About the Author

Michael Bockemuhl (1943-2009) studied art history, philosophy and ecclesiastical history in Munich and Bochum. He qualified as a professor in 1984 at the Ruhr University, and lectured in the history of the art of Late Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the early modern age. Great series of artist books offering a general overview of each artist and their work.

Good basic introduction to Turner and his works. Leaves you wanting more.

Any review of this book would have to start out by mentioning the fact that it is part of Taschen’s “Basic Art” series. As such it is only 96 pages in length and most of these 96 pages consist of illustrations of the artist’s work. Hence for anyone seeking a deep and profound academic opus, this is not the book to read. It is instead geared to the layman with little knowledge of the artist who desires to get up to speed in about 2 or so hours. For that reader the book rates a solid four star.The book has many positives. For one, it provides a good overview of the artist’s best and most well known work. The selection of the artist’s work is impressive, especially considering how much the artist has produced. As Turner has over 19,000 paintings and drawings this was no easy task. Putting together this Taschen edition was not as easy as putting together Taschen books that review, say, Vermeer, Bosch and Bruegel the Elder (these artists only have, give or take, about 40 known paintings).In addition, most of the illustrations showing Turner’s work are quite good, especially considering the price of this book. Not great relative to museum quality books that go for $50 to $100 but for a book in the $10 to $15 range very good.The book also provides a decent biography of the artist as well as how his art evolved over time. He started painting and drawing while still a child and his parents, unlike so many parents of artistic children, did not steer him away from it but facilitated and fostered his development in the field. As a 14 year old he was accepted to the Royal Academy and after that he became a master draughtman and painter of literal landscape in the style of Friedrick. He was extraordinary in this regard and acclaimed. Eventually, however, he evolved from this literal style to a more impressionistic. The influence of Goethe’s “Theory of Colors” is evident, as the book makes clear.All and all the book does a good job at both providing a biography of the man as well as discussing and analyzing his style. There are a few weaknesses, however, the prevent this reviewer from granting this book a five-star rating. One is that many of the illustrations are too small. A number are just of thumbnail size, which does not do justice to his paintings. The second is that, even though the illustrations of the paintings are quite good (at least for a book in the $10 to $15 range), the colors are still not as vivid as they should be. A third problem is that the book does not discuss his unique style and technique, as the better books in Taschen’s Basic Art series books do on their subjects. For example, in the book on Watteau the reader learns of that artist’s use of thick brush strokes and in that on Vermeer that artist’s use of the camera obscura. Lastly, the text’s fonts are extremely small and a real strain on the eye. Unquestionably one of the smallest fonts in the Basic Arts series.Nevertheless, despite these weaknesses, the book is still highly recommended, especially given the books price of around $10 to $15.

Mostly illustrations of his work - as expected and desired. Cannot beat the price!

This is a text book for a college course in image editing. I love the Digital Classroom books! I always buy these books for class instead of using the online versions on the university website so I can continue learning these Adobe products on my own time after I finish the class. The included DVD tutorials really help and unlike some other instructional books which provide only online tutorials, these tutorials do not expire.

Very detailed and well written, and coupled with the video tutorials it is an excellent learning tool. I have the Dreamweaver Digital Classroom as well and I think that they are best instructional media that is available.

Due to the detailed step-by-step instructions, tutorials (companion DVD) and full-color photos, I continue to return to this particular training book. It is easy to understand and gives the basis for implementing projects requiring Photoshop assistance. One thing I find advantageous regarding this instructional tool, is that it gives more than just one method of obtaining the same results, so you can choose your favorite process, but know there are other methods as well that you might like to try. You can learn at your own speed and always refer back to a lesson or the enhanced video. There is an entire chapter dedicated to showing you what's new in Photoshop CS6, which is informational for explaining the new brushes, layer panel improvements and other features.

We love almost all the Magic School Bus books, and this is one of the best. In this installment, the bus visits a dinosaur dig, then becomes a time machine (of course) and goes back to find the Maiasaura. But they overshoot the Cretaceous and go back to Late Triassic. Then they work through the different dino periods, meeting different dinosaurs along the way, learning what the Earth looked like then as well as the names of the periods. This actually taught me a few things, and really helps put the dinosaurs into perspective. In that way it's far better than the umpteen zillion books that simply catalogue different dinos--way better than "Oh Say Can You Say Di-no-saur."Another reviewer complained that this book (like all Magic School Bus books) is too "cluttered." I can understand why--I don't like overbusy books either. But this is different. The whole thing is well-thought-out and a lot of the fluff (in the dialogue and the class assignments) earns its way for its value in useful background info or humor.I've read most of the Magic Tree House books to my 3-year-old and he still hasn't gotten tired of them. The books are also very meaty, more than what you would expect from a 45 page book that looks like a cartoon book; they usually take us two or three sittings to get through.

My 3 boys grew up with The Magic School Bus books so when my nephew had a boy (works for girls too!) I knew I had to share the joy! We had many of the books and watched the series on PBS in the 1990's, and subscribed to the kits. My kids always knew more than others about science as they learned so much as small children that they had a great foundation for school. I highly recommend any of the Magic School Bus Books, videos, and kits!

I got this book and there was writing all over the inside of the cover and it even had a phone number. It was all crinkled up and had a tear in one of the pages. I am not overly concerned because it is going into a 3rd grade classroom library and kids are rough on books.

As most MSB books, science and history are presented in a fun, relatable and engaging manner. This was a read aloud to my children, 9 and 6, over a few days as part of a Prehistory Unit. There was material offered in MSB that was not offered elsewhere and the book helped engage the children imaginatively. Great book!

We are big fans of the Magic School Bus series. We have a three year old. He doesn't sit for the entire book all at once. Each page has a ton of information to read and discuss. An older child could probably sit for the whole book but younger ones it may take a few days.

I really wanted to like this book. My son loves dinosaurs, and his reading level fits nicely with the Magic School Bus series. But neither he nor I found this book to be fun reading. The story itself is not that great and you basically have to keep reading things on the side bars that are semi-interesting but disruptive to any flow of the story. I suppose some kids and parents like this style that appears in all the Magic School Bus series. My son and I may be in the minority - but we did not find it that fun. Both of us were happy to be through with the book - it was not particularly riveting - just something to read... and a bit helter-skelter at that. Personally I think that kids at this reading level (1st-2nd grade) enjoy fiction, or an easy to read non-fiction book. This attempt at combining both was just not that enjoyable - at least for us. The Magic Treehouse series (while not my favorite) is more enjoyable reading that his - because the story line is better. IMHO

My nearly 5 year old daughter is dino obsessed and has enjoyed other Magic School Bus books. I surprised her with this set while we were en route during a 2.5 hour car ride. She loved it, following along in the book part of the time, just listening at other times. She wanted the CD on the whole trip, both ways! Just a note that most of the information covered, she already knew, but in that she's quite knowledgable on the subject that's to be expected.

I bought this book for my grandson, age 7, because he loves The Magic School Bus stories and loves dinosaurs, so I knew it would be a hit. It sure was! He asks to read this book over and over. It may be for an age group a little older, but 7 would probably be on the outer edges of the age group for this book. Great pictures!

We bought this encyclopedia because my 6-year-old daughter wanted a textbook about animals. The pictures are vibrant and the factual information is presented in short sentences that don't make her bored or tired of having to read to learn. She loves it and we love reading along with her, too! We also bought DK Publishings' "Ocean: A visual encyclopedia" as well so she has her land animals and ocean animals covered.

Filled to the brim with educational, interesting and fun facts about nearly every type of creature your child would want to learn about. I read reviews on other similar books but see that this was most recommended. I see why. This is so worth buying!!!!!! My 6 year thanked me over and over again for this book!

Great animal book full of photos and info on many animals; our 6 year old grandchild thoroughly enjoys it as we read it together and find many we didn't know about; has nice summaries and quick-facts that make it a great book for her library, which is mainly animals. She has to read slowly and skip certain tougher reading, but great to grow on, identify many animals and have fun doing so. Pictures are great and portray many different varieties of most animals.

My husband and I got each of our nieces and nephews (ages 4-7) this book, and they absolutely love it! It is pretty far above their reading level, but they love the pictures and ask their parents to look things up for them.

Got this for my 10 year old as a simple reference to animals around the world. He spend two weeks looking uup new animals each day and called grampa to see what he knew about said animal.

My daughter received this for Christmas. I enjoy reading about the different animals and looking at the pictures with her. She is 3 and loves learning about the animals.

This book has been my 2-year-old's favorite for several months now, engrossing her for hours at a time. The pictures are fantastic, and the descriptions are fascinating, even for an adult. For example, we learned that apes don't have tails while most monkeys do. This will definitely grow with her!

I ordered 3 animal encyclopedias for our homeschool classroom as we are doing a couple years of Zoology curriculum. This was the one that I picked for our 8 year old daughter. The two things that I like best about this encyclopedia is the colored labels on the right side of the pages that designate "mammals", "birds", "reptiles", etc. Makes it easy for my daughter to find the animal she is looking for. I also like that every animal in the book has the scientific/Latin name underneath the name of the animal in English. The book is FULL of bright, crisp photographs and my daughters love looking through this book! My one complaint is that it is a soft back book and on the first day my daughter used it, the cover and biding pulled away from the pages :( I used some Tacky glue to reattach the spine and there have not been any problems since. It's just not as sturdy at a hard-back book.

Akerlof and Shiller are on the forefront of the behavioral economics movement and outline many key ideas of the movement in this book.They spend most of the book addressing the psychological motivations for the biggest economic crises in the US over the past century and give a refresher course in basic macroeconomics. Throughout their entire discussion, though, the most radical idea they introduce is near the end of the book. They suggest that in order to properly understand macroeconomics, it is essential to discuss the "special poverty among minorities." Or rather, that levels of inequality in a society influence the macroeconomy. This idea is illustrative of the authors' main point on the heavy influence of human psychology on the economy. They craft the argument that the conventional wisdom in economics is flawed because it does not take into account societal constraints and human behavior, which greatly influence the economy.The questions the reader is left with upon finishing the book are: 1. How can we properly include psychology in economic models? 2. To what extent is the government needed to establish the "rules of the game"? The authors emphasize the importance of these topics, but hardly provide prescriptive solutions.Overall, this is a well-written, well-argued book on the topic of behavioral economics and finance. Whether you agree or disagree with Keynesian economics, this text will definitely raise some interesting points.

This book provides an excellent insight in the various elements of human behaviour into the financial markets. It brings together elements of academic studies from both authors and they have proven their worth in the financial and real estate markets (any type of asset). The concepts have a clear pragmatic element and with this book Akerlof and Shiller succeed in popularising their models and academic research. Somehow the reader is left with a feeling that they tried to fit the different parts into one book leaving the reader a bit puzzled when moving from one chapter to another. The book has a bit of an awkward feeling but that does not take away the valuable lessons and insights. By now the elements and details of financial crises of the last decade are fading into the past. The lessons, rightfully, should not and that is the true value of this book.

Well written book that shed lights on the economical issues from a macroeconomic perspective, with the notion of 'animal spirit' and how it influences a person's thinking in common business activities. Wish to have read this book before actually pursuing my MBA degree, nevertheless it left unconventional thoughts that wouldn't be taught in a classroom.

What Keynes means by 'animal spirits' is made a lot clear by the authors. They identified five types of human mental states that constitute animal spirits in humans. The notion of animal spirits is particularly useful in explaining the boom-burst cycles in capitalism and rampant corruption in autocratic states. I really got a lot out of this book. For one thing, I learned the oddities of how economists look at the world due to how economics is taught these days. Wow! I was surprised at the major lack of common sense that seems to trouble the field. No wonder few economists forecasted the 2008 Recession. I also learned a lot more about economics and some of the key factors that drive the economy. I'd read quite a few books about economics before reading Animal Spirits; it's not the first book you should read about economics. But if you're pretty well oriented to economic terms and views, this book injects a lot of common sense into the field of economics. It's by world class economists, including one who won a Nobel Prize in economics. I hope that this will be a seminal book in directing the field of economics into more successful approaches.

Ursula Buchan is an award-winning garden journalist and author of more than 20 years' experience. For the price (even at Amazon's discount) I expected the photos to be a better quality, perhaps a little glossy too. The photos are beautiful but they actually look better on line when you view Amazon's peak inside. In the book the pictures look like the copies I get from an in-jet printer of my old family photos. Not as sharp and clear as the original. If you are looking for inspiration and excellent instructions on how to create an English Garden then I recommend Ursula's other book- "The Ultimate Garden Book For North America." This one is a great coffee table book. You and your guests will enjoy looking at it once in a while. There are phtotos on almost every page. However, I don't think it will be very useful if you want to update or create a new room in your garden.At the end of each chapter there is a list of gardens in England that you can visit for the particular theme.The Chapters are titled as follows:1. The book I purchased from Amazon is exactly as advertised. It is not a scholarly work, but the author knows her subject well, and discusses and explains it in easy-to-read language. Her remarks are appropriate to the purpose of the book. The illustrations fit well with the text and are remarkable in their scope and beauty. It is a very good price for a book of this quality.

A larger coffee table-size book with beautiful, colorful photographs of a variety of English gardens, it has interesting, easily readable descriptions/details of each garden and its history. For all who love England, gardens, and inspiring ideas, it's the perfect book!

I received my book the day prior to the projected delivery date in top class condition.I must let everyone know if you happen to love gardens then this is one book you must have. The pictures are just astonishingly beautiful and those who put this book together have taken great care in ensuring the location of these incredible gardens (true works of art) is clear for the reader to see.A wonderful wonderful book!!!

It is a really nice book, well made, bright colors. The only drawback was that I was hoping for a more European feel.

The only thing lacking were photos of Renishaw Hall's gardens! Especially the follies! But a great start on a broad subject. :)
