(from the introduction) We are passionate, nay zealous about public higher education. And we are radical adherents to the idea that land-grant universities, based as they are on the ideals put forward by Senator Justin Morrill, President Abraham Lincoln, and the other social and political giants of their time, continue to set the bar for performance excellence in the realm of public higher education. We are, you might say, fiercely land-grant in our orientation. Yet we are also rather matter-of-fact in our assessment that not all is well in land-grant land these days. How exactly did your authors arrive at this place and time to both extol the virtues of land-grant institutions while simultaneously examining their warts? By explanation, we begin this book with our personal land-grant stories, the transformative events from our lives that,in combination, brought us together to write this homage and critique of the land-grant university. After these personal vignettes, we provide our readers with a brief description of the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis that we conducted through interviews with 27 of the presidents and chancellors of the 1862 land-grant universities located in the 48 continental United States. To a person, these presidents and chancellors were brimming with enthusiasm about the strengths and opportunities of present-day land-grant universities, just as surely as they were deeply concerned about some of the weaknesses and threats facing these institutions of higher learning. Next, we include some critical commentary about the political climate within which these interviews were conducted. We had contact with approximately half of the presidents and chancellors in the months preceding the 2016 U.S. presidential election, with the remainder interviewed after Donald Trump was declared the electoral victor over Hillary Clinton. The impact of the campaigns that these candidates had chosen to run were significant and unmistakable for many of the presidents and chancellors we interviewed. We believe there are many important lessons to be extracted from the electoral process and its aftermath that can serve as teachable moments for land-grants and other public universities, and we provide some preparatory remarks about those critical elements in this first chapter.Most importantly, we believe that this evolving political context provides us with important information regarding the very definitions of those communities with whom colleges and universities should be engaging (spoiler alert: there is no one all-encompassing community that institutions of higher learning can approach with a single,unified message).  We also provide our readers with some introduction to a marital metaphor we will employ to describe the most desirable type of relationship that should be developed and maintained between campuses and the communities they are designed to serve. Marriages are thought to be most satisfying and stable - termed harmonious relationships -when partners are actively making efforts to meet each other's needs in ways that create a sense of overall comfort. On the other hand, marital partners find themselves in more difficult circumstances when one or both spouses are displaying less effort in maintaining the relationship and/or when those efforts are counter-productively creating greater degrees of discomfort.Sounding a similar note, we assert that universities will regain the high ground only when it is certain that the public at large is experiencing a more harmonious relationship with its land-grant institutions. Here we mean to say the efforts undertaken by each university must generate a sense of reassurance that the immediate interests of different communities are being served in tandem with those activities being recognized as vital to the future well-being of those communities. This primary orientation toward meeting the needs of communities rests on the decisive determination that land-grant institutions must position themselves as standing for distinctly different values than all other universities, both public and private. In higher education, there has been along-standing drive to make institutions more homogenized. We believe exactly the opposite should be the case, in large part because we know that the strength of the American higher educational system historically has rested on its diversity. For that reason, we are aggressive in insisting that the march toward becoming more fiercely land-grant in orientation coincides with the adoption of a servant leadership mentality on campus - in essence, trumpeting the cause of the servant university, or the people's university if you will -as we explain in more detail in our first chapter.

Gavazzi and Gee's book is on the future of Land-grant universities but the book has implications far beyond the Land-grants. The authors, long-time leaders of public higher education, have personal experience and unique perspectives on the challenges ahead. The Land-grant brand and operating principles carry a lot of respect and privilege. In today’s economic environment of rapid rising cost and decreasing federal and state supports, the Land-grant model is facing a host of challenges to continue to serve their communities and the public access mission effectively. Gavazzi and Gee used a very appropriate analogy of a marriage situation to describe the relationship between the land-grant university and its surrounding communities. A harmonious and stable relationship with healthy communications benefits both the land-grant and its communities. For all higher education institutions, this analogy is so very relevant. Presidents and provosts should always ask themselves, what is our standing in our community? Are we the preferred college for high school graduates in our region and our state? Did we try hard enough to earn the trust and support from our communities?

Interesting reading

Well researched and written with excellent interviews with a number of presidents and chancellors. Describes the importance of leaders who are committed to the tradition and understand that service is a pre-requisite to leading. Really the goal is to have the institution become a servant to the public good. Like that they provide historical background as well as focus on building on the values and commitments for the future. Think the next step is to have some strategies about how to identify and prepare leaders who have a calling to make a difference for the common good. Hopefully some of those servant leaders who were interviewed can step forward and help others see the important mission of the Land-grants and what it requires to make a difference rather than just chase the ratings. I commend the two authors for this undertaking and hope that people will seriously reflect on the importance of these institutions to higher education.

Stephen Gavazzi and Gordon Gee have written the ultimate roadmap for higher education to reach its full potential. The authors remind us that Land Grant Universities a.k.a. "The People's University," "The People's Servant," "Mr. (Pres) Lincoln's Universities" etc. already offer the best way forward, despite today's challenges. Land Grant Universities For The Future is for students, parents, alums and faculty alike who want to learn more about how universities can truly be the driving force in advancing the communities which they serve.

Gee and Gavazzi's exploration of the original land-grant university mission and the seeming migration away from its core tenets is an interesting and thought-provoking viewpoint that seems particularly timely at this transformational moment for higher education. I work a lot on issues related to regional economic development, especially technology-based economic development. The conversation frequently revolves around "innovation ecosystems" and the dynamics between institutions, organizations, and communities in these ecosystems. The focus, goes the conventional wisdom, must be on relationships, not transactions.In my view, this idea is central to the arguments made so powerfully by Gavazzi and Gee in this book. The only way that land-grant universities will be able to overcome the threats they face--and that indeed society at large faces--will be to focus on relationships with stakeholders and communities rather than transactions. Instead of delivering discovery and education, land-grant universities must co-create knowledge and solutions with their communities.While it's true that land-grant universities have a special mission that leads to an expectation of their leadership in community and societal engagement, the fact is that for American higher education to survive and thrive in the future, all colleges and universities--public and private--must focus more on relationships and less on transactions. All institutions of higher education are dealing at some level with the themes outlined by the authors--balancing acts around: funding and efficiencies, research and service, teaching and service, fundamental and applied scholarship, rankings and access, rural and urban needs, global and local impact, and educational and material values of a college degree.Gavazzi and Gee, then, have not only provided us a with the beginnings of a "Land-grant Fierce" manifesto for those institutions whose history begins with the Morrill Act. The first of the Mercy Thompson novels is quite an enjoyable introduction to Patricia Briggs's urban fantasy setting (although that term is semi-inappropriate for this story, as it takes place for the most part in what sounds like a suburban setting with a side order of mountain wilderness toward the middle). Told in the first person, this series follows the adventures of Mercedes Thompson ("Mercy" for short), who believes herself "no match for a werewolf" but has a tendency to prove herself capable of standing up to most of the dark things life throws at her from this book onward. A "walker," Mercy's magical superpower is the ability to shift into a coyote form, but what makes her interesting is the mundane set of talents and traits layered on top of that, many of which manifest her as one of a surprisingly small number of "strong, independent woman trope" characters who narratively make sure they earn that status in the eyes of the reader rather than just stepping up and assuming that a handful of vaguely defined positive strengths can carry a character arc. She's a tough character, but also tactful enough to maneuver around the troublesome dominance instincts of a werewolf to avoid angering them; she's independent in the most practical sense, by which I mean she runs and owns her own business and is good enough at what she does to be proud of that business. And while she may mentally acknowledge and occasionally acquiesce to the wishes of the protective Alpha males in her life, she never quite brings herself to give up sticking her nose in things and has the cunning, nerve, and deductive reasoning skills to stand out as a dark horse contributor to the adventures she takes part in. That Mercy is such a compelling character is important, because Mercy is what holds this series of books together. There is no single, continuous plot, there is only continuity and character development. The stories are largely self-contained within their own arcs apart from their building effect on the world in which Mercy lives and on her and the characters around her.This first book, Moon Called, is a little bit shaky in some aspects. It has a strong beginning, and a strong latter half. But toward the middle it begins to meander a bit too much, focusing too much attention in too condensed a chunk of the book on "guy problems," by which I mean Mercy's guy problems and then, immediately after, the problems of her gay werewolf friend. None of this is bad, but it leaves the pacing feeling uneven and I couldn't help but think that, if there was going to be a protracted period of non-action so soon in the book, it should not have set such a tense, violence-soaked tone in the early portion of the book. And if it needed to do that, then the romantic tensions of the middle portion really ought to have been spread out and broken up by more plot-relevant events. Fortunately this book is short enough that the meandering middle didn't wear me out before the story got back to business, which is good. And maybe this portion of the book is just more popular with Briggs's intended demographic than I give it credit for. It's very obvious from the way Mercy narrates events that the story is being written with straight women who like chiseled muscles, alpha males, and romanticized "animal instinct" notions in their love stories, and I'm a straight 29-year-old GUY who likes athletic women with a bit of humor and attitude, while simulataneously finding "animal instinct" notions in love stories goddang annoying. So my perspective might be skewed. Although the "...but all these animal instincts are kind of a pain in everyone's butts" caveat undertone to the proceeding does tickle that latter tendency of mine too, which I guess is a sign of a darn good, well-rounded approach to that idea. So Patricia Briggs does deserve some props for catering to one demographic while not necessarily writing a story that would be repellant to all others.Anyone coming into this series in the year 2017 might be thinking of the likes of Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey when I talk about that kind of thing though, so rest assured: Patricia Briggs is a much, much, much much much better writer than Stephanie Meyer or E. L. James. Leagues better. The only writing issues I can pinpoint are the above-mentioned uneven pacing, occasional typos here and there that should have really been flagged and fixed during the editing process, and the character of Warren, who is defined too heavily on his introduction by his homosexuality to entirely become anything more by the end of this book than "Adam and Mercy's gay werewolf friend" and may not grow on readers until subsequent books as a result of that. The frustrating thing in that last one is that Mercy herself briefly relays an anecdote about something cool Warren did in the past that marked him as a hero and all around good guy in her eyes, but actually witnessing that event as a scene within the book's narrative rather than a vague summary of backstory would have established Warren so much more effectively and then the whole thing where Mercy meddled with his boyfriend would have just been... you know... character development, rather than the only thing we knew about the character for the majority of his "screen time."Still, first novel in series, so some misteps are to be expected. Overall it was still very enjoyable. It never really elevated itself beyond the level of pulp fiction popcorn entertainment, but as those kinds of novels go, this is one of the good ones. It gets my wholehearted recommendation, and I'm already reading the second one as I write this.Final note: formatting in both the Mass Market Paperback and the Kindle edition are largely identical and fine. Paperback's small but sturdy and feels pretty good in the hand, but is not built for antiquity. If you're looking to COLLECT physical copies of these books, find hardcovers.

I must have read this book a minimum of ten times at this point. Yet, I have never officially reviewed it. When I picked it up (yet again) I was worried that I would have become bored with reading it. I mean I know EVERYTHING that is going to happen. I was thrilled that I enjoyed it just as much as the first time that I picked it up. Although, I did find myself making a lot of connections with plots further on in the series. It was pretty cool to see the continuity in the series.This book is pretty amazing. There is extremely impressive character building, the world that Briggs developed is fascinating, and the writing is superb. Reading this book makes me happy. Which, if you really think about it is kind of weird. It is not really a happy everything is well type of book. Yet I still pick up this book to relax away from the world.This is an amazing start to what I consider to be my absolute favorite urban fantasy series. If you are even remotely interested then you should absolutely, without a doubt, check out this book.

A wonderful start to an amazing series.Mercy is one of the best written heroines.She is strong and confident. She takes action and protects the people she cares about.Being a Coyote in a Werewolf territory isn't easy, but Mercy shows no fear and does whats needs to be done.Adam is a great Alpha. both as a man and as a potential love interest.Despite claiming Mercy as his mate in front of the Pack, he doesn't pressure her. He enjoys bantering with her and likes it when she stands up to him.Moon Called has great world building, the rules are clear bu Mercy being a Coyote, always changes the game....

Very much enjoyed this book. Characters are engaging and believable which isn't an easy accomplishment considering this is a paranormal novel. I am happy to find this series - paranormal with a hint of romance but without pages of repetitive graphic sex scenes.I read a review from a guy that I thought was insightful. He commented on the story lagging (for him) in the middle but he wondered if straight women would feel the same. I did not. I enjoyed getting to know characters from Mercy's back story and didn't find that it lagged other than a tiny section where she was driving back home. I skipped a few paragraphs and then was right back in track. It wasn't even enough to dock a star. There are a few typo's but having been a self published writer myself, I know how difficult they are to catch so I am a bit forgiving of them as long as they are few, easily understood and don't pull me very far out of the story. Her's funny bother me. I would purchased this again and will enjoy reading it again in the future.Off to buy the next one!

Purchased this book for a 24 day countdown to Christmas. I wrap up 24 books and put them in a open box. Then Dec. 1st I let one of my grandchildren open a book then I read it to them. This way they learn to count, listen, take turns and wait. It is fun to do.

My husband loves these books, so we had to add them to our babies book collection.

This is the best series of books for kids. My kids read these books and now my grandkids are reading them. They have a way of explaining life so that kids can understand

Daughter loves it! It has the mouse friend and the spider on almost every page, so if you like searching for them as much as my daughter does then this is one of the best Little Critter books.
