I've read a number of Girard's books but this was the most enlightening about a number of topics that his other writings leave a little obscure. It's comparable to his essay on Dostoevsky in that regard. The idea of seeing all of the works that adopt the mimetic perspective as a single work that deals with increasingly difficult elements of the mimetic cycle is very helpful. The only problem is that there isn't yet an eBook version, and the typeface on the hardback is pretty small. Hopefully they'll produce an eBook version soon, as well as one for *Deceit, Desire, and the Novel* and *Things Hidden*.

Do not fail to read this book if you love Shakespeare and want some understanding of what his work as a whole is about. Let me carefully explain why.Girard has a few devoted followers and very few adversaries. His bold interpretation of western literature (lets put aside his entire mimetic theory for a moment) is so far away from everything else in literary theory that other scholars find it very difficult to elaborate a refutation - they would have to re-examine too much that is taken for granted and that is the basis for all literary criticism, old and contemporary. So most of the disagreement with Girard is short and dismissive, rather than a careful critique.This is indeed a very regrettable situation. Girard`s study is too decisive to be treated as a footnote, and too persuasive to be dismissed. If he is correct, than he found the key to interpret all great western literature. We know that Shakespeare, Dostoyevsky and Cervantes, not to mention the Greek tragedians, are somehow set apart from other writers in that they provide a superior portrait of human condition, but little has been done to explain why. Why are Don Quixote and Hamlet so outstanding? I think only Girard elaborated an answer. And it is a very disturbing one. Scholars and non-scholars have a natural reaction to dislike the idea that the characters in great literature are so universal because they show how non-autonomous people are, rather than the opposite.But one must take Girard`s ideas seriously. In the case of this book, how can one dismiss the mountain of evidence Girard presents to prove that Shakespearean characters are slaves to other people's desires? How can one read this book and not treat this hypothesis seriously? Because if you do, and if you end up agreeing with it, you may feel like a fool - all the literary critics you ever read, and their respective schools of thought, and the institutions to which they belong - become almost redundant and peripheral, and this relatively little-known dude from Stanford acquires an immense importance. Even the individual reader feels like silly because he missed something so ubiquitous. So in a way, Girard`s mimetic theory explains Rene Girard's relative obscurity.So there is greater benefit in reading Theater of Envy if you are NOT an English major, and have read a lot more Shakespeare than commentary about Shakespeare. You will have a lot less prejudice, and you will be flabbergasted by Girard demonstrating over and over again what that body of work is about.One other thing of interest is: if you are already acquainted with the mimetic theory (and I strongly recommend you read Deceit, Desire and the Novel before tackling this one), you already know a lot of what the author is going to say (assuming you are acquainted with the Bard`s plays). For example, much of what the Chapter on Hamlet contains I already knew would be there, just by applying Girard`s theory to a play I knew well. And I could probably write myself a couple of extra chapters to this book, tackling Henry VI parts II and III, two very "mimetic" plays Girard left out for some reason. Actually, it is interesting that there is only one chapter on Hamlet, a play that corroborates so much of Girard`s theory, and two on As You Like It, a play where the mimetic desire appears little. Girard wants to go for the difficult stuff, the elements in Shakespeare that apparently contradict him, so that we will be all the more persuaded. Why insist on Hamlet and Othello if the reader will easily be convinced himself?One last reason to read this book. Girard is a great writer, period. His prose and his clear presentation make it a delightful read. The only obstacle to reading this book is complete unfamiliarity with Shakespeare - I skipped the chapter`s on Winter`s Tale because I know nothing about that play other than the title. Other than that, reading Deceit Desire and the Novel first is a very good idea, but not indispensable if you are a Shakespeare buff. I suspect you will probably jump to reading more Girard afterwards anyways.

Incredible insight into Shakespeare and even what undergirds a lot of relational conflict. I used four Shakespeare critics in college classes, and this was my favorite (over Van Doren's "Shakespeare", Bloom's "The invention of the human", and Lightheart's "Brightest heaven of invention").It's hard to know if Girard's theory is right, but in the very least, it gives great insight into life. Once you read about mimetic desire, you won't be able to stop seeing it in other books and people around you!

Much great thinking about the plays, but very single minded focus and quite judgmental of anyone with a different view.

This is one of my favorite books of all time, and changed my assessment of Shakespeare, actually increasing my opinion of his genius. This is the first of 3 Girard books I have read, and perhaps the best. His insightful analysis will make future Shakespearean reviews seem superficial. This book is exciting enough to get us to head over to the Stratford , Ontario summer theater to see The Winter's Tale live, which Girard says is Shakespeare's greatest achievement. ( I suggest the Folger Shakespeare Library edition. )

A tired premise which foregrounds the author's incomplete understanding of the Shakespeare which doesn't agree with the premise. Yet some who read and found this the cat's meow when originally published, still promote it with out regard to 25 years of academic discourse.

Ok, this book was good. It was fun and well written. It wasn’t the book I wanted though.This one marks a shift in the narrative where the dungeon is a secondary character to the humans. The story is shifting to make the human the main characters and ultimate hero of the series, which while not a bad thing in general, isn’t what made me love the series. This is the first book in the series that I really have no desire to re-read.

Seriously. Meant to read a chapter or two and it is now nearly dawn.This work stands among the top-most tier of quality dungeon core lit. Entertaining, engaging, and impossible to put down.If you've read the previous in this series and are debating this one then stop your foolish dawdling and go allocate the rest of your day for this. If you are new to this author then start at the beginning rather than here but by all means start. You. Will. Not. Regret. It.Now for some coffee to go with this good book buzz. Too late/early to sleep now.

I enjoyed the book and story. I will most likely have to go back and read again I feel I missed some on humor that other people talk about in the reviews. This story continues to build up the characters and dungeon.The thing that lost the star for me was the 3rd act plot change and the effectively cliffhanger ending. While it was a good book after finishing a first read through I stopped and thought I just re-read one of the previous books but with a higher setting. That feeling is why I dropped 1 star on what was an excellent book in all other regards.

I had to make the Cal joke; sorry.This was AMAZING. The only thing I didn't like is that it wasn't longer and I had to wait as long as I did to get it.The fantastic storytelling returns with Cal, Dale, and the rest of the folks that inhabit Mountaindale! Twists, turns, intrigue, puns, more puns, and a few developments that I don't think anyone could have seen coming. Hard to put down and I am honestly wondering how the author can top this.As with the prior books, the various systems continue to expand and yet remember their roots. I've seen other authors change the way their mechanics work, but not here. Divine Dungeon book 4 keeps with what it has established and continues to build upon it. It's like it has a strong foundation, gives off a solid aura, and knows how to cultivate its surroundings and grow stronger for it...I was more than a little surprised at the very end and have no idea what to expect from the eventual sequel. I will, of course, keep an open mind but Dakota has set himself on a rather interesting route forward.Can't wait!

This fourth book is, I think, the last in the series. At the end I was a little sad for what the future entailed. "Is it over already? Is that what will happen in the world?", I thought.First, let me begin by saying the dungeon and the wisp are originally a little flat in the beginning of book 1, but as the story progresses, and the dungeon tries to save the wisp, you really become attached to their relationship, and in this book, they had some hilarious interactions. I literally laughed aloud when I read the dungeon trying to carry out some idioms inside his dungeon:)Regarding the negative reviews about this book shifting to the perspective of the humans, I didn't think that was the case at all. When people read this book, they should have known that there were two perspectives: the dungeon and the human. Since there is a war, it is only natural for the humans and dungeon to fight together to defeat evil.However, the plot shift that did surprise me happened about 75% in, when the villain shifted. There was no warning that this would happen, no hint to let us be genuinely surprised. It happened as rather "Oh, I thought of this at the last minute." There should have been at least some subtle buildup to let us know what would happen.Xenocide's son was left out of the plot near the end, and since this feels like the end to the series, I'm pretty sure that's a big plot hole, which could have been fixed with a single sentence or two.Another thing that didn't make sense was when a woman that had constantly hated another man ... married him. The author said that her constant hate of him actually meant that she liked him. In real life, no does not always mean yes. This kind of reinforces stereotypes. "Jerks" are not secretly nice.

This is one hell of a great addition to the dungeon series that Dakota has built. I love the character progression throughout this story and the strife and pain that everyone feels hits home with a level of emotion that has you sitting on the edge of your seat wanting more right up until the end of the story.I can't recommend this story enough to everyone am because of how well it is wrote and engaging it is. I wasnt able to put this book down until I finished it.Dale and Cal go on another crazy and harrowing adventure together in this story and at no point is it safe to be able to put the book down. So many characters are well developed and included in this story and shown with a depth that not many other writers in this genre have the ability to reproduce. This story is a masterpiece and needs to be read.

Another very fun story following Dale and Cal as they do their best to survive. I was a little sad at the general tone of the interactions between them, figuring it would be more of a friendly buddy cop style relationship rather than the existing one, but otherwise I enjoyed the character growth a lot and the plot twist at the end was surprising in its own wayNot the end result of Cal's project. To be honest the regular comments of "that's someone else's problem" kind of give it away (plus the book title), but Dale's meeting should have been obvious but wasn't.Fun little meme prices here and there as nods to Reddit, and it was just fun. If you are reading book 4 you have read the other 3 so in summary, well worth it.

I use this series for 2nd grade reading groups. They love the Greetings from Somewhere Books! They always want to just read one more chapter. We incorporate the travel the brother and sister go on with social studies.Wonderful books with nice illustrations to go along with the stories.

My 4th grade class loves this series, especially the multicultural aspect of the stories. Great addition to my class library.

My 4-year old daughter and I can tear through a "Greetings from Somewhere" book in an hour or two. We buy the newest ones as soon as they're available. They're fun reads, wholesome, and we love that they introduce different areas of the world to my child.

We purchased this guide for our vacation travel in South Dakota. It provided helpful information on sites and attractions. However, the organization was not so helpful to me, with chapters organized by parks, family, etc. It was hard to find the highlights and really important things. The chapters on relocation, education, child care, health care, retirement and media were not helpful at all for me as a vacation traveler. I probably will not buy an "Insider's Guide" again, and instead will stick with Fodors, Moon, or another guide.

I have found this travel guide to be absolutely useless because of the content organization. Rather than having chapters focus on a particular area or city in the Black Hills, each chapter topic, ie Accomodations, Attractions, Shopping etc, includes information for the entire region. Thus if one wishes to read about a specific city, for example, Deadwood, one must sort through every chapter in the book to get a complete picture of what is avaliable.I puchased this book several years ago when we made our first trip to the Black Hills, but we did not use it. I should have tossed it out. This spring we are returning for another visit, so I pulled the book out, forgetting that it hadn't worked as a guide for us. After again trying to use the book for travel research I put it aside. Perhaps this guidebook organization will work for some, but I found it cumbersome and confusing.

We're going on vacation to the black hills this year and find this book very valuable in helping to find some of the out of the way sites that we enjoy.

This book is even more than I expected - really great. Came promptly, in perfect condition. Very satisfied!

This book is awesome for trip-planning. I unfortunately paid cover price at a local brick-n-mortar bookstore, but I wanted to see all the brands of travel guides in person to pick one. The others available definitely lacked compared to this one - and for the same price. I'll know from now on I can always trust this series. The front has some basic maps to get you started, and the first few chapters are history and "the natural world" of the region. The following chapters split information into common-sense sections, such as "accommodations", "restaurants", "attractions", etc. Even "nightlife" (for the young couple) and "kidstuff" (for family vacations) and even a chapter listing annual festivals by the month they typically take place in! Each detailed entry includes the name, adderess, phone number, web address, approx price, and operation hours of the business/location. Much of the info is contributed by locals so you really get a feel for the place. Even better, in each chapter the info is split into regions. In this case, "northern hills", "central hills" and "southern hills" which I really like. I discovered most of what we want to do is in the central and southern hills, so I looked under "accomodations" at cabins to rent only in those regions.The best part of all are all kinds of 'did you know' entries with historical information about various places to see. Everything from how the cave system was formed (and how they keep them clean!), to American Indian war history, to 19th century natural disasters, to the infamous Wall Drug and Sturgis motorcycle rally. I plan to read some of this aloud to the kids before we get to each location, so we can enjoy the sights without having to read all the history pamphlets.Also included are things to do around the region, including eastern WY, central SD, northern NE. There are also chapters on relocation, education, child care, health care, retirement, and media, but I haven't touched those since we are obviously planning a vacation.

This book is great. Easy to understand and indepth explanations. I recommend you have prior computer knowledge or experience before reading this book (maybe read through the Linux in a Nutshell book first or CompTIA A+ certification guide) though the first chapter is based strictly on getting you started and up to datw with Linux. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants the learn Kali Linux.

This is an excellently written, and interesting technical resource book for learning and relearning Kali. The writing is concise and useful for new learners and old security hands in information Assurance. The book has considerable utility in teaching pen testing methods and best practices. The price and value proposition is excellent. Highly recommended

This is the second book in a row I was really excited about getting from O'reilly that has a botched print job. All of the screen shots are stretched to be page width which pixelates them and makes them unreadable.The first book was Jenkins 2: Up and Running: Evolve Your Deployment Pipeline for Next Generation Automation. The problem made that book unusable.I even printed all the images in a 75 page document to keep with the book so I could reference it. That didn’t work because there was no way to find them by page number or figure numbers.This book does not have nearly the number of screenshots in it, so it’s not that bad. No stars deducted.Since Kali’s release I have wanted to learn more about using it. I don’t know how many times I have downloaded, but I can tell you my interest was usually sparked by a new book release. A few chapters into each of the past books and I lost interest.This book is different. The author’s writing style makes this book easy to stick with. He combines the right amount of information about Kali to help you concentrate on learning the tools. Many of the past books just hit the tools and left you floundering if you are not a regular Linux or Unix user.He also does a great job of explaining what it is you are about to attack. An example of what I mean is that when he introduces Web Application Test in Chapter 8, he first covers web application architecture, how the different components play a part (e.g. web server, application server, database server, firewall, loader balancer, etc.).Over all this book has been a blast to read and will be my go-to reference for Kali tools in the future.

If you're familiar with computing generally, especially Linux, and want to know about Kali, this is a solid introduction to a complex subject and the author explains all the major topics very clearly. It's obviously an enormous topic but the book successfully navigates the areas that a newcomer will want to understand and provides plenty of learning resources for going further on any given area. As another reviewer has noted, the screenshot quality isn't great but doesn't really impact the reader greatly. I'd highly recommend this for anyone interested in ethical hacking or security.

There are a number of excellent Linux Distros for people involved with network security and computer forensics. Kali is intended primarily for security specialists, but it is also useful to computer forensics practitioners like me. The writing style is clear and pretty concise. Examples are good, but as with any distro, there could always be more. Overall, a valuable addition to my computer forensics library.Jerry
