Dr. Atkins' Quick and Easy New Diet Cookbook

Amazon.com Review

"Diet food can be better, richer, and more sumptuous than most everyday foods," says Dr. Robert Atkins, author of the massive bestseller, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. Carbohydrates, in his opinion, are the root of metabolic evil and the source of hyperinsulinemia, a condition that makes it next to impossible to lose weight. Billed as a companion to his Diet Revolution book, this collection of recipes focuses on ultralow-carbohydrate dishes. His anticarb stance leads to some unconventional dietary advice: "Remember that, as a rule, the lower the fat content of a milk product, the higher its carbohydrate grams. Use cream, not skim milk; use sour cream, not yogurt." While these recipes are certainly quick and easy to prepare and feature easy-to-find ingredients, some are very high in fat (Zabaglione, Crab and Avocado Salad, Ham and Cheese Sandwiches, Baked Eggs in Bacon Rings). While it may be true that fat is flavor and is necessary to some extent to keeping blood sugar on an even keel, these recipes won't be helpful for those who are watching their cholesterol or are on similarly restricted diets.

Review

To readers of celebrity and/or health and beauty magazines, Dr Atkins and his low-carbohydrate diet are as familiar as Audrey Eyton and her low-fat F-Plan diet were in the early 1990s. The main difference between them is that nutritionists were able to endorse the F-plan, with its emphasis on vegetables and fibre, as a healthy way of eating regardless of whether weight loss was the desired objective, whereas the official health view seems to be more ambivalent about the benefits of Dr Atkins's so-called New Diet Revolution, with its high-fat, high-protein, low-carbohydrate regime, and its assertion that it is better to cook with cream than with skimmed milk. That said, anything that helps to ameliorate the effects of the obesity epidemic sweeping the West certainly has to be a good thing, and Atkins is not short of celebrities queueing up to endorse his system, which offers sumptuous food of a quality that probably means the dieter is more likely to stick to the regime. His wife, Veronica, provides the low-carbohydrate recipes you will find here, all easily prepared in 30 minutes or less and all of which, it must be said, sound delicious and unlike any diet food you will ever have tried before. Imagine a dinner of artichoke hearts wrapped in bacon, followed by pork tenderloin medallions with soured cream and dill, with a dessert of chocolate butter cream, or baked goat's cheese and ricotta custards followed by steak au poivre and zabaglione, and you can see how people are attracted to the idea of this no-deprivation diet. Atkins runs through some of the principles behind his carbohydrate-free regime at the beginning of the book, but to understand properly the principles behind it one would probably have to read this in tandem with the two earlier books. There is no denying, however, that most of the recipes sound quite delicious and simple, and if this diet works for you, then that can only be a good thing. (Kirkus UK) --na

I gave it three stars because most of these recipes are fantastic and warrant 5 stars. I only gave it three stars because many of the recipes call for ingredients you cannot get any more. They sell the book as fully revised, but they have not updated the recipes to reflect either the current market or their current product line. The good news is that some of the ingredients have been reproduced and can be found on the web (in recipe form only). The bad news is, they are not exactly the same as the missing ingredients. If you buy this you will make some mouth watering food and be glad you bought it, but you will also be very frustrated broken recipes. For the record I have about 5 low carb cookbooks and it is common to find recipes built on ingredients you can no longer buy -- my beef with this book is that it's sold as "fully revised" which does not apply to the content, but rather to the copyright.

I've been using this book for approx. 2 weeks in conjuction with the diet. I have enjoyed every recipe I have tried and have found them to be tasty as well as fairly easy to make. Some of the recipes do have higher carb content than I would like, but I just plan ahead and eat less carbs throughout the day--it's worth it. This cookbook has helped make this the easiest "diet" I've ever tried and I can certainly see this turning into a lifelong way of eating, definitely more so than any other plan I have tried. I always knew deep down inside, that I could never stick to a low-fat, high carb diet indefinitely--the thought of that always depressed me. I am now going to purchase his other cookbook on the basis of having such success with this one. I've never been much for cooking, just the basics, so I didn't find the recipes to be tedious or redundant. I loved the creamed chicken w/mushrooms, burgers w/feta, pork medallions in dill sauce, and garlic dill meatballs. I just tried the cheese bread and found it to be very satisfying after 3 1/2 wks (and 17 lbs lighter) with no bread. I just wish there were more recipes. I love this book and I love this way of eating!!!

I bought Atkins' "Quick & Easy New Diet Cookbook" from Amazon and love it! It is indeed as his widow Veronica says "controlled carbohydrate fine cuisine." The recipes are simple and easy.About Atkins -- for years, I tried to lose weight counting calories. It didn't always work and I stayed hungry.Fortunately, I kept a food journal this last time, and I recommend doing this to everyone who's struggling with the mysteries of fat los(you do NOT want to lose muscle mass!)I was down to 500 calories a day, and the weight wouldn't budge.I kept a graph, too, and watched my weight go all over the chart. Then, I discovered Atkins.I noticed that most of the food I had been eating was low in calories but high in carbohydrates - the white stuff: white breads, white rice, white potatoes. I discovered that, if I'm trying to drop a few pounds, I have to avoid even the brown rice, whole wheat breads and whole-wheat pastas and high-sugar fruits. And I found that I just can't ever do sugars and starches and lose weight.I guess some people can, depending on their matabolism and how their bodies process food, but you have to find out what works for you.Atkins has been criticized in his earlier books for the amount of fathe allows but his later works have modified some of that. And, too, it seems that his critics didn't read his books in entirety, or if they did, wren't accurate about their reporting and seemed alarmed possibly because these critics might be in the pasta industry and losing sales! When we lost Atkins, we lost a brilliant food chemist.Low carb, high protein may not be for everyone, but it is for me.Dr. Oz wrote an interesting article in the September 19, 2011 issue of "First for Women" magazine about diet and blood types.According to the article, Type 0 seems to process protein better than other types. Don't know about that but, I am Type 0.Again, this latest Atkins' cookbook is great.

After obeying the diet's ground rules, I needed some inspiration to keep up with a good thing. This book passes with high marks. The ingredients are either in your cabinets (as often stated) or easy to obtain. The receipes ARE easy and quick. Tasty. Try the meat-izza for a Friday night. Or die for the crustless cheesecake. Keep red cabbage in the fridge for those filling pre-dinner salads. My daughter and I have been leafing through this diet road map and losing weight every week. In our opinion, this book is a great addition to your kitchen and the perfect companion to the Atkins Diet.

Great info taste great and short time to make

It's a classic for a reason. tasty recipes, and the spiral bound lies flat!

Disappointing. Most of the recipes use Atkins baking mixes that are not even sold any more. Most of the rest of them use microwave ovens, which I do not use. The redeeming quality is the extensive carbohydrate counting list. It will show up at my local charity soon.

Just received this book. Have purchased Atkins cookbooks in the past.Having made many entrees and snacks and even desserts from them I am pretty sure these will also be tasty and simple to create which is exactly what I like.

Torn between three stars and four. Points to praise are (i) its author quite possibly has greater knowledge about this awful tragedy than anybody else on the planet, (ii) he has an admirable ability to convey quite complex aspects of the narrative very clearly and (iii) the book probably contains all the facts (as opposed to opinions and judgments) that any reader is likely to want. On the downside, though (i) judgment and opinion are conflated with the facts. I would rather have seen, first, a straightforward narrative of the facts - the relevant precedents, the preparation for the match, what happened on the day and the long history of events following the tragedy and then second, and separately, comment, judgment and opinion on these facts. (ii) the author finds fault, and grounds for suspicion, in the activities of so many on the Establishment (as opposed to the bereaved families) side. Clearly, the South Yorkshire police had a massive self-interest in shedding the blame, but the author suggests that the original coroner, the two judges who undertook separate public enquiries, the judge at the civil prosecution of two senior police officers, Jack Straw, and (possibly) the European Court of Human Rights seemed to shed common sense in order to disadvantage the bereaved families pursuing the truth. None of these had a vested interest in doing so, hence it would be worth investigating why they chose to go this route and/or whether their actions were perhaps more sensible than the author suggests. There is no suggestion that any of them were approached for comment. But I'm glad I read this, although prospective readers should be warned that it tells a grim tale, not only of the tragedy itself, but of the frustration put in the way of the bereaved families, desperately seeking closure.

This important, readable, engrossing book describes the tragedy at Hillsborough stadium when 96 people died in a crowd crush when police and stadium officials mishandled crowds at a football (or soccer, as we Americans would say) game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. The game was played at a neutral location, the Hillsborough stadium at Sheffield, and the Liverpool fans, though greater in number than the Nottingham Forest fans, were confined to an end of the stadium that was served by an inadequate number of turnstiles. As crowds built up waiting to use the turnstiles, the police commander made a fateful decision to open a gate that led into an already crowded area of the stadium. At that time, football fans were confined in what were accurately called "pens" to try to restrict rushes to the pitch or fights between fans of opposing sides. Liverpool fans entering from the tunnel couldn't see what lay ahead of them and entered pens that then became packed, with people crushed to death as they stood. Those who fell became entangled in nightmarish clumps. The game began at 3 pm and a referee ended it just six minutes later. It was too late. Under the very eyes of the police commander in a watch post, 96 people died. Fans tried to help each other, even as the police showed almost no comprehension of what was happening. This book provides a compelling account of the political context that led the police to misunderstand the situation and then try to cover up their failure. The police cover up began almost immediately after the deaths, with blood alcohol levels taken from all the deceased, including the children, as the police prepared to blame the fans for their own deaths, declaring that drunken fans had forced their way into the stadium and had trampled on those already there. The families of the dead struggled for years for a fair accounting of what had happened. Scraton was a key player in their struggle. In this book, he tells the story of what happened with insight, compassion, and eloquence. Above all, he explains what really happened at Hillsborough in a way that makes clear the risks of poor crowd management. The police and the owners of the stadium viewed the working class fans who bought tickets for the standing terraces as uncouth louts who needed to be corralled and controlled and they devoted little thought to how they could watch games in safe conditions. This book makes a major contribution to our understanding of crowd safety and also to our understanding of organizational dysfunction, as was exhibited by the police, aided and abetted by their political supporters. Since this book was written, the people of Liverpool won a huge victory as all documents in the case were opened and police manipulation was revealed. Scraton played a major role in making this happen. For more on the case, see the BBC film on Hillsborough. All credit to Scraton for his long struggle to make the truth known and for writing this book and the later report of the Hillsborough Independent Panel.

Heartbreaking. What these families went through to get the answers of their loved ones deaths' is just heartbreaking. The coldness and efficiency at which the government handled the events and aftermath left me cold. Well written and expertly delivered. Phil Scraton may be a professor but it isn't dry reading. A little more background on the investigation at the scene would have been nice and a little more in depth of the officer that came forward would have set the table as to the resulting investigations; but that is my only complaints. It brings heart to a tragedy that these victims are not names on a tablet and that their families still mourn them. I have watched the documentary and now after this exhaustive work I am glad justice has finally been served.

Thank you Phil Scraton. This book is the culmination of years of effort on the part of Professor Scratonand it shows. This is a careful analysis of the tradgedy that was Hillsborough, particularly the injustices heaped upon the victims and their families. No doubt this book played a significant role in achieving justice for the 96!

A disturbing account of what can happen when society's trusted institutions decide to distort the facts and lie to save their own skins regardless of the hurt they will cause the bereaved.

I had to keep putting this book down as it was so sad to read of what happened and why it happened. A story well worth reading even if you are not a football fan

I knew the story. I saw the ESPN 30 for 30 on this. Getting the book and holding the truth in my hand is like holding history in my hand.

Though sometimes repetitive in its efforts to bring home points, the book is an irreplaceable part in the dialogue regarding Hillsborough. A thoughtful and complete documentation (to 2009) of what did and did not happen at Hillsborough on 15 April 1989, along with the ensuing representations and misrepresentations in the justice system and media.

Christopher Grey's "Master Lighting Guide for Portrait Photographers" is a well-written, easy to follow guide that does an excellent job describing how to set up your lights to achieve different effects when shooting portraits. The photos that he uses provide superb examples of the effects of changing both the power of the light as well as how different modifiers affect the final image. In this book, Mr. Grey begins with a quick lesson on the physics of light and basic lighting equipment. After that appetizer, he starts in with the real meat, discussing:1. Lighting ratios and how to represent them in a universal language that is easy to translate to actual flash settings2. Basic lighting, including broad lighting and short lighting3. Classic lighting, where he gives specific details on how to arrange your lights to achieve several classic looks such as loop lighting, closed-loop lighting, Rembrandt style, side lighting, and butterfly lighting. For each of these techniques, he presents lighting diagrams and sample "builds" to achieve the final product.Following the overview of the specific lighting techniques, he discusses "Portrait Lighting in Practice", where he covers numerous topics including business photography (such as head shots), applying makeup, location photography, bridal potraits, high-key lighting, any many other topics. Whereas the previous portion of the book was written for a universal audience, this section is tailored slightly to the aspiring professional photographer. As an amateur with a minimal set of equipment that I set up in my living room, I was able to appreciate and understand everything he discussed in this area of the book, but there are definitely topics that I don't expect to need. I would imagine that these topics would be of more value to someone looking to become a professional.I purchased the Kindle edition of this book for my iPad after reading my friend's copy of the physical book. The book presents nice, large, crisp photos that are extremely instructive. In the physical book, you can see the subtle differences that changing a light modifier or boosting the strobe a 1/2 stop has on the end photograph. In the Kindle edition, however, most of the photos are very small, grainy, and lose much of their value because they are so poor. Additionally, the layout of the Kindle edition is awful. For example, with the physical book, a page will show up to 8 different photos that allow you to compare the results of changes in light at a single glance. In the Kindle edition, however, there are at most 2 photos on a page, so not only can't you easily see the subtle differences in the photos all at once, but the text describing the differences is often 5 "pages" away. Finally, the Kindle edition conversion does not seem to be able to handle displaying fractions other than 1/2, as any time Mr. Grey uses a quarter-based fraction in his text (e.g. 1/4 or 3/4), all that you see in the Kindle edition is a square. One would think that when converting a book about photography, whose value is as much tied to the actual photographs as the content, that there would be an emphasis on great photos in the Kindle edition. Sadly, this is not the case. I do not know if Amazon or Amherst Media (the book publisher) is to blame, but the quality of the Kindle edition is really unacceptable and if I could return it I would. Perhaps I should take some of the blame for not downloading a sample of the book first, but, please Amazon, improve your Kindle editions of these books.

First of all, Chris Grey really knows what he is talking about. This book is well written. The layout is fantastic, he goes in depth with each chapter. Whether you are an experienced photographer or an beginner, I believe this book will help you increase your skills regardless. As he talks about different types of light, and different lighting techniques in depth, he also has great diagrams too help you understand better. Especially for those of us who need too visualize it. IF you choose too purchase this book, it will help you take your photography too the next level. This book was actually recommended too me from my mentor, and he was right too recommend it.

This book, and Chris Grey's DVD's (Shoot Smarter) are FANTASTIC!The easy to understand diagrams, the unique and creative techniques and the overview of styles is second to none...After buying this book on Amazon I was so impressed that I actually flew from California to Chicago to take a 4 day class from the author at Shoot Smarter University (Will Crocket's studio in Arora, IL).In all of my training, and with all my EXPENSIVE equipment purchases in camera equipment, NOTHING has improved my creative and technical output like Chris Grey's books, training, and videos...As I say to my friends, "I have drank the Kool-Aid that is Chris Grey's teaching and I am an evangelical believer in his techniques". I now have the confidence to shoot JPEGs and not worry about my "recovery" in PhotoShop!Other GREAT books by Chris Grey include Photoshop Effects for Portrait Photographers (Focal Press) and an up-coming book about Canon Cameras (Fall 07).HIGHLY reccomended!

To those with learning disabilities as myself, having suffered a stroke, that use visuals for their input, this book was excellent in all it's methodologies of teaching lighting techniques!First were the photos themselves, each was shown along with the lighting ratios, and the effect of the various lighting implements used for that particular mood or style of photo being expressed.Next was a series of photos taken with the same lighting ratio, but with different equipment, showing just how illuminating light can be, and how a Softbox, Umbrella, and what have you can change and influence just how mood and intensity are controlled.I highly recommend this book for it's excellence in handling the subject at hand...namely Portrait Lighting!

I bought this book thinking I would be able to easily set up a studio from it.I found this book extremely informative BUT on a medium to high-end level. It is not really a practical guide for the beginning photographer however, I am sure I will be refereing it to in the future.Chris Grey explains how he set up his lighting in order to get the shots he shows in this book.My problem was that most of his sets are based on the photographer buying many many different types of reflectors, lights and flags etc.He does not really explain the simple, beginners studio. He does not explain for low ceilings etc.He shows his shots and explains how he got them so if you have the same set up, the same size room etc, you too can reproduce these shots. While it is a well written book, I found it to be on a high level. If someone is already at this level of lighting equipment, then he already knows all the info on ratios Chris writes about.Great reference guide and enjoyable to read. Not for the beginner who wishes to use it as a guide to setting up his first studio.

In bible college, we were told to get several books to help us understand and interpret the bible; I wish this was one of them!It is easy to put yourself neatly in the box of those around you - evangelical, baptist, protestant, catholic, liberal, conservative - whatever it is. But when it comes down to it, the Bible was not written with our 21st century categories of thought in mind. McKnight does a great job at looking at culture and context when he highlights some examples of passages that some denominations or schools of thought either brush off, ignore, or twist. But he doesn't say - "Here's a bible, go in a room by yourself and read it, and forget all of the church theology you've ever heard. He makes the argument that a person should read the bible WITH tradition so that you have a basis of commonly accepted theology and practice, but you still have the freedom to break away, or reform.I highly recommend this book for the serious student of the bible, and one who has a decent foundation in reading scripture on their own.

In this book, McKnight tackles the difficult issues of contextual reading and spiritual discernment in a way meant to make these difficult concepts understandable for the average reader without specialized training in or familiarity with the discipline of biblical hermeneutics. He succeeds admirably, I think, in making the book accessible to a wide range of readers, though those of a more scholarly bent might find some of his explanations and/or examples a bit simplistic.I agree with McKnight that it is important to properly qualify our claims of "literal" application and obedience to Scripture; we are often more selective in this than we would care to admit. However, even some of McKnight's readings, especially of the rules related to modest clothing and hairstyles on women in II Timothy 2 reflect the very subjectivity that he is critiquing. (He reads these texts with no acknowledgement of how they have been read and understood within the Holiness and Mennonite strands of the Christian tradition.)Most concerning of all to me though, was this statement on pg. 143 related to the Jerusalem Council of Acts 15: "Was the Jerusalem council messy? Yes, it was. Did they discern what to do for that time? Yes, they did. Was it permanent, for all time, for everyone, always, everywhere? No." I wonder if that means McKnight feels there will ever be a contemporary context in which Christians SHOULD become Jewish proselytes in order to be a part of the Church... I would hope not, but that statement seems to leave that as a logical possibility at least.I think that illustrates both the importance and the challenge of addressing the "contextual" nature of Scriptural interpretation. There is a constant tension between discerning what is "universal" and what is "particular." And I couldn't agree with McKnight more that it is this interpretive tension that necessitates an active role of the Spirit in our reading of Scripture. Finally, McKnight spends several chapters addressing the perennial issue of the role of women in church ministry as his kind of "test case" or "working example" of the kind of contextually-sensitive/discernment-oriented hermeneutic he is promoting. Though he doesn't break much new interpretive ground in his work on the so-called "silence passages" (1 Cor. 14:34; 2 Tim. 2:9-15), he does nicely pull together a coherent and compelling response to the traditional prohibition of women holding roles of spiritual and/or teaching authority within the church. (Having already been convinced of a strongly egalitarian view, McKnight only confirmed what I already thought.) Just this section alone might be worth the price of the book.McKnight's book is really most valuable in that it is such an easy read. He keeps the tone conversational rather than didactic, and peppers the book with enough personal observations and stories to maintain the reader's attention. I think the book has value as a way to introduce some of the thornier questions of hermeneutics to beginners. There is much more than can (and must!) be said than what McKnight says here, but at the very least, he provides a book that helpfully frames some of the most important questions we as followers of Christ will ever have to answer.

A wonderful book that will encourage you to reevaluate how you read the Bible. Not many casual readers of the Bible seem to understand that the various books of the Bible were written over the course of thousands of years by different authors, and are different types of writing aimed at different purposes. You can't read the Epistles in the same way you read Leviticus. The setup using the parakeet could have had a clearer tie-in with the concepts he discusses, but his application of the literary skills to the issue of women being in positions of leadership in a church is brilliant. I feel this particular issue has been one that has led to the wasting of a lot of wonderfully competent talent in Christian leadership, and is one that any woman who feels the slightest compulsion by God to enter that realm should read.

This book has opened my eyes to a more wholistic and true way to read the Bible. Scot's straightforward language and commentary has given me a new depth of understanding and his refrain from offering his opinion (thought I have felt like I could confidently guess what his opinion would be) in other arenas gives me respect for his opinion. He clearly doesn't just teach but believes what he is saying and has spent a great part of his career trying to better understand the Bible, its purpose, its range, its language, interpretation, and application. You need not be a theologian to read it but I think even a theologian could appreciate the ideas presented and the manner in which they are presented. Really good for lay theologians or theologian wannabes.

An evangelical pastor/biblical scholar confronts his own denomination, gently and with respect, regarding dogma and the role of women in the church. To his colleagues who take at face value that stuff about "women remaining silent," McKnight asks "what did women do in the Bible? He cites Deborah, Esther, Lydia and others and concludes that dogma that is not consistent with biblical witness cannot be biblical. He quotes esteemed professor F. F Bruce: "I think Paul would roll over in his grave if he knew we were turning his letters into torah."The overall message is about reading Scripture for Story. Just as God spoke to Abraham, Moses, Jacob...and Paul in THEIR time and place, God speaks to us in the here and now. CONTEXT is essential. McKnight takes great care to explain context for Paul's letter to the believing community in Ephesus, a city that was becoming a cultural cesspool.McKnight argues that women in the church need to be "uncaged" and "allowed to sing" and celebrate their God-given gifts.

#26,681 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The author, Woody Leonhard, has been writing about Windows and Microsoft Office since 1992. He has a very informative style of writing that is easy to follow. He is a straight shooter and will tell you things that Microsoft will not. Because of Woody's experience he will often give you tips that can save you a lot of time and hassle. Generally this Windows 10 All-in-One for Dummies book covers everything from what is Windows 10, how to get and install it, how to use and customize the new features, and many more technical issues. The book is organized into 10 mini-books, each of which has multiple chapters. Here is a summary:1) Windows 10 for newbies, including buying a Windows 10 computer or tablet; Windows 10 for the experienced (what's new); the 6 versions of Windows 10; and how to get and install Windows 10.2) Personalizing Windows: navigating around the desktop (Start menu and more); working with the Notification Center, user accounts, syncing, and privacy issues.3) Working on the desktop: personalizing the Start menu, desktop, and task bar; using multiple desktops; internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome (MS Edge is in Book 5)); Cortana (MS's competitor to Apple's Siri personal assistant); system maintenance.4) Using the built-in universal apps: mail, calendar, contacts, photos, OneNote, maps, music, movies, and TV.5) Connecting with the universal apps: MS Edge (the new internet browser), Skype, Bing, the Windows Store, games, etc.6) Socializing with universal apps: Office for Windows 10, OneDrive, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.7) Controlling your system: settings (including God mode), troubleshooting, libraries, virtual storage, homegroups (networks), and printers.8) Maintaining Windows 10: backup, restore, sync, reset, events, system tools, and virtual machines.9) Securing Windows 10: scams, viruses, malware; Windows built-in security programs and other security software.10) Enhancing Windows 10: using Windows 10 with the iPhone, iPad, Android, Chromecast, Roku, Kindle, etc; Google apps; Outlook, and the best free add-ons.I followed along with the author's instructions on pages 86-87 while doing the online upgrade of a laptop. The author says "Just follow the instructions [on your screen] and Windows 7 or 8.1 will update itself..." He doesn't give step by step instructions here. So what he doesn't say is that when you click on the Windows flag in the lower right corner of the taskbar you have to register and then wait a couple days until Microsoft makes the Windows 10 download available. Then you can do the download and the actual upgrade process. Doing the online upgrade I never saw the "Choose what to keep" screen shown in Table 4-1. And if you want some additional help in the upgrade process, then jump to step 11 on page 90 (which is part of the clean install instructions) which explains Express Settings vs Customized Settings. If you choose the online upgrade, you don't have to worry about choosing the 32-bit or 64-bit option (page 73-74). Microsoft will install the 64-bit version of Windows 10 if you have a 64-bit CPU. For more about that, see the comment that I left. It's a good dummies book and it tries to target both the inexperienced users and the experienced users. The book has a lot of good information about learning and customizing Windows 10. However there were times that I thought the coverage for the more experienced users fell a little short even with 952 pages. For example, Windows 10 now has mandatory updates for drivers. The issue is that some of these updated drivers may cause your hardware to malfunction. Woody does not mention that the only way to opt out of automatic updates for a driver is by downloading a special tool from the MS website. Also, page 8 gives a website for extras and updates to the book, and the website does not exist at the time I wrote this review.

This is the Win 10 edition of Woody Leonhard's Dummy series for the various versions of Windows. If you are not alreadyfamiliar with the later versions of Windows, (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1) this might not be the best version of Win 10 for Dummies for you. There are other versions for first timers. That said Leonhard does his usual good job of breaking Windows into the basic functions and how to weave your way through the various options.and more importantly, where they are hiding. It's clear that he personally has some issues with Microsoft's default configuration and you get a thorough explanation of why. Not a book to read cover to cover but great to run through with the compter in front of you and to keep on the shelf as a first reference.

Good if you know little or nothing about Win 10. Obviously written before the actual release of Win 10 since some of the things in Win 10 were changed or missing.

This is my 6th Woody book. He has guided me through the caves and across the fire pits of Windows from 3.1 to WIN 10. The only version I didn't buy was WIN 8. On his website, he raised enough flags to cause me to stick with WIN 7 until something better came out.Like others who have written reviews over time, Woody's writing style is intelligent and very easy to follow...hard to find that combination. His new book has phrases in the foreword similar to his other books... "You don't need to read cover-to-cover (in this case 950+ pages). Pick a topic you want help with. Later, when you hit a snag, read about it." But, he puts so much stuff in the "Well, I be darned" category on each page, that I just keep reading. The changes from WIN 7 to WIN 10 have been a challenge for me...perhaps because I'm 71 and have spent far too much time trying to figure out where Microsoft moved a feature I had become used to. Woody knows...and tells you how to find it...along with hundreds of tips on supporting software and helpful websites. If Woody and I live long enough, Microsoft will come out with more "upgrades" to Windows. When they come out, Woody will write about, and I buy another Woody book.

Woody Leonhard has done it again! I am so glad he keeps telling us how decipher and use of Microsoft Windows and Office so I don’t feel so dumb. You would think reading a technical book would be boring and dull. One of those read a paragraph and you’ve fallen asleep. Well think again, Woody keeps it interesting, informative and I certainly enjoy his humor. Just when he puts a thought in your head: ‘Well if I do it this way I wonder what would happen’, the next sentence answers what you just thought of. He is an excellent author with more knowledge about Microsoft software then I can ever hope to have. That is why I keep buying his books. You ‘will’ learn starting with the introduction to the table of contents all the way to the index. It is very comprehensive. All of the graphics are helpful too. I use them as a reference showing me I am working in the right area. If it just can’t get through my head I can go to dummies.com for videos, step-by-step examples and articles. The website also has a section on how to shop.I held onto my windows Vista (which I didn’t mind, unlike most) through Windows 7. Then Windows 8 came out and the thought of upgrading to Win 8 was not an option to me, I hung on waiting for something better. With an aging computer and OS I had to take the plunge. I have skipped 2 versions and just knew catching up would be very difficult. Windows 10 –All in one- for Dummies has made that transition easy for me.

I have found this book to be very useful. I has and continues to be an information source for me adapting to Windows 10. I selected this book because I was familiar with Woody Leonhard's Windows 8.1 book. It is not a typical Dummies book, as it is very in depth....a good reference book after the user becomes familiar with Windows 10. I recommend this book!

Yes Please, by Amy Poehler

Review

“Yes Please is a great story…because it is self-damning and hopeful at the same time.” (Los Angeles Times)“Pure charm” (People)“Poehler is very funny, so the jokes are very good…Poehler is very wise, so her advice is on point.” (Slate)“Delightful...Poehler is frank and funny throughout [Yes Please], as is her nature, but her writing unearths a wise narrator who’s seen some of the worst of life and come out the other side unscathed…Can we get more from Amy Poehler? Yes, seriously, please.” (Newsweek)“Demonstrates the skill of this excellent comic actress, a funny woman who roots hilarity in specifics.” (Washington Post)“Required reading for all young women.” (Huffington Post)“[Yes Please] is honest words of wisdom within a joyous story structure.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)“Yes Please veers between reminiscing and philosophizing. Poehler had developed some principles over the years and shares them in usually funny fashion.” (Chicago Sun-Times)“Yes Please isn’t a scan of the comedic brain so much as it is something far better---the full exposure of Poehler’s funny and very magnanimous heart. (Elle)“Yes Please delivers what it should: life lessons and vicarious thrills…the book is largely a portrait of confidence. Reading it, some of it rubs off on us.” (New Yorker)

Fairly average accounts of Amy's life and experiences. She comes off as mean, self-indulgent, and unfunny often and I had to force myself through some parts. I was shocked at how little she revealed and how surface level many of her revelations were. Much of the book is just talking about her celebrity friends strangely enough.

I am completely enjoying this book (2/3 through it)...but feel compelled to write this review as it relates to the Kindle Version only. There are many photos, documents, and other interesting contributions in the book that cannot be seen well (or at all) in the Kindle version. They are all WAY too small to be viewed/read/enjoyed and cannot be enlarged (even if the text IS enlarged). It's really a shame, as these additions seem to add a lot of charm to the content and the nature of the book. I would strongly recommend this book - only in the paper version and NOT the Kindle version. Getting the Kindle version is sort of a rip-off because you miss out on all these great pieces that were intended by the author for the reader to enjoy.

I'm struggling to understand how anyone could like Poehler less after reading this book. I appreciated her honesty in a lot of ways-- Poehler came off as a friend telling me stories and giving me advice, not as a comedian, which was fine by me. Perhaps it's because I didn't go into this book with any real expectations, but I didn't find it even remotely disappointing. I appreciate that Poehler understands that female comedians don't have to be self-deprecating to be funny, as I feel like a large part of the current female comedians have fallen into that pattern.Furthermore, with regards to name dropping and discussions of a privileged lifestyle-- you're reading a celebrity memoir? She's discussing her daily life, and as she's a celebrity, she has celebrity friends and a more affluent way of living. I don't know what you were expecting, frankly. "Please write me stories about your life, but don't tell me about your friends or your lifestyle, just tell me the painful things like your divorce!" That doesn't make any sense.I loved this memoir. It was full of cute anecdotes, and funny little things. I appreciated it, and I appreciate Poehler.

I enjoyed that the audiobook was spoken by Amy herself, it allowed me to hear how she wanted me to read her book.I didn't go into the book with any expectations, but still felt a bit disappointed. There was comedy in there, but not as much as I had liked. Much of the beginning of her story was about her being pregnant, her childbirth, her being a mother: which was not an issue, it was just 3 - 4 chapters in a row that I finally was like "can we change the subject already?"The guest readers were a nice touch, but felt they may have been thrown in there haphazardly: Seth Meyers chapter, to me, didn't need to be there.Organizationally it was a little all over the place. References from pre and post SNL life kept alternating at different times and I was sometimes confused. This isn't a major issue, just something I noticed.I am glad I listened to the book versus read it. I do think it made a difference.

Amy seems kind and hilarious. But, yet, also comes across as domineering and judge-y. Maybe she is just so transparent that we are getting a good dose of who she really is- flaws and all. And, I would never say that’s a bad thing. Like I have found with tons of memoirs lately, this one lacks a certain level of vulnerability which makes me wonder why you’re writing a book about yourself if you’re gonna leave out some of your depths. You can tell she values privacy and boundaries with strangers which is great! But.. again.. then what’s with the memoir?I think she’s great. And this was basically an enjoyable read. Not sure I would recommend this one first off to other people though.

I have been a fan of Amy Poehler for awhile now. I enjoyed her on Saturday Night Live, watching and rewatching Parks and Recreation, and I love anything she does together with Tina Fey. I love to read and she wrote a book, so (bibliophile that I am) I bought a copy.I am generally not a huge fan of autobiographies, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I laughed out loud (obviously, the woman is hilarious), I enjoyed the personal photos she shared and the tales of how she got to be where she is today. She is an inspiring woman and it was interesting to learn more about where she came from and just how very human she is. I also enjoyed the anecdotes about her early days and it was cool to look up her old stuff online (the Upright Citizens Brigade and Andy's Little Sister bits were particularly enjoyable). It's a good read about an interesting woman and I'm happy to have it in my collection. More Amy Poehler? Yes, please!

I really enjoyed reading this book. Amy is inspiring, smart, generous with her support and praise of others, and clearly loves her family. You can tell what an enormous, open heart she has. I particularly appreciated that she was strongly, yet kindly, protective of her marriage and its end- clearly putting her children first instead of going for the disgusting easy-sell tell-all style memoire. As a woman, I see her as a strong role model for how women should treat each other and ourselves. Yet again, Leslie Knope delivers a gem!

Up front, Poehler writes about difficult writing a book is and how much trouble she was having. It shows. Which is a bummer because I'm a huge fan of her work. There doesn't seem to be anything threading each chapter together and the book offers very little insight into creativity or her personal development. So it's not a memoir or an advice book, really. Kind of just reads like a book of journal musings and none of them are particularly interesting.

I could not put this book down! Amy does not disappoint. She has a heart of gold and keeps you laughing and sometimes crying at the same time! I didn't know how much I loved her until I read this book. She's sweet, smart, funny, a women's advocate, a great mom and the list could go on and on! Yes, there is some fowl language, but I still would be proud for my daughter to read this!
