If you are a fan of the Ultima series and especially Ultima 7 this book is a must. How cool is it to read a novel that describes the game you are playing?

I've owned ultima games since I was 12 years old. I started with ultima V warriors of destiny and soon had to start collecting every game in the series back to ultima II. I have all the cloth maps as well. This boook does a great job covering Ultima IV V and VI in great detail with fun stories as well.I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the ultima series and even those that play ultima online would do well to read up on the history of Brittania and really learn where Ultima came from.

Though Caroline Spector has yet to publish a book entailing Serpent Isle, Ultima 8, and Ultima 9, this book is perfectly suited towards its original purpose. It provides handy maps, goods tables, and a straightforward walkthroughs to the Black Gate as well as Ultma Underworld 1, and also the first small parts of Serpent Isle and Underworld 2. I particularly enjoyed reading the novelized walkthroughs, as well as the introductions by Richard Garriott and Lord British. Now if she'd just release another one, I could get out of Pagan....

American Seafood: Heritage, Culture & Cookery From Sea to Shining Sea, by Barton Seaver

Review

Barton Seaver's American Seafood is a comprehensive and inspirational exploration of lesser known species and rekindles an awareness of the people, places, and histories of our oceans." -Eric Ripert, Chef & Co-Owner of Le Bernardin "In American Seafood, Barton beautifully navigates the complex historical relationship between our nation and the sea, while sharing his pragmatic perspective on how to best manage the resource to benefit future generations of fisherman and consumers." -Tom Colicchio, Chef/Owner Crafted Hospitality"As the great philosopher Brillat-Savarin wrote, 'Tell me what you eat and I'll tell you who you are.' I have no doubt that we are who we are because for generations we have benefitted from the bounty of seafood from our oceans. If humanity wants to keep being who we are, we will need to take care of the oceans that have given us so much. Barton¹s new book American Seafood gives you a complete retrospective of why this is so important for our past, our present, and our future." -José Andrés, Chef/Owner, minibar by José Andrés and ThinkFoodGroup"I can't stop reading this book. I've caught, cleaned and eaten nearly every species of fish in North America, but Barton's got me beat. His experience shines in this relentlessly fascinating work that is teaching this old angler new tricks. But even better than his species accounts are his rich vignettes about America's diverse fishing culture, a culture too precious to be lost, despite the intense pressures facing our rivers, lakes and seas." -Hank Shaw, 2013 James Beard Award winner, Best Food Blog, Hunter Angler Gardener Cook, and author of Hunt, Gather, Cook: Finding the Forgotten Feast★Seaver (For Cod and Country), head of the sustainable seafood and health initiative at the Center for Health and the Global Environment at the Harvard School of Public Health, has assembled a gorgeous illustrated encyclopedic survey of America’s evolving relationship with seafood. From abalone to wreckfish, Seaver details key characteristics of each fish, its place in culinary history, and common preparations: grouper, for example, are caught mostly in the Gulf of Mexico, and are an ‘all-purpose fish, as their pearly white meat cooperates with just about any flavors and methods of preparation.’ Occasionally he suggests recipes for classic dishes such as lobster Newburg, cioppino stew, and seafood gumbo. Seaver offers accolades to the people in the fishing industry who help bring that food to the table, and the book is accordingly laced with gorgeous photos of fishers and their vessels, massive stacks of preserved halibut and fresh shrimp, and vintage advertisements and other fishing ephemera. ‘Seafood is part of our culinary heritage,’ Seaver writes in the book’s introduction, and his argument that Americans can’t understand the present without knowledge of the past rings loud and clear in this remarkable work.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)“This lavishly illustrated reference guide to edible sea creatures from American waters answers most every question about what shows up in U.S. fish markets and how it all got there. Seaver inventories fish and shellfish from Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf sources, and even the Great Lakes. He gives place of honor to fishermen themselves, noting the deadly dangers they confront in order to feed us. He also delves into fishing techniques, distinguishing the workings of all kinds of nets, trawls, and dredges. He even gets into cultural details, such as how African Americans came to dominate commercial fishing in some places. A few iconic recipes appear, such as cioppino and clam chowder. As if the text were not in and of itself valuable, Seaver has collected both contemporary and historical photos and drawings of fishing boats, fishermen, and even ads. Some of the most intriguing are posters from war years, propagandizing Americans to eat more fish in times of meat rationing.” —Booklist (starred review)

I've been a sport fisherman for 55 years, was a commercial fisherman for 5 years. I LOVE this book! Bought 4 more for gifts.

Gave this as a gift. Folks loved it!

Great book and a great resource for people like me that love to eat fish.

Beautiful book. Made a great gift.

A great story and history

Must have for fish

Great Book

A beautifully illustrated compendium of history, ecology, and biology interspersed with recipes and cooking techniques, "American Seafood" is one of the most interesting (and most striking) books I own.The content: I keep using the word "beautiful", but that's what this book is. The writing is no exception. It's evocative, clear, professional, informative, and unique. You can't read this book without learning a great deal about history, culinary arts, ecology, and culture. Also, I can personally attest to the quality of the recipes. There aren't nearly as many as I expected, but what's in here is delicious. The aesthetics: each page is glossy and heavy-weight. The illustrations and photographs are stunning and beautifully reproduced. The cover is solid and quite heavy, with textured cloth and embossed graphics. It weighs in at a hefty 500+ pages, with the heft and weight of a college textbook. There is so much in here, and all of it is fascinating. It's beautiful enough to make a display piece, coffee table book, or a really nice gift.If you want to learn about the seafood industry, fishing history, and watery ecosystems of the United States, this is the book for you! It's incredibly interesting, beautifully bound, and unique. Highly recommended.

I wouldn't pass up more time with Allyson and Willem and see what happens after.THE SHORT OF IT: I didn’t necessarily NEED this novella because I was very satisfied with the way Just One Year ended but I’m glad I read it because I was curious how their reunion went and I wouldn’t pass that up ever! It was a quick novella that gave the perfect, realistic glimpse into their reunion night and brought them full circle as two people who changed a lot over the course of the year after their life changing encounter. Happy feelings for sure! Was worth the money even though I HATE buying novellas!FULL REVIEW:Here was my thought process when I first found out that Gayle Forman wrote the Just One Night novella:1. OMG NEW WORDS FROM GAYLE FORMAN. I NEED.2. I really don’t like buying novellas but FINE OKAY IT’S GAYLE.3. But…I LOVED THE ENDING. It doesn’t need a novella to me. I have how it all goes down in my mind.4. However, I won’t pass up more time with Allyson and Willem and company. Here’s the thing: you either found the ending of Just One Year to be satisfying (like I did) or you were furious about how it ended with them opening the door and us not knowing what happens beyond that. I know so many people just wanted to know what happened (I totally did) and hated the fact that we watch them look for each other and we don’t get to see the “end results” so to speak. I totally get it but I felt differently (and I think in the minority?).For me, the ending to Just One Year was perfect because, even though it was about THEM finding and losing and finding each other again, it was also mostly for me about them finding themselves in the first place. So, as much as I would have LOVED to see the happily ever after and all the nitty gritty details of their reunion, I was at a state of complete contentedness with the ending. It felt full circle and I saw two people who were changed by an encounter they had a year ago reunite as very different people. They lost each other but they had found themselves. And them being reunited, to me, was just this confirmation that taking risks and letting yourself become who you want to be by saying YES is life changing. But this is just my opinion and it’s probably TOTALLY biased because Just One Day changed my life. Literally. Like action was taken because of this book so that stuck with ME as I read Just One Year as well.So now that we’ve talked about where I was with my feelings going INTO Just One Night(because that’s important)…let’s talk about Just One Night:I really enjoyed it! I didn’t NEED it but it made me smile and honestly was kind of perfect. I can’t say a lot HAPPENED in it so if you are looking for some HUGE, dramatic fireworks-and-they-lived-happily-ever-afters kind of thing I didn’t see it as that (I mean, it’s a night) but it still gave me those happily ever after feels anyways because of everything they gained in the first place and the possibilities that there WERE for the future (especially as we learn in Just One Year about a potential job offer that would take Willem to the US). It complemented Just One Year nicely in the way it ends to be honest. It was quiet (okay, the sexual tension and FEELS was anything but quiet) but exciting and FULL of feelings and answers.I was really pleased that it started from the exact second the door opened. Everything that happened seemed so realistic after that. The emotions and FEELINGS after all the longing and searching. The wanting to talk about everything they both had been through. The exuberance shared with friends who knew their journey to find each other. I LOVED watching them put the pieces together about how they found each other and how hard they searched. Everything that happened was exactly what I think would happen in that scenario. The whole night was the perfect kind of reunion and I loved that we were reunited with so many important characters that aided them to get where they were. I had lots of FEELINGS (happy ones) and I don’t want to give too much away but it was a really nice peek into what happened after the door opened and I was really pleased with it as someone who had already had a whole made-up reunion and thoughts of Allyson and Willem years down the road in my head immediately after I finished Just One Year.

In Just One Day, Allyson and Willem meet for one memorable day before getting separated. In Just One Year, the two spend the following year searching for one another before finally succeeding. But did they get their happily ever after? All be warned: there will be spoilers.I wasn’t a huge fan of this series in general but was so thrown by the ending (or lack of ending) in book two that I knew I had to pick this up regardless. Allyson and Willem never generated any warm fuzzies for me but I still wanted to see what happened to the two of them in the end. After finishing Just One Night I have to say, they (author? publisher? whoever made the call to publish this.) should have left well enough alone. The two get their happily ever after, but Just One Night only manages to showcase Allyson’s creepy stalker obsession with Willem (I’m sorry, but who travels the globe searching for a guy she spent a single day with?) and Willem’s creepy foot fetish. I’m not joking. Did he obsess about her feet in the other books? Because if he did I must have blocked that s*** out because, ew? For only 43 pages there were an obscene amount of foot comments. Here are several examples:‘Allyson is sitting on the sofa, her sandals off, neatly placed under the coffee table. (The sight of her bare feet. What this is doing to Willem’s blood pressure. She might as well have taken off all her clothes.)’‘It all feels like a dream and yet as natural as breathing. This is what you do. Put Allyson’s feet into your lap.’‘They are on the stairs and she is under him and he’s got that wrist of hers in his mouth (finally!) but it’s not enough, he wants all of her (the feet!) [...]‘“…Allyson is sitting next to him, and with everyone jammed at the table, she is right up close. And then she slips off her sandals under the table and sort of nuzzles her foot against his.He loses his appetite, for food anyway.”In addition to the creepy foot comments there was one ‘memorable’ scene in particular where Allyson was behind Willem on the bike he was riding and she decides to make out with his back, I guess since his mouth wasn’t available.‘She can nuzzle against his back and lick his vertebra if she wants to. (She does, so she does.)’‘Willem is just desperate for it to end. He is so full of wanting that it is painful and Allyson keeps lifting his shirt and licking his back, which she shouldn’t do while he’s riding a bike because he might pass out. (But she shouldn’t stop, either.)’This is the fourth Gayle Forman book I’ve read yet was the poorest showcasing of her writing skills. The point of view was often unclear and would switch up at random without any section breaks resulting in a strange disjointed feel to this short tale. Plus, I’m not sure what was up with the strange sentences she decided belonged in parenthesis for no apparent reason.Just One Night was intended to give fans the happily ever after that was lacking in Just One Year but it just didn’t do it for me. It failed to create emotional resonance I would have expected for two people that spent the past year searching for one another. Maybe it’s because I can’t look past the creepy feet comments or the fact that it seemed to be about nothing more than the two sleeping with each other. Maybe it’s because I never cared for their story or either one of their characters but I didn’t feel there was anything truly romantic about this love story.

Bought this for the required reading for my graduate school young adult class. As a teacher for undergrads, I'm not sure they would have related to it.

One of my favorites books as a teenager, I read it twice as a class assignment and again on my own both times it took me less than a hour to complete

Great book for teenagers. I was sure I read this at high school, but guess I am so old it wasn't familiar at all.

good

Read the book when I was 16, and it was great to find it again. It was like I was 16 again. Loved it !

A great coming of age and cautionary tale well written-as always by Paul Zindel.

When this book was out in the 70s, I remember a big fuss that the librarian made because I was 12 or 13 and wanted to read it and she thought I was too young to be reading that. Give me a break. There are two kinds of 13-year-olds in the world: the kind who just want to hang out and be good buddies with someone for a few years, and the uber-romantic kind who want to date and fall in love. I was the latter. This book was very interesting in a teen-movie-of-the-week sort of way - does anyone remember all those 70s movies about teenage girls losing their virginity and the consequences that resulted? Books like "My Darling, My Hamburger" and "Forever", as well as the movies, gave us a chance to think about those types of events and emotions and the possible outcomes, without actually having to DO the deed, which in hindsight I'll admit we were mostly not mature enough to handle. This book is about two teenage couples, Liz and Sean, and their respective friends Maggie and Dennis. Liz and Sean are the beautiful people - good looking and seemingly in true love with each other. Both of them have lousy home lives and are very happy to have a kindred spirit; the only bump in the road of their relationship is that Liz doesn't want to "go all the way" with Sean and when she finally does (after much hassle and a harrowing near-rape by another boy) she gets pregnant. The question then becomes whether Liz will have an illegal abortion or whether she and Sean will stay together and raise their child. Maggie and Dennis, on the other hand, are shy and a little bit clumsy, just starting to take their first steps into the world of dating, and since they have to watch and sometimes participate in the big soap opera between Liz and Sean, you can't hardly blame them for wanting to move a little slower. By the end of the book, Liz and Sean's lives are pretty well wrecked and Maggie and Dennis have matured into much more confident adults. The story is dated in some respects - for example, abortion is still illegal; teen pregnancy is a much more shameful condition than it is today; and the fashions, movies and dialogue in the book aren't exactly up to the minute. However, the main theme of how to balance first love and sexual desire without everything going kablooey still rings pretty true. As for the people who wonder why nice-but-shy Maggie would hang around with gorgeous Liz who's something of a jerk, I see this pairing all the time among young girls and older women too. The person who is acting like a jerk often has a pretty soft interior (as does Liz - she just hides a lot of it along with her insecurity) and the "nice" person often enjoys the excitement of being around a prettier and more popular girl, even going so far as to act in a "caretaker" role just as Maggie looks after Liz when she becomes ill. I would still recommend this book for teenagers interested in books about relationships, although I think girls would be the ones most likely to read and enjoy it since the male characters are less developed and with the exception of Dennis, act more like jerks.

I really enjoyed this book, even though it was written almost 40 years ago. I believe my mother read it when she was in school and told me about it. I'm pretty sure the corny title is what turned me away from it when I was younger, but I received the book in a book lot I ordered online, and I picked it up because it was, to me, a short read. I was instantly hooked. I really liked the characters and the writing style. Even though it was written so long ago, the situations and problems these four teens deal with, are always happening. I could easily portray them in today's time. Highly recommended!
