This book was IT.It fed my intellect and nourished my mind.Carl Jung is a Father on my intellectual journey. I go back to consult him when I feel pathless. And he never disappoints. He is patient, knowing (real knowing- not a fake), mythical, and scientific.

How could a book by Carl Jung about Carl Jung not be fascinating? But he was hard to follow throughout parts of the book. His mental inner workings go deeper than I've ever read and, as good writing does, left me with a sense of being known on a much deeper level myself. I loved his ability to objectively observe and articulate spirituality but found it a bit dry a couple of times, being that I have a life of experiencing spirituality, as I know everyone does firsthand to at least some degree, is, I wished to read more about this by him. But it was his life's work to do it more analytically. I recommend it for the patient reader with an interest in what I've mentioned as well as good comprehension skills.

I loved this book for the honest way Jung writes about himself. He is refreshingly different from most autobiographies in general and autobiographies of psychologists and psychiatrists in particular. Most personal books I've read by psychologists are full of suspicious anecdotes about how their always brilliant insights saved one patient after another while living an amazingly perfect life of happiness and endless joy. There is none of that in Jung's autobiography. Here is an example of how he viewed his life taken from his summing up at the end of the book:"The older I have become, the less I have understood or had insight into or known about myself. I am astonished, disappointed, pleased with myself. I am distressed, depressed, rapturous. I am all these things at once, and cannot add up the sum. I am incapable of determining ultimate worth or worthlessness; I have no judgment about myself and my life. There is nothing I am quite sure about. I have no definite convictions–not about anything, really. I know only that I was born and exist, and it seems to me that I have been carried along. I exist on the foundation of something I do not know. In spite of all uncertainties, I feel a solidity underlying all existence and a continuity in my mode of being. "

A genius reveals his soul. By far the most important thinker I've read, yet human enough to show his humanity. Never claiming divinity, he brought us close to the spiritual doorways, and his book is the best introduction to the man and his inspired thoughts. I have his full Collected Works, but this book is the starting place. I am reading it for the third time.

I dont have to understand everything in the book to be aware that I was given many great insights. There are lots of things I always wondered about in my own life, and Jung and Jaffe provided many answers to how things fit together. My own myth about God and the unseen realm has been greatly augmented. Please read!

Great book for anyone interested in learning about Carl Jung. Carl was way ahead of his time, extremely intelligent and insightful. I picked up some excellent key points that has helped me see things from a better point of view. I'm barely a casual reader, so this book was a bit difficult for me to read at times. There is a lot of talk and reference to religions and cultures from all over the world which was quite a bit difficult for me to read as I am unfamiliar with most of the reference and wording, thankful for google! Regardless, I enjoyed reading about Carl and his life and felt a benefit from reading this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this unusual autobiography of Carl Jung, one of the truly original thinkers of the twentieth century. Rather than write a conventional autobiography, Jung decided, in this book, to explore how he came to be interested in the workings of the unconscious and the systematic study of its manifestations. He takes us on a journey that begins with his psychological perceptions during childhood, continues with his adult studies and synchronic experiences, and travels onward to his later "near-death experience" (as we might now call it) and his mature views on a various psychic phenomena. For those already interested in Jung or curious about his life, this book would be a fascinating read. It is a text to enjoy with an open mind, despite one's own belief system, in order to experience more fully the possibilities that Jung suggests.I highly recommend this book and have already read parts of it more than once. It is that interesting.

This is a great book for any one interested in psychology and especially those fascinates by Jung and his practice of psychoanalysis. It provides great insight into his mind, his passion for his work, and most of his theories. A wonderful account of his journey as a man and as a scientist that tracks his own development since childhood and relates his curious intuitions to his abstract and often mystical theoretical conclusions.

I bought this as a gift - it was smaller in size then I expected but I thought it very cute - it is for a baby boy's baptism - I didn't have much $$ - but I wanted to get him something so that as he gets older he remembers and he knows that somebody from the church cared enough to get him something and that he is not only loved by God/Jesus - but he is loved in the church - him and his parents (especially his mom and grandma who are both my friends)

I purchased one of these for my grandson and was tickled to death with it when it arrived. I liked it so well, I immediately ordered another one for my other grandson (his little brother). Most baby's bibles are simply small regular bibles with tiny print, some just have the New Testament. Those are nice little keepsakes, but I don't consider them practical for actual use. Babies have notoriously short attention spans. This thin little bible is perfect for reading to a little one and introducing them to the Word without overwhelming them. You could call it a summary of bible highlights. Starting with God creating light and moving through to the NT, each page has a short one or two line rhyme that describes an important point in the bible with a charming illustration on the facing page.

This bible is so cute! The pages contain short poems of each major biblical story. My kids (ages 10 months to 5 years) love listening to the rhymes, and it's such an easy read! This will definitely be a keepsake.

Cute but overly simple even for a baby. Leaves a lot out. And as he gets older and asks questions about the little bits provided, you’d need to be fairly well versed in the full version of the Bible to be able to fill in all the blanks.

smaller than I was expecting.Still nice.I gave three stars because it arrived later than promised. This was one of two items as a Baptism gift and it didn't arrive until two days after the occasion. I was disappointed.

I bought this for my son thinking its somewhat close to the real bible. Just a little book with rhymes.

This is small but colorful illustrations and poems make it perfect for a child. Pages are paper, not cardboard for a baby. Though a baby would enjoy the sound of reading.

love the short stories, just the right length for toddlers short attention span:-)

#41 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

My 19 month old daughter now recognizes Elmo and so I thought getting a potty themed book to introduce her to the idea of going to the potty would be great. However, I was disappointed when I got the book because even though it says it is targeted for ages 1-3, it is not well written for that age group. P is for Potty sounds like a board book that would be simple, direct, and to the point, so I was surprised when I opened it up and saw paragraphs. I wish I had seen some previews of the book to realize that it is not a good intro to potty training book for the younger set. My daughter likes looking at the pictures and lifting the flaps, but she cannot sit through reading each page (she becomes impatient to turn the page). The biggest issue I have with this book is that it is too long and there is so much dialogue, making it harder for a child my daughter's age to follow along (There is so much Elmo says "...." and Albie says "....." and Elmo's mommy says "...."). It may have worked better if the author simply told the story instead of all the "talking" by different characters. It also doesn't have the word repetition that you find in other toddler board books. I also felt there was something about the vocabulary used in the book that made it more complicated than other books targeted for the 1-3 year old range. In my opinion that storyline is too long and there is too much going on for a 1-3 year old to follow, especially if you want it to be an introduction to potty training (versus a storybook for a child who is at the tail end of potty training and has the occasional accident). Here is the storyline/plot: Elmo and his mom are babysitting Elmo's cousins, Albie and baby Jo Jo. The baby is fussing because he is wet and needs a diaper change. He gets a diaper change while Albie announces twice that he used to wear diapers but is now learning to use the potty. They have lunch and then Elmo uses the big toilet in the bathroom and they show the steps (wiping, flushing, washing hands). Albie doesn't need to use the little potty. They play in the sandbox and then Albie has an accident and changes into dry clothes. He is reassured by Elmo's mom that it is ok. Later, Albie successfully uses the little potty. Then Albie gets picked up by his mom and tells her all about his day.In terms of the quality of the book, the pages are much thinner than the typical board book. As others have mentioned, even though it now has over 30 flaps to lift, they are unrelated to the potty and the storyline, and are really just an added distraction if you are wanting to use this book as an educational tool about potty training. They are great activities for learning "before and after" (for example, a lamp that is off and then you flip the tab and it is now on or blocks that are stacked up high and you flip the flap and they are knocked over). In conclusion, had I seen a copy of this book before I purchased it (such as a "look inside" preview that some books have on Amazon), I wouldn't have purchased this for my daughter. I've included some photos of the inside of the pages so that others can take a glance before they decide to purchase.

My big one loves it (3) and my little one (20 months) loves to read with us and look under all the flaps. Here is a tip mommies! About a month ago, my son was 3 years and 2 months. He didn't want to go on the potty. One of his friends came over and his mom and I had a cup of coffee. She told me that when her son was 2 1/2, she took him to day care one day and they told her that the next day to bring in SIX PAIRS OF UNDIES AND SIX FULL CHANGES OF CLOTHES because there would be no more diapers. They said pull ups don't work bc the kids just think they are diapers. The trick is to make them feel the wet. It gets cold on them and they don't like it. I was scared to ruin my rugs and furniture but I figured what the heck! So, the next day, I put him in his undies that I had eagerly bought on his 2nd birthday (hahahaha). He peed in them and came to be devasted "mommy!!! I am WET!!!! I need a bath! I am STICKY!!"I put him in the bath and threw his clothes in our other tub (figured that I would let a few sets pile up and then do a load). When he got out, he got fresh undies and fresh clothes, of course. He tried to ask for a "diapee" and I explained "nope this is it from now on. You can go on the potty and stay dry or poop and pee in your clothes and get sticky and cold and wet".About an hour later, my husband walked into our bathroom and he was SITTING ON THE TOILET WITH A POOP IN THE POTTY! We wiped his butt. Told him that we were so proud (he loves this and now asks every time "are you proud?". He got to pick a treat out of the treat bucket (left over Halloween Candy, lol) and he gets to stick a sticker on my wall in my bathroom (it is shiny paint so easy to remove). And that was it. He went pee and poop all on his own. I had my hubby teach him how to push his "winkie" to shoot in the toilet. He goes pee on the big potty and poop on his little potty on the floor. He comes and gets up (carrying the poop in the removable potty bowl - which is totally gross) and he is so proud and we go in and wipe him and clean the potty after he dumps it in his big potty. We did make one mistake. He had gymnastics the 3rd day and we put him in pullups bc we didn't want him to poop on the other little gymnasts :)!!! This kind of backed us up and he was wetting his underpants a bunch of times a day for a few days but we just didn't make a big deal about it and he eventually chose to stay dry on his own. He still makes mistakes but he knows where his undies are so he will strip and throw his wet clothes in the bathtub in his bathroom (he gets embarrased I think and doesn't want to be ridiculed for a mistake - which i get so it is fine with me). and then he goes and gets his underpants from his closet shelf and puts them on. He does fine at night.I am posting this for the mommies who are buying this book because they have talked about potty training with their little one but they aren't budging. I really hope this helps!!! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions :) vanostrandsamantha@gmail.comGood Luck and I Wish You Lots of Dry Underpants!!!! GOD Bless you :)

My 21mo toddler boy loves Sesame Street and we’ve started potty training-I didn’t expect too much from this book and was still disappointed.Don’t recommend for toddlers in toilet training.•The wording is confusing, long, drawn out, hard to follow.•The lift up flaps are very thin paper-cardboardish, hard to open and rip, tear. Frustrating for a toddler. Not made for their chubby little hands, fingers.Once the flaps are opened, they don’t close. On the plus side:Bright and fun pictures. (Make up your own story to go with the pictures and your toddlers needs)Tons of flaps to lift and peep (tear) -it’s very cute, but not made for chubby toddlers fingers. It’s a challenging. (this book and toilet training, why add to the toddlers frustration?)

There are cool little flaps to open, which is a fun concept. But I hate reading this book. It's not much of a story, and the way it's written isn't very creative or interesting or fun, and I don't think it does a very good job of focusing on the potty in a useful way for my child. I'm trying to get my 2.5 year old toddler interested in starting to potty train, and this book really doesn't inspire any interest in trying the potty. Maybe this would be better for an older kid who is already potty training and having some setbacks. I don't know. All I know for sure is that this book "disappeared" after a couple of weeks because I don't ever want to read it again. I've had much better results and experiences from "Big Girl Panties" by Fran Manushkin, "Potty" by Leslie Patricelli, and "The Potty Book for Girls" by Alyssa Satin Capucilli.Edit: Also, the title is completely irrelevant to the book. Don't expect any reference to the alphabet.

We used this book in combination with Risk Steeves's brief book (or extended booklet) and a fabulous and indestructible Rough Guide map. We already knew where we wanted to stay, so our focus was on understanding the history of Barcelona, prioritizing the sites we would see (and taking in those sites in a sane way), and getting lost only in the best of ways. The Cadogan guide was outstanding for the first of these things especially and made a solid dent in the second (especially where background details were concerned). The maps were merely OK -- good for exploring a specific neighborhood but not for cross-neighborhood navigation. The Metro map in the back, on the other hand, was perfect and extremely useful. But we didn't buy this book for its maps. The authors are clearly familiar with the area and possess a witty yet informative writing style. We loved the area and if we can manage to return, we will bring this book along for the journey. Would give 4.5 stars if it were possible.

This is only for those of you who do not need pictures. Cadogan guides don't do pictures. The maps by region (often times very small regiosn) are the most useful. The layout features related regions and driving within them. One can find often obscure and potentially important sites not covered in other guides which only touch on the really high spots. This gets to the folkways of a region in powerful citations. I have never been steered worng by a Cadogan guide. This is the second copy of this guide I have owned. I gave away the last one. Yes Barcelona is wonderful BUT the places covered in this book reveals a whole different cultural guide; one fundamental to the identity of Barcelona but so much more. Don't miss out on this it goes way beyond the pretty picture books.

Before and After Loss: A Neurologist's Perspective on Loss, Grief, and Our Brain (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)

Review

"This poetic and insightful, if heartbreaking, memoir from neurologist Lisa M. Shulman stems from her own bereavement of her late husband... Combined with the latest scientific studies in traumatic brain injury and holistic approaches to healing, Shulman has created a unique book that touches on all aspects of the process of grieving―the psychological, physiological, and overlap between neurology and psychiatry. Ultimately, Shulman points out that whether brain injury is caused by physical or emotional trauma, it results in similar long-term effects―and also that post-traumatic stress can become post-traumatic growth, with the right tools. In short, it could prove to be an invaluable aid to counselors, psychotherapists, and medical doctors, as well as anyone moving through grief toward wholeness." (Lauren LaRocca Baltimore Magazine)"A masterpiece. This important, richly heartening book will be a tremendous resource for those experiencing loss and grief, as well as those working with people who are experiencing loss and grief." (Christine Way Lynn, MSW, LICSW, Capitol Hill Center for Individual and Family Therapy)"The book's combination of storytelling, insights, education, research, and suggested strategies will appeal to a broad audience interested in the science behind grief. Dr. Shulman’s offering advances our understanding of how the brain impacts grief." (Laurel Goodrick, LCPC, NCC, CT, Gilchrist Hospice Care)"Dr. Shulman has written a touching and informative memoir about grief. This book manages to balance science with an intimate, compassionate voice that allows easy access to her extensive experience and wisdom. I highly recommend this to people who have lost a loved one and are feeling the confusion and bewilderment that often accompanies loss." (Sameet Kumar, author of Grieving Mindfully: A Compassionate and Spiritual Guide to Coping with Loss)"Had Dr. Shulman's book only been an eloquent and moving account of how she approached her husband's death and the grief that followed, it would have been well worth reading. But in taking us deep into the science of grief, she also enlightens us, and normalizes grief as evolution's way of enabling our survival in the face of traumatic loss." (Susan Dentzer, President and CEO, Network for Excellence in Health Innovation)"Dr. Shulman has found a way to make the concept of emotional trauma more tangible, explaining the emotional experiences related to loss and healing through neurological physical functions and the psychological purpose each symptom serves. This bravely intimate and scholarly work provides a unique guide for all of us in our healing journeys." (Christine Moutier, MD, Chief Medical Officer, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention)"Before and After Loss is remarkable. Having worked to improve care of those who are seriously ill and dying and their families for four decades, I have never read another manuscript like it. This book will be a touchstone for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one." (Myra Christopher, Center for Practical Bioethics (retired))"A courageous and formative work. Dr. Shulman's intimate account and search for answers creates a recipe of sensible ingredients honoring the deeply personal experience and transformative power of loss and grief. And she serves it all up with scientific sizzle." (Susan Schneider Williams, fine artist and wife of Robin Williams)

I initially got this book out of the library and appreciated it so much that I knew I had to have my own copy. I'm in a similar situation which made the book, in some instances, a little hard to read. At the same time, I found it a very important book in that the author couples her personal experiences with the findings of a medical researcher. I have recommended this book to other caregivers, to two people who recently experienced loss, to health care providers, and to a funeral home director. For anyone experiencing the before and/or the after of loss, or are seeing it in loved ones, patients, or clients, this book is a must-have, in my opinion.

Interesting take on grief.

Great handbook for some situations, not all, such as dementia & sudden loss.

Dr. Shulman's book goes beyond an academic explanation of the neurological impact of traumatic loss by placing scientific understanding within the context of her own intensely personal bereavement experience: the untimely death of her husband from cancer. She strikes the perfect balance between memoir and scientific discussion of a phenomenon that touches us all.Although Dr. Shulman touched on the role of religion at the end of the book as a tool for comfort to grieving individuals, I was surprised that she discussed so much about bereavement without even a word about soul, spirit, other side experiences, or questions of "where we go" when we die. Given the explosion of mainstream interest in afterlife phenomena in the past few decades (eg, near-death experiences, evidential medium communication, reincarnation), it was surprising that she did not consider the role of these experiences in processing the death of loved ones. For example, her otherwise brilliant discussion of dreams as unconscious attempts at integration of loss into one's identity assumes the dreamer is operating in a "closed system" and does not even consider the possibility that the soul or spirit of the deceased may have the capability of interacting with the bereaved in some way. I found that odd, since so many grievers claim to have special dreams about their deceased loved ones that are "more than" the many "normal" dreams they have about them, dreams that feel more like "visitations." Dr. Shulman mentions an experience in which she "feels" her dead husband crawl in bed next to her; her explanation that this was a "tactile dream" was not credible to me. Such an experience begs the question that perhaps the dead, in some ethereal form, can visit the living; as a scientist, why does she rule out such a possibility?Back in the 1950's, doctors routinely rejected any patient experiences that were outside the realm of materialistic science and discouraged patients from reporting NDE's, death-bed visions, crisis apparitions, or after-death communication. But after sixty years of work in this area by legitimate researchers (eg, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Raymond Moody, Ian Stevenson, Bruce Greyson, Jim Tucker, Bill & Judy Guggenheim), theoretical debates on consciousness outside the brain, and popular books (eg, Eben Alexander, Anita Moorjani), it is amazing that Dr. Shulman does not even mention the possible role of such phenomena, vis à vis brain activity, in bereavement experience.Yes, I get it, maybe it's beyond the scope of Dr. Shulman's book. But tactile dreams? That sounds ridiculous as the only explanation offered for her experience! I've never had a tactile dream, have you? I've dreamt of my mother hundreds of times since her death decades ago, but only ONE that I would describe as a visitation, two weeks after she passed. Why was that one different? Dr. Shulman may be letting down her readers who must make due with a closed-system explanation of such an experience that ignores the possibility of the supernatural.

Done!!I truly enjoyed listening to Dr. Shulman’s book on Audible. The story of the author’s journey was beautifully written, and artfully read by the narrator. I was inspired by the way Dr. Shulman and her late husband thoughtfully cared for each other until the end. I felt privileged to hear the intimate details of their story. The analysis of the emotional, social and physical changes one goes through in life after loss was also very interesting. The author describes many of her feelings and experiences with grief, and then pairs them with sound scientific explanations. I am glad I read this book, and I am certain that I’ll circle back to it for comfort and guidance in the future.

For anyone who has experienced a traumatic loss (or cares about someone who has) this book has so much to offer. First, Dr Shulman shares a nuanced narrative of her own traumatic loss. Then, she describes her experiences through the eyes of a curious scientist-practitioner. So glad I read this book! As a school psychologist, It will help me to better understand and describe symptoms of trauma and adaptive coping mechanisms to my own students.

A wonderful read for anyone going through a loss and looking for a different and unique perspective. Also makes a great holiday gift for the right person! Highly recommend!

Well I am not quite sure that the book gave me a lot of hope. Well it was honest and open and made sense but it wasn’t a rainbow filled happy ending.
