hospital, training up for the fleet. I already had orders for a Man of War and felt 12 feet tall after watching the movie.Yet in all of the books I never read squat about NFO’s nor the Enlisted ASW guys in fixed or rotary wing. I knew these men were good but never read about them do to the dearth of writing.I admit to skepticism reading this....Air Force jocks call the Weapons Guy in back as the GIB. Guy in Back. We all know the huge ego’s of Naval Fighter and Attack Pilots. Now I understand that truly , the A6’s , F4’s , F14’s had a definite advantage to having another Warrior Brain to utilize the computers , radar etc to effectively splash or pink mist the enemy.The author takes you on the highs and lows of initial training. How down chits truly SUCK. I had no idea the reams of info a RIO had to memorize and with proper CRM both Aviators made their respective weapon system far more lethal. I can’t imagine pulling six g’s, maintaining SA and doing mental trigonometry and algebra.The only reason I did not rate five star is I wanted more. But I’m lucky , I get to read his next book. SFMF

If you like books about military aviation, you should enjoy this one. The author, Dave "Bio" Baranek, tells about going through Naval flight training in the 1979-1980 timeframe and earning the gold wings of a Naval Flight Officer. He details the subsequent training which qualified him as a Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) flying in the back seat of the supersonic F-14 Tomcat. He then shares some of his experiences as a member of an operational F-14 squadron, flying in the Tomcat from an aircraft carrier at sea.Baranek later became an Instructor at the Navy's Topgun fighter weapons school. His tour of duty at Topgun is detailed in Baranek's first book, "Topgun Days". This book, "Before Topgun Days", is thus the prequel to his first book. Both of Baranek's books provide interesting reading and include a section with color photographs.

This is Bio's second book and I truly feel like I know him. As a fellow Naval Officer and aviator, I wish I would have know him back in the day.Fair winds and following seas! I'm looking forward to your next book!Mike FerraraLT USNR

David's writing style is like a good story teller sitting across from you keeping your interest with ease. This book is a more personal look at "Bio's" Navy career than "Top Gun Days" was. I recommend both books as very enjoyable reads.

The University of North Carolina basketball team, 2009 national championship winners, owns more victories over the past 50 years than any other college team. In this history, UNC alum and veteran sportswriter Chansky (Blue Blood) explains how the Tar Heels got there through the well-researched stories of three disparate coaches. Until the arrival of coach Frank McGuire in 1953, the big men on UNC's campus were football players. A well-coiffed Irish-Catholic charmer from the streets of New York City, McGuire set high standards for his players on and off the court, leading the Tar Heels to a 32-0 season en route to the 1957 national championship. Dean Smith (a liberal Baptist from Kansas) and Roy Williams (a broken-home survivor from the Appalachian Mountains who recently published his own memoir) continued the winning tradition, and the relationship among all three continued to grow until McGuire's 1994 death. Drawing on published and personal interviews with coaches, players and fans, Chansky is well-read but far from impartial, and presumes his readers feel the same; accordingly, this should make an ideal gift for any Tar Heels alum. Interesting reading!

Art Chansky is perhaps the most insightful writer of UNC literature. He has not failed to deliver in this endeavor. Good perspective on three very different personalities.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are one of the most successful college basketball programs in the land. There are of course many ways to decipher which program or team is the greatest ever... and the author massages history to present a book that constantly summarizes that North Carolina's is by far the greatest. To a lot of fans the final crown should be placed on the head of the team that has won the most National Championships and that is by far UCLA with eleven. Kentucky has seven and Indiana and North Carolina have five each. But if the reader can put the championship total discrepancy aside... the more salient subject that the author accurately portrays is the unmatched growth of a "TAR HEEL FAMILY"... that was started by the "dressed-to-the-nines" street wise in life and basketball... inimitable... New York Irishman Frank McGuire. Frank was one of thirteen children who grew up Fatherless when his New York cop Dad died at an early age. His life was built around sports and he became the coach of St. Johns University in New York which became one of the greatest basketball teams in the country. In fact McGuire led them to the NCAA championship game. A point well made in the book is that he also accomplished this with North Carolina when he won it all with his undefeated North Carolina team in 1957. The 1957 championship is still mentioned as one of the greatest upsets in history as Carolina beat the all-time-all-time great Wilt Chamberlain and his Kansas team in triple overtime to win the NCAA Championship. As of this writing there are only two other coaches in history that have led two different schools to the NCAA Championship game... and they are Larry Brown (UCLA & Kansas), Roy Williams (Kansas & North Carolina). Since Larry Brown had played college ball at North Carolina for McGuire and the immortal coach, Dean Smith, who was handpicked (from Kansas) by McGuire as an assistant and an eventual replacement... all three coaches have ties to the North Carolina family... and that is the essence of this book. (It should be noted that Coach McGuire also coached the St. Johns baseball team to the NCAA Championship game.)The biographical coverage of Coach McGuire is fascinating and how his street moxie created what was known as the "UNDERGROUND RAILROAD" in which he recruited the heart of North Carolina's teams from New York. One of his best teams starting lineup was known as "Four Catholics and a Jew"... the Jewish ballplayer from New York was Lennie Rosenbluth who not only had the highest individual season scoring average in North Carolina Tar Heel history... but he also holds the career record for highest Carolina scoring average also. The author tells Dean Smith's life story as well as current coach Roy Williams and current Bobcats coach Larry Brown's. The method in which the author keeps jumping back and forth between coaches and simultaneously changes time stamps becomes very confusing at times. One second you're in the middle of 1990's Carolina history with one coach and then you blink your eyes and you're back in 1962 with another. This happens constantly throughout the book and makes it hard at times to continue a seamless reading flow.It's wonderful for any sports fan to learn of the respect between these different generations of coaches as they always remain in contact and always help out each other... each other's families... and each other's players and associates. This is what is most clearly defined without a doubt in this book... that the North Carolina family truly endures. Also covered is the overall growth of the ACC as a powerful organization and the yearly recruiting wars which North Carolina seems to be dominating.Any basketball fan will enjoy this book... but every basketball fan including even the most fanatical Carolina fan will get confused at times as dates... places... and coaches... overlap... go forward... go back... and forth... at times in an incomprehensible manner.

One of the best college basketball books I've read in years -- and I've read them all. Beginning with the author's "Ten What-Ifs of Carolina Basketball" I started to wonder if this unlikely dynasty might be based on as much *luck* (or happenstance) as anything else?The book details the lives of three legendary coaches (Frank McGuire, Dean Smith and Roy Williams) and their uncanny connections that have sustained the most consistently successful college basketball program of the last half century. The author tells all the story of all three coaches factually and, at times, vividly as he melds a timeline of historical events and behind-the-scenes insider accounts of the coaches, players, recruits, and fans.This book should be on the must-read list for all Tar Heels and serious basketball fans. It's informative, entertaining, and authoritative (which is not a surprise, really) since the author has been covering Carolina basketball for over thirty years. Highly recommend.

I can recommend this book to serious college basketball fans and fans of sports lit, but it is by no means the definitive work on the UNC basketball program; that book has yet to be written. The writing in this one is at times ponderous and meandering, and disappointing. And fans of the history of the game of basketball may wonder how Roy Williams, with his two National Championships but limited impact on the game itself, deserves equal billing with the great Dean Smith, one of the most important coaches and sports figures of the twentieth century. Williams has built on the program that Coach Smith built. Just because they each coached two NCAA champs doesn't mean they are equal in the eyes of history. Williams is a hugely successful coach but Dean Smith is a legend.Recommended but there are better basketball books out there to be read.

By far one of the best books I have ever read concerning the Tar Heel Basketball lineage. Very descriptive and detailed in it's description of collage basketball as a whole. Good Reading.

Hard to believe anyone could make North Carolina basketball boring. Art Chansky has accomplished this monumental task. One assumes this book would get better as you get farther into it. With some of the most phenomenal basketball and coaching talent as source material, this book goes nowhere and stays there. Other than shill for the Democratic party (hope they bought ad space), this book is as bland as a Siler City Saturday night. Maybe Chansky will find a better use for his "talents" writing love letters to the DNC.

The recently released second edition updated by Michael J. Yapko brings Kroger's original text up to date. However, this first edition is enormously valuable in its own right, and is available at a lower cost, so if you're on a budget, this first edition is a terrific value.

Very instructional

I returned this book. I found it outdated, and did not see the many scripts that another reviewer spoke about. If you are looking for an academic book on hypnotherapy, I highly recommend Michael Yapko's Trancework. Yapko wrote the introduction to this book, which is one of the reasons why I bought it, but it turns out that he emphasizes the author's contribution to the field of hypnosis some decades ago, and not the material in the book.

It is a perfect replacement for one lost years ago. Great reference book an guide.

It is a rather dry read (the title of the book should be a clue to this). However it is informative, covers the basics every hypnotherapist should know and then evolves into how to deal with many physical, mental and emotional situations. Covers the human psyche from many angles and thus you will get out of it what you are open to receiving

This book is an extremely useful and pleasant to read thorough review of all apects relating to hypnosis and can be used by professionals who are already certified hypnotherapists as well as laymen. The book is the third in a series that covers the Seleucid Empire. I mention this because the author assumes knowledge of the rise of the empire and its most important leader Antichus III, and does not provide much information on these subjects, assuming that the reader has read the two proceeding books in the series. I did not read these books, as I was already familiar with this material; however, I feel that this book would have benefited greatly from a short (10-20 pages) prologue to bring the reader up to speed. I definitely do not recommend this book to someone who is not familiar with the rise of Seleucid Empire and Antichus III. (Note - the author does not use the typical Latin based transliteration from the Greek, using the letter k instead of c as is used in most other books, and os instead of us, but I am using the spelling of Seleucid rather than Seleuckid and Antichus rather than the author’s spelling Antichos as this conforms to the more common usage.)The book begins in 187 BC, with the reign of Seleucus IV, followed by Antichus IV (the Antichus of the bible). It contains two maps and a chronology of the kings of the Seleucid Empire, starting with Antichus III. The book is well written and is replete with details about numerous battles and dynastic wars that led to the ultimate fall of the empire. The book paints a vivid picture of how and why the empire fell, showing the influence of how these dynastic struggles, and struggles with Ptolemaic Egypt, sapped the empire’s strength, allowing it to fall the Romans and the Parthians. I recommend it to anyone with the aforementioned background knowledge on the rise of the empire and the empire at its peak.

I like how these books fills the gap between the death of Alexander and the zenith of Rome. The Seleucids shapes the Romans and presaged the Byzantines.

Review first posted on Amazon.co.uk on 14 December 2014This is the third and last volume of John Grainger’s history on the Seleucid Empire. It covers a period of a bit more than a century and it is probably the less known (and perhaps also the less studied) part of their history. The book, and the little-known story of the decline of a once-powerful Empire, has several considerable merits, and perhaps also a couple of problems.I have already mentioned the first of these merits. There are few, if any, modern and accessible accounts in English on the last century of the Seleucid Empire.The second merit is to show that the decline and fall was not engineered by Rome, contrary to what is often still believed. One of the qualities of this book is precisely to show that the loss of Asia Minor and the peace treaty that Antiochus III had to sign following his defeat did not cripple his Empire. Asia Minor was not one of the core provinces of the Empire. The clauses of the treaty seem to have been largely ignored by the Seleucid King and his immediate successors and not enforced by the Romans, at least initially. In addition, the last Seleucid king was not deposed by the Romans but by Tigrane, King of Armenia, which was a kingdom that was once a vassal of the Seleucid Empire.The third merit is to identify the root cause of the Fall: the inability to resist and check the expansion of the Parthians, also once a vassal kingdom. However, John Grainger shows that this inability had little to do with military weakness. Instead, he identifies the main cause of the decline and fall as being the breakdown of the normal order of succession by which the King nominated his successor – almost always his eldest surviving son. This lead to multiple bouts of debilitating civil war with the crown becoming up for grabs from whoever commanded sufficient military support to take it. As well shown by the author, the precedent for this was set with the reign of the rather ruthless Antiochus IV Epiphane who displaced and disposed of his much younger nephew whose father had died while he was still young.Another interesting feature is to show to what extent the Jewish sources on the rebellions of the Maccabees can be misleading in several respects. The main point made here is that these rebellions were for a long time mere sideshows for the Seleucids, at least up until they had lost both Media and Mesopotamia, that is two out of the three core regions of the Empire. This left the Seleucids with only the third (Syria), which also started to fragment and was torn by further civil wars between various pretenders to the crown.As mentioned at the beginning of this review, the book also has a couple of problems. The first cannot be blamed on the author and has to do with the rather complex narrative with multiple Kings and pretenders baring the same names and something competing for the throne (several Antiochus, for instance). This can make the book somewhat difficult to read and the story difficult to follow at times, especially for a general reader. A genealogy of the Seleucids partly addresses this point although it unfortunately does not include the dates of reign of the various monarchs.A second, perhaps more controversial, point is one of the ones made in the conclusion. The author does emphasise, and quite correctly, that the Seleucid Empire is the only of the great Hellenistic kingdoms to have suffered a kind of disintegration in slow motion. However, I could not help feeling that explaining this away by simply stating that the Empire was doomed to fail from the start was a bit superficial. Moreover, claiming that such a failure occurred because its power was based on a very narrow Greco-Macedonian population base may also be a bit of an oversimplification, especially if one considers that a large portion of the Seleucid heavy cavalry was made up of Persian and Median nobles.Four stars for a valuable book, even if some of the author’s statements and positions may seem a bit controversial or even questionable at times.

There are better books by better historians. Skip the author. His other books are not much better.
